Chapel Six Marshes

Chapel Six Marsh is a remote, tidal Lincolnshire coast mark where the draw is less about a comfortable beach session and more about fishing moving water, channels and the seaward edge of the saltmarsh. It can produce pleasant mixed fishing in the right conditions, but it is a venue for well-prepared anglers who understand soft ground and fast-rising tides.

• Expect an exposed, natural marsh-and-foreshore environment rather than a promenade, harbour wall or purpose-built fishing platform.
• The mark is generally most appealing to anglers prepared to walk, travel light and fish a planned tide.
• Conditions can alter the fishable ground considerably; a productive gutter or creek mouth may be filled, shifted or inaccessible after weather and tidal changes.
• It is not an ideal first venue for inexperienced sea anglers, lone anglers unfamiliar with saltmarsh terrain, or anyone needing step-free access.

The mark lies on the Lincolnshire coast in the Chapel St Leonards/Chapel area, associated with the coastal marshes rather than the resort beachfront itself. Access is commonly by local public routes and coastal paths, but the final approach and the exact fishable edge can depend on gates, sea-defence works, land management and the state of the marsh.

• Treat the name as a broad coastal area rather than assuming there is one fixed, signed peg.
• Use only clearly public access routes, designated paths and any permitted parking; do not drive onto tracks, verges, flood banks or marsh ground unless expressly allowed.
• Be prepared for a walk over uneven grass, shingle, mud or sand, and keep tackle compact enough to carry safely.
• Do not climb locked gates, cross private fields or interfere with livestock, drainage structures, flood-defence assets or habitat-management works.
• Before travelling, check current local access information, coastal-path notices and any temporary closures caused by maintenance, weather or flood risk.

Fishing is typically for Lincolnshire’s mixed North Sea shore species, with the strongest prospects changing sharply with season, sea state and the availability of a fishable channel. Flats and creek mouths can be especially worthwhile for species that feed over mud and sand on the flood.

• Flounder are a realistic target over muddy, sandy and mixed estuarine-type ground, particularly where a channel gives access to clean moving water.
• Dabs, small plaice and other flatfish may show where the seaward ground is sufficiently sandy and the water has settled.
• Whiting can provide the main winter sport, with codling possible in the colder months when there is coloured water and a suitable onshore sea.
• Bass may appear during warmer months around channels, creek mouths and floodwater, although catches are variable and should never be assumed.
• Eel, small rays, dogfish and miscellaneous species are possible in favourable conditions, but availability is highly local and seasonal.
• Crab can be a serious bait thief in warmer water, so carry spare bait and use secure presentations.

A simple beach-caster or bass-style setup is normally more useful than elaborate gear, provided it is matched to the actual ground and tide. The key is to present bait in a channel, gutter or along a feeding edge without putting yourself onto dangerous mud to gain a few extra metres.

• Fish the flooding tide where possible, concentrating on the first water covering productive channels and the final part of the flood when fish may move close.
• A two-hook flapper, clipped-down pennel or pulley-style rig can cover most bait fishing, with the choice guided by snags, tidal pull and target species.
• Use enough lead to hold safely without overloading a light rod; grip leads are often useful where tidal flow is strong.
• Lugworm, ragworm, peeler crab, squid, mackerel strip and cocktail baits are sensible options, with worm and crab especially useful for flatfish and bass prospects.
• Keep casts purposeful rather than simply casting as far as possible: the nearest defined channel, drain or change in substrate can outfish featureless distance.
• A headtorch, bait elastic, spare traces and a landing net or drop net are useful only where the terrain permits their safe use; never descend unstable banks to land a fish.

Tide timing is central at Chapel Six Marsh because the marsh, creeks and foreshore can flood rapidly and cut off the route behind an angler. A moderate onshore breeze that colours the water can improve winter bait fishing, while calmer settled conditions often favour flatfish and lighter mixed fishing.

• Arrive early enough to inspect the route, identify an escape line and be back off the low ground well before the tide removes it.
• Fish around the flood and high water only from ground that remains safe for the entire session; do not rely on being able to outrun incoming water across soft mud.
• Larger tides can create more flow and bring fish closer, but they also increase the hazard, shorten available fishing time and make channels difficult to cross.
• Avoid strong easterly or north-easterly weather, storm surge warnings, fog, electrical storms and any sea condition that places waves or spray against the sea defences.
• Coloured water after an onshore blow can be valuable for whiting and codling, but only if travel and the fishing position remain safe.
• Check a reliable local tide table and weather forecast immediately before departure; do not use generic tide times without allowing for the precise coastal area and your access route.

The major risks here are tidal isolation, deep soft mud, concealed creeks and exposure to wind and weather. This is not a reliably accessible mark, and the safest decision on some tides or days is not to fish it.

• Never walk onto saltmarsh mud or attempt to cross a creek unless you know the ground and have confirmed it is safe; mud can trap boots and channels can deepen unexpectedly.
• Fish with a companion whenever possible, tell someone your exact plan, and carry a fully charged phone in a waterproof case.
• Keep a continuous eye on the sea and your return route; incoming water can surround low areas far faster than expected.
• Wear suitable waterproof footwear with ankle support, warm layers and high-visibility outer clothing; consider a buoyancy aid where there is a realistic risk of entering deep tidal water.
• Do not take children, dogs or mobility-limited visitors onto exposed marsh ground without a conservative, pre-checked plan and immediate access to firm ground.
• There are unlikely to be level pegs, railings, lighting, close vehicle access or dependable emergency shelter at the fishing edge.

Chapel Six Marsh should be approached as a natural fishing location with little or no on-mark provision. Obtain bait, food, drinking water, fuel and any tackle items before leaving the nearby settled areas.

• Do not assume that toilets, bins, lighting, benches, tackle shops or refreshments will be available at the access point.
• Park only where it is lawful, safe and does not obstruct farm access, residents, emergency vehicles, gates or flood-defence operations.
• Take all litter home, including discarded line, bait packets, broken tackle and cigarette ends.
• Bring a rubbish bag and remove any line or hooks found around your immediate fishing position where it is safe to do so.
• Mobile signal may be inconsistent in exposed coastal areas, so download essential tide, weather and route information beforehand.

Success at this sort of marsh mark comes from observation: visit in daylight, watch where water drains and returns, and learn which firm banks remain usable through a tide. A short, safe session on a moderate tide is more valuable than forcing a long session on a big tide with an uncertain exit.

• Walk the accessible path at low water only if conditions are safe, noting firm ground, creek mouths, drainage cuts and a clear route back.
• Set up well back from the waterline rather than chasing every yard of retreating tide.
• Start with fresh worm or crab-based bait for flatfish and bass chances; add squid or fish strip when whiting, dogfish or winter species are the aim.
• Use plain, robust rigs and carry spares, as shell, debris and rough creek edges can cost tackle.
• Keep noise and lights to a minimum around wildlife, and avoid trampling vegetation or disturbing roosting birds.
• If the ground, weather or access feels wrong on arrival, use a recognised local beach or leave the session for another day.

There is no basis to state that angling is universally prohibited throughout the area, so this mark should not be treated as banned. However, saltmarsh, sea-defence and coastal land can include private property, conservation designations and temporary work zones, and access rights do not automatically create a right to fish everywhere.

• Check all signs at the actual approach and obey landowner, local-authority, Environment Agency and coastal-management restrictions.
• Do not fish from, climb on or damage flood-defence structures where signage or local rules prohibit it.
• Respect any seasonal wildlife protection measures, nesting-bird zones, fenced habitat areas and requests to keep to paths.
• Confirm local rules on parking, night access, dogs and any bait collection before visiting.
• Follow current national and local rules for minimum sizes, catch limits, protected species and bass measures; these can change, so check official sources rather than relying on old reports.
• Return undersized, protected or unwanted fish carefully, and do not remove shellfish, birds’ eggs, plants or other wildlife from the marsh.
