European eels turn up for shore anglers in tidal rivers, estuaries, harbours and surf beaches with muddy or mixed ground. Warm months and darkness are key: fish the last couple of hours of the flood into slack high, especially when an onshore breeze colours the water. Keep casts short and cover margins, eddies, creek mouths and outfalls. Use a simple running ledger or one‑up paternoster with just enough lead to hold; scent‑rich baits excel—rag or lug, peeler crab, mackerel or herring strip, small squid, or fish‑and‑worm cocktails. Opt for small, strong hooks (size 2 to 1/0; circle patterns help unhooking) and abrasion‑resistant mono; a rotten‑bottom link helps around snags. Expect twisting power close in, so keep rigs tidy and tension steady. Handle with a wet cloth, unhook quickly and release—European eels are critically endangered and UK byelaws require release in most tidal and all inland waters; always check local regulations.

  • Mackerel Strip 8.8/10
  • Lugworm 8.4/10
  • Squid 7.8/10
  • Mussel 7.2/10

Rigs

  • Running Ledger 9.2/10

Classic estuary/harbour eel rig. Minimal resistance so eels move off confidently. Use 2–3ft snood with rag/lug or fish strip; fish after dark over mud/silt. Sensitive bites and fewer tangles than multi-hook rigs.

  • Flowing Trace 8.4/10

Long-snood running rig for wary eels on clean to light-snag ground. Lets bait waft naturally downtide in estuaries or surf gutters at dusk/night. Great with oily fish strip or worm baits.

  • Boom Ledger (Anti-Tangle) 8/10

Anti-tangle boom helps with eel twist and crab attention. Pins bait hard on the deck in tide from piers and river mouths, while keeping presentations tidy for moderate casting range.

  • Float (Sliding) 7.2/10

Ideal along quays, harbour and marina walls. Set stop so bait sits just off the bottom to avoid crabs but stay in the eel zone. Offers little resistance on the take for shy feeders.
