Resident around rough, rocky shores, boulder fields, harbour walls and pier piles, tompot blennies are classic Light Rock Fishing targets. Fish tight to structure under the rod tip, dropping small baits into holes, cracks and kelp gullies; a short trace two-hook paternoster or dropshot with size 8–12 hooks and abrasion-resistant leader works well. Tiny pieces of ragworm, prawn, mussel, limpet, soft crab or slivers of fish, as well as scented worms and micro soft plastics, all take fish—keep baits small and near-static at the entrance to a crevice. Best on the flood into high water when new ground floods, though low-tide rockpools can also produce; settled conditions make presentation easier. They’re sight feeders and most obliging in daylight; expect lots of small fish with the odd larger specimen to 25–30 cm. Handle carefully and release close to where caught as they are strongly site-attached.

Baits

  • Harbour Rag (Maddies) 9.5/10
  • Mussel 8.8/10
  • Limpet 8.3/10
  • Prawn / Shrimp 8/10
  • Soft Plastic (Creature) 7/10

Rigs

  • Dropshot 9.2/10

Vertical next to walls and kelp; keeps lure/bait just off bottom with great feel and low snagging. Fish micro soft plastics or worm slivers on size 10–14 hooks. Ideal for tompots tight to rough ground.

  • Split Shot Rig 8.7/10

Perfect for rockpools and under ledges. A small shot 10–30 cm above the hook lets tiny baits creep naturally with minimal snagging. Great in very shallow boulder ground and tight gullies.

  • Float Paternoster 7.4/10

Suspends tiny baits tight to rocks/piles at a fixed shallow depth, keeping gear above snags. Set 0.5–2 m. Excellent around harbour walls and breakwaters when there’s a little surge.
