Abundant on rough ground and man-made structure around the UK, rock gobies are ideal LRF targets from the shore. Search intertidal rockpools, the base of harbour walls, pier piles, boulder fields and kelp edges. As the tide floods, they push tight to cover and feed within a metre or two of the bottom. Use ultra-light tackle: 1–6 lb mono/fluoro, tiny hooks (size 12–18) or 1–3 g jigheads, and small baits such as ragworm slivers, isopods/shrimp, mussel, or micro soft plastics/isome. Drop straight down or pitch a metre, keep the bait still or inch it along; lift to set the hook and avoid dragging into snags. Best results come on the flood and around high water, especially in calm conditions; daylight is fine and small harbour lights can help at night. Handle gently and release promptly. Take care not to disturb protected intertidal habitats or overturn boulders, and note the difference from other gobies (e.g., the protected giant goby in parts of the southwest).

Baits

  • Harbour Rag (Maddies) 9.4/10
  • Mussel 8.6/10
  • Limpet 8/10

Rigs

  • Dropshot 9/10

LRF dropshot holds a tiny worm/plastic just off the bottom beside rocks and harbour walls where rock gobies live. Precise depth control and minimal lead reduce snags and register shy bites.

  • Split Shot Rig 8.5/10

Ultra-light line with size 12–8 hook and a couple of split shots; lower tiny rag/mussel/prawn into cracks, kelp and rock pools. Natural sink and slow lift pick off gobies tight to structure with few tangles.

  • Three-Hook Flapper 7.8/10

Scaled-down flapper with short snoods and small hooks fishes multiple tiny baits close-in over rough ground. Static worm/shellfish baits tempt bottom-hugging gobies; keep leads light and casts short.

  • Jighead 7.2/10

Micro jighead (1–3 g) with isome/small soft plastic hopped along gullies and boulders draws aggressive goby hits. Fish almost under the rod tip; use light wire or weed-guard to limit snagging.
