Rockling

Rockling (three- and five-bearded) are common winter-to-early-spring targets around UK rough ground. Look for boulders, kelp beds, broken ground, pier piles and harbour walls, plus estuary mouths with mixed rock and sand. They root about tight to structure, so long casts aren’t needed: drop down the wall, into rock gullies and holes, or just beyond the first rough patch. The first couple of hours of the flood, especially into darkness, are prime. Colour in the water from onshore winds often helps. Bait small and smelly: ragworm or lugworm sections, mussel, cockle, razorfish, small peeler or shore crab, mackerel or squid slivers. A simple 1–2 hook flapper/paternoster with short snoods and abrasion-resistant mono works well; size 2–1/0 strong but fine-wire hooks suit their small mouths. Use a rotten-bottom link over heavy rough ground. Bites are typically fast rattles; don’t wait too long or they’ll bury into weed and crevices. Most fish are small and best returned quickly; handle with wet hands and unhook gently. Night sessions on piers and rock ledges produce consistent sport through the colder months, with the odd better three-bearded showing from deeper marks.
