Black bream visit UK shores in late spring through autumn, especially along the South and South‑West coasts and Channel Islands. Look for mixed ground, shallow reefs, kelp beds and rough patches within casting range, plus pier and breakwater edges where tide runs past structure. Clear, settled seas suit them; neap tides with a gentle flood often bring fish tight in, with bites peaking from mid-flood to high water. Use light shore gear and small baits: strips of squid or cuttle, ragworm, prawn, mussel or peeler; fish on a two‑hook paternoster or running ledger with short snoods (12–30 cm) of 10–15 lb fluoro and size 4–1 hooks. Float fishing also scores over reefy ground. Bream respond to scent trails—trickle in chopped prawn/squid/mussel (from a mesh bag on piers or tiny groundbait balls where allowed) and keep baits small and fresh. Expect fast, rattly bites; keep the line tight and don’t strike too early. Daylight is generally better, though dusk can be productive in calm, clear water. Handle carefully—spiny dorsal and strong teeth—and consider returning larger breeders. During the May–June nesting period on certain reefs, avoid anchoring weights over obvious nest areas and fish considerately.

Baits

  • Ragworm 9.2/10
  • Mussel 9/10
  • Peeler Crab 8.2/10
  • Prawn / Shrimp 8/10
  • Soft Plastic (Worm / Isome-style) 6.2/10

Rigs

  • Long & Low 9/10

Clipped-down casting with a long, light snood presents small worm/squid baits naturally at distance—ideal for wary bream on clean to mixed ground in gentle tides.

  • Flowing Trace 8.6/10

A running trace with a 3–5 ft snood lets baits waft in tide over reefs/kelp; very natural presentation when bream graze on shell and worm beds close in.

  • Two-Hook Flapper 8/10

Short droppers fish two small baits to search reefs and rough patches from piers or rocks; good for shoaling bream while keeping gear tidy in moderate tide.

  • Wishbone Rig 7.8/10

Twin hooks close together boost scent and hook-ups from tentative pickers; fishes tight to the seabed with small crab/mussel/prawn baits on clean–mixed ground.

  • Float (Sliding) 7.2/10

Set depth to suspend prawn or strip baits just above kelp/rocks, avoiding snags; deadly in clear, calm water around reefy ground where bream browse midwater.
