Spring vs neap tides. Spring tides have a larger difference between high and low water, so more water moves on each tide — usually stronger flow that stirs up food and gets fish feeding. Neap tides have a smaller range and generally gentler movement. The range here is compared with what is normal for this stretch of coast, and the cycle swings between springs and neaps roughly every week, following the moon.

Ferry Point is the south-western tip of Hayling Island, at the entrance to Langstone Harbour beside the Hayling ferry landing and Ferry Boat Inn. It is a compact but tide-sensitive estuary-mouth mark, capable of producing good sport when bait, tide and conditions line up.

The mark is reached from the Ferry Road/Ferry Boat Inn end of Hayling Island, with fishing generally taken from the shingle foreshore and harbour-side edge rather than from ferry infrastructure. It is often referred to as Ferry Point, Hayling Island; do not confuse it with similarly named ferry landings elsewhere in Hampshire.

Ferry Point offers a useful mix of harbour and open-water species, with the exact catch changing markedly through the year and with water clarity.

A standard beach/estuary approach works well, but tackle must be matched to the strength of the tide rather than used on autopilot.

Water movement is the defining feature of Ferry Point. The harbour entrance can run hard, while low water exposes extensive shallow ground and can leave some areas unfishable.

This is not a forgiving mark in poor weather or on a strong tide: the channel, soft margins and nearby ferry operation all deserve proper respect. Keep well away from the ferry landing, ramp and route, and never cast where a line could impede navigation.

The Ferry Boat Inn and Hayling ferry landing are close by, but anglers should not assume that customer facilities, parking or toilets are available for unrestricted angling use. Hayling Island has further shops and services, though these are not immediately beside the point.

Ferry Point is generally more productive when approached as a mobile, tide-led session rather than an all-day static beach cast. Arrive early enough to assess the shore, the usable casting water and any access notices before committing to a spot.

Fishing is not known to be universally prohibited at Ferry Point, but access and fishing conditions can be constrained by harbour operations, land management and conservation designations. Langstone Harbour is a sensitive designated site, so anglers should fish considerately and check current official notices before travelling.
