Royal Victoria Country Park

Royal Victoria Country Park fronts the western shore of Southampton Water at Netley, offering sheltered estuary fishing rather than open-coast surfcasting. It is principally a light-to-medium tackle venue, worthwhile for species that feed over the mud, sand and shingle margins on a flooding tide.

The fishing ground is the tidal shoreline below and alongside the country park, with views across Southampton Water towards the Hamble and the eastern side of the estuary. It is an easy mark to reach on foot from the park, but the most productive-looking water may be a walk from the main visitor areas.

Expect a typical Southampton Water mixed-estuary catch, with the exact result heavily influenced by season, salinity and water clarity. The venue is better approached as a patient bait-fishing mark than a place for guaranteed large fish.

Simple, well-presented bait rigs are generally more effective here than very heavy beach gear. Match the tackle to the sheltered water, but allow enough grip and abrasion resistance for tidal flow, stones and occasional snaggy ground.

The mark usually fishes best when there is enough depth for fish to move close over the foreshore, particularly from the latter part of the flood through high water and into the early ebb. At low water, large areas can become very shallow or expose soft mud, limiting both casting positions and fishable water.

This is a busy public park and estuary frontage, so considerate fishing and careful assessment of the ground are essential. The hard paths and waterfront areas can provide relatively straightforward access, but the tidal foreshore itself is uneven, soft in places and not suitable for everyone.

Royal Victoria Country Park has the advantages of a managed visitor destination, so parking and daytime visitor facilities are normally far better than at an isolated shore mark. Treat all facilities as park amenities rather than angling facilities, and check current opening arrangements before travelling.

Travel light enough to move if the chosen stretch is crowded, and spend time looking at the water before committing to a peg. Southampton Water can be coloured after rain and busy with boat traffic, so fishing the right stage of tide and keeping tackle presentation tidy matters more than extreme casting range.

Do not assume that every part of the park frontage, beach, structure or adjacent private shoreline is open to angling.
