A common micro species around UK shores, the black goby favours sheltered ground: harbour walls, rockpools, eelgrass beds and muddy/sandy estuary margins. They sit tight to cover and short patches of clean sand between weed. From the shore, fish light and precise: size 12–8 hooks on short snoods (10–15 cm) with a small paternoster or split-shot rig, dropping baits straight down the wall, into holes in the weed, or along pontoon edges. Tiny baits score—slivers of rag/harbour rag, bits of lug, mussel, prawn or shrimp; LRF anglers do well with small scented worms or isopod-style soft plastics. Expect quick, rattly taps; keep baits just touching bottom and move between pockets until you find them. High water over neap tides and calm conditions help in harbours and creeks, and they’re present in rockpools on bigger tides. Most fish are a few inches long, so scale down tackle and strike gently. Best from late spring through autumn, especially on south and west coasts and in Scottish sea lochs. Handle carefully and release where caught—if lifted from a rockpool, return them to similar cover rather than open sand.
