6.5 · Beach · West Sussex
Worthing Beach is a broad shingle shore backed by a promenade, with numerous timber groynes and easy access from seafront parking and town amenities. It is a flexible South Coast mark: fish close-in gutters and groyne ends for flatfish, bass and whiting, while summer brings mackerel, garfish and bream within casting range; evening and flooding tides are often most productive.

Where the data comes from. Weather and sea-state readings come from the Met Office and Open-Meteo forecast models, refreshed several times a day. High and low water are taken from tide-station predictions for this stretch of coast.
How the score works. Each window is scored 0–100 from the signals that most reliably move fish inshore: tide movement (a running tide carries food, so the last of the flood and first of the ebb are usually the prime spells), wind speed and direction (onshore wind stirs food into the surf — up to the point it makes fishing hard), sea state (a little wave and swell movement helps, heavy swell hurts), and weather — rain, temperature and light. Behind the headline number we score bite opportunity and comfort separately, and run a separate safety check on wind and swell. The size of the tide counts too: spring tides move more water than neaps, so the tidal range for this stretch of coast is weighed alongside the tide's direction, your target species and this mark — and unusually big springs strengthen the safety check, because the water rises faster and covers more ground.
Your target species counts. Pick a species below and the score also weights what we know about it — its season, preferred sea temperature, tide stage and sea state, and whether it feeds by day or night.
The rating is guidance, not a guarantee — conditions change fast on the coast, so always judge the sea in front of you before you fish.

Strong spring tides — the sea rises faster and reaches further up the shore than usual, so allow extra margin on access routes and cut-off points.
The fishing rating combines opportunity and comfort. Always check local sea conditions; the safety check is guidance, not a guarantee.
Spring vs neap tides. Spring tides have a larger difference between high and low water, so more water moves on each tide — usually stronger flow that stirs up food and gets fish feeding. Neap tides have a smaller range and generally gentler movement. The range here is compared with what is normal for this stretch of coast, and the cycle swings between springs and neaps roughly every week, following the moon.
Big spring tides: the water rises faster and covers more ground than usual — double-check access routes and cut-off points before you fish.

Worthing Beach is a long, urban shingle-and-sand frontage on the West Sussex coast, offering straightforward access to a varied but generally subtle South Coast fishery. It is best approached as a mobile beach mark: conditions, water clarity and the chosen gap between groynes can matter more than casting extreme distance.
The mark covers Worthing’s main seafront rather than one tiny hotspot, with a broad promenade behind a succession of shingle beaches, timber groynes and occasional sandy patches. Anglers can choose quieter stretches away from the busiest central bathing areas, while still retaining easy access to the town’s services.
Worthing’s open beach is capable of producing a genuinely mixed bag, particularly from late spring into autumn, but it can be quiet when the water is very clear and calm. Smaller fish are common, yet a well-timed evening tide can bring better bass, rays, hounds and sole within casting range.
A simple beach ledgering approach covers most of the fishing at Worthing, but match the rig and bait to the target rather than relying on one large, static setup. Moderate casting is often enough if fish are feeding in the nearshore trough, while a second rod can be used to search farther water when conditions allow.
Worthing can fish on a range of tides, but a building flood and the first part of the ebb are often productive because they bring fish close over the shallow beach. Evening, darkness and a little colour in the water are frequently more important than chasing an extreme tide.
The promenade makes Worthing one of the easier Sussex sea-fishing locations to reach, but the shingle itself is uneven and can be tiring or awkward underfoot. The main hazards are changing sea conditions, busy public space and fishing close to groynes after dark.
Worthing is a fully serviced town-front mark, which is a major advantage for a long session or for anglers travelling without a great deal of equipment. Facilities are concentrated around the central seafront and town centre, although their opening hours should not be assumed at night.
Worthing rewards observation more than brute-force casting. A short recce at low water or in daylight can reveal the cleaner channels and subtle depressions that are much harder to identify once the sea covers them.
Fishing is not known to be universally prohibited along Worthing Beach, but this is a busy resort frontage where local controls, temporary notices and activity-specific exclusions may apply. Treat signs on the day as definitive, particularly around bathing areas, events, the pier, launching sites and managed seafront spaces.
