Herring

Herring show inshore around the UK mainly in colder months, with consistent winter runs on deep North Sea and Scottish east coast piers, plus occasional appearances on the south and west coasts. Target them from deep-water piers, harbour walls and breakwaters with decent tide run and depth. Best sessions are on the flood building to high water, especially at dusk and into the night—pier lights can pull shoals tight to structure. Use small sabikis or shrimp rigs (size 8–12) on light tackle, a 1–2 oz lead to keep things in the zone, and work them mid-water with a slow sink-and-draw. If fish are shy, bait the lower two hooks with tiny slivers of mackerel, squid or prawn, or fish a single small hook under a slim float. Micro metals and spoons (5–15 g) also take fish when worked through the water column. Herring like clear, calm conditions; watch for bird activity and shoals of sprats. Handle gently—they’re soft-scaled—and ice your catch quickly. Check local pier rules (multi-hook limits, seasonal closures) and any regional size/bag restrictions before you fish.
