Premium Feature

Newnham-on-Severn is a high-potential but tide-critical River Severn estuary mark. It fishes best when you work with the flow rather than against it: clearer neaps for mullet and micro-species, and small-to-mid springs for bass, flounder and eels along channel edges, gutter mouths and eddies. The main decision is timing — avoid bore surges and the fastest water, and concentrate effort around easing stages of tide.

Unlock the full Newnham-on-Severn trip plan for:

  • Know when Newnham is worth fishing — and when the tide is against you.
  • Pick neaps for mullet and small-to-mid springs for bass and flounder.
  • Target the ferry/slip area, channel edges and close-in muddy gutters with purpose.
  • Avoid wasting time in the full Severn push — fish the easing water.
  • Use the right species plan for bass, flounder, eels, mullet and smelt.

A powerful tidal estuary mark on the River Severn beside Newnham-on-Severn, fished from firm ground along the village riverbank and near the old ferry/slip. Expect extreme currents, fast-flooding tides, and soft mud—plan around the tide tables and the Severn Bore. Best results come on neap tides for sight-fishing mullet in clearer water, and on small-to-mid springs for bass and flounder along channel edges and eddies.

Scenery & Comfort 7/10
Safety 3/10
Accessibility 5/10

Flounder 8/10
Tip: Muddy banks and gutter mouths; lug or rag tipped with fish on strong grip leads. Fish last 2 hrs of flood and first of ebb when flow eases. Best autumn–spring; many bites close in.
European Eel 7/10
Tip: Warm evenings on flooding tide into first of ebb. Ledger worm, fish strip or offal close to margins and eddies; summer–early autumn. Handle carefully and release.
Bass 6/10
Tip: Peeler crab, rag or fish baits into current seams/eddies; lures in calmer spells. Best 2 hrs around HW on neaps, summer–autumn. Avoid bore surges.
Mullet (Thin-lipped) 6/10
Tip: Summer on clearer neaps. Small spinners tipped with Isome/worm, worked along surface slicks, creek mouths and eddies on the flood/early ebb. Stealthy approach.
Common Goby 5/10
Tip: Micro baits (worm slivers) on size 18–20 hooks right on the edge of the mud at slack water. Best on neaps when clarity improves.
Sand Goby 5/10
Tip: Muddy margins; size 16–20 hooks with tiny worm/shrimp. Fish slack windows around HW/LW with micro-ledger or small float tight to the edge.
European Smelt 4/10
Tip: Late winter–early spring on neaps after dusk. Tiny fish strips or size 10–12 Sabikis worked midwater along channel margins during the slower tide.
Mullet (Thick-lipped) 4/10
Tip: Occasional in warmer months on neaps; bread flake under a float or small spinners. Target quiet eddies/outflows on the flood; light lines, stealth.
Sea Trout 3/10
Tip: Dusk into dark as tide eases; small spoons/spinners in eddies and crease lines. Spring–summer. Check local bylaws/permissions for migratory fish.
