Trusthorpe Beach

Trusthorpe Beach is a long, open Lincolnshire sand beach between Mablethorpe and Sutton-on-Sea, best approached as a mobile surf-fishing venue rather than a fixed-feature mark. Its shallow, shifting ground can fish very well when a tide creates defined gutters, channels and coloured water, but it can also be quiet when the sea is flat and clear.

The beach lies on the Lincolnshire east coast, with access generally available from the Trusthorpe/Sutton-on-Sea side and along the public seafront. Conditions and the position of the fish vary greatly along the frontage, so it is worth walking the beach at low water before choosing a pitch.

• Look for darker water, runnels, low-water gullies and the ends of groynes or defence structures rather than casting blindly from the first convenient access point.
• The beach is predominantly sand, although patches of firmer mixed ground, groynes and sea-defence material can alter both casting and landing conditions.
• Parking and access arrangements can change with seasonal seafront restrictions, so use signed public parking and avoid blocking residential roads, ramps or emergency access.
• A barrow is useful on the wider sands, but soft sand can make heavy loads hard work; travel light if walking any distance from the promenade.
• The exact waterline can be a substantial walk from the sea wall around low tide, while high water can leave little dry beach in places.

Trusthorpe is principally a mixed, sandy-beach fishery. Expect the better species to be seasonal and tide-dependent rather than guaranteed on every visit.

• Bass are a realistic summer and early-autumn target, particularly in coloured water, over a flooding tide, around surf and where a gutter runs close in.
• Flounder, dab and occasional plaice are the principal flatfish prospects; flounder are often especially worth targeting in the cooler months and around channels.
• Whiting commonly provide the autumn and winter sport, with codling possible when there is a proper North Sea movement of fish and some sea on.
• Dogfish and small rays can show in the warmer part of the year, though their presence is variable and should not be treated as a certainty.
• Small coalfish, pouting and other mixed North Sea species may appear, particularly when fishing after dark or in more coloured water.
• Eels and other non-target fish are possible in summer; handle all fish carefully and return unwanted catches promptly.

A standard beach-casting outfit is suitable, but distance alone is not the answer here: fish the nearest productive gutter before committing to a long cast. Two rods can be useful where permitted and safely managed, with one bait placed close and another searching farther water.

• A 12- to 15-foot beachcaster, fixed-spool or multiplier reel, shock leader and an appropriate grip lead cover most situations; use enough lead to hold in the tide without creating a hazard to others.
• For bass, try a clipped pulley, pennel or simple flowing rig carrying ragworm, lugworm, peeler crab, crab-based cocktails or a small fish bait. Present baits in surfy, coloured water rather than seeking extreme range.
• For flatties, use a light two-hook flapper or flowing trace with smaller hooks, beads only where desired, and worm, mussel, harbour rag, lug or tipped strips of squid.
• For whiting and codling, clipped rigs, pulley rigs and pennel traces loaded with fresh lugworm, crab, squid, mackerel or worm-and-squid cocktails are dependable starting points.
• For rays and dogfish, a robust flowing rig or pulley rig with squid, sandeel, mackerel strip or a squid-and-fish cocktail is practical; use a single suitably strong hook and avoid leaving fish unattended in the surf.
• Fresh local worm bait is often more productive than old frozen bait. Keep baits cool, carry spare rigs, and expect occasional abrasion or tackle loss near structures.

The mark is strongly shaped by tide, wind direction and recent sea state. A little colour and movement often improve the fishing, whereas prolonged settled, clear conditions can make daytime catches difficult.

• Fish the flood and the first part of the ebb as a general starting point, especially when channels and gutters begin to fill; the best window can be very local.
• Bigger tides can expose useful low-water features but also produce faster currents, longer walks and a quicker loss of safe ground. Arrive early enough to assess your exit route.
• A moderate onshore or north-easterly sea can stir food and colour the water, helping bass, whiting and possible codling, but heavy surf can make fishing unsafe or impractical.
• Calmer summer evenings and dawn sessions can suit bass, flatfish, dogfish and rays. Night fishing is often more productive for whiting and other feeding fish.
• Visit at low water in daylight, if possible, to identify gullies and the safest line back to the promenade; these features can move after storms.

This is an exposed North Sea beach where the tide, surf and weather deserve more attention than the fishing tackle. It has relatively straightforward seafront access in places, but uneven sand, groynes and changing tidal ground limit full accessibility.

• Check tide times, weather and sea-state forecasts before setting out, and leave the beach well before the rising tide removes your route back.
• Do not fish on or immediately beside slippery groynes, rock armour or sea-defence blocks in rough conditions; waves can sweep across structures unexpectedly.
• Wear footwear with grip, warm waterproof layers and a headtorch after dark. Tell someone where you are going, particularly for solo night sessions.
• Keep rods, lines and casting areas clear of walkers, dogs and other beach users. Never cast if anybody is within the casting arc or likely to walk into it.
• The promenade and nearby access points may assist anglers with limited mobility, but getting to the water can involve soft sand and variable gradients. Inspect the chosen access in person rather than relying on a general description.
• In an emergency call 999 and ask for the Coastguard; do not enter the water to recover tackle or assist beyond your competence.

Trusthorpe benefits from being close to established seaside settlements, so food, shops and public conveniences are generally easier to find than at a remote Lincolnshire beach. Availability, opening times and seasonal provision should nevertheless be checked locally.

• Sutton-on-Sea and Mablethorpe provide nearby options for bait, tackle, food, fuel and other supplies, though specialist sea bait is best obtained before late-evening sessions.
• Public toilets, cafés and seafront amenities may be available around the resort frontage, but do not assume they will be open overnight or outside the main season.
• Use bins where provided and take home discarded line, bait packaging, hook packets and all other litter.
• Bring drinking water, a basic first-aid kit, a landing tool for larger fish, a measure and a camera or phone for recording catches.

The most consistent approach is to treat Trusthorpe as a feature-finding beach and adjust position with the tide. A short move to a better gutter can matter more than changing to a more elaborate rig.

• Walk the sand at low tide and note where channels angle along the beach, where water remains at low water and where wave lines break unevenly; these are useful starting clues on the next flood.
• Start one bait in the nearest depression or edge of a runnel. Many fish, particularly bass and flatties, feed surprisingly close to the shore.
• Avoid crowding groynes or casting across other anglers' lines. On a popular evening, cooperative spacing catches more fish than fighting for one obvious feature.
• Match bait to the target and season: worm and crab are excellent all-round options, while larger fish or squid cocktails are better reserved for larger, more predatory targets.
• Keep only fish that are safely within current legal limits and that you genuinely intend to use. Returning undersized, unwanted and breeding fish in good condition protects the venue.
• Local tackle shops and Lincolnshire sea-angling reports can provide the most useful up-to-date intelligence on bait availability, recent catches, storm damage and any access changes.

There is no general rod-licence requirement for ordinary sea fishing in England, but national fisheries rules and local controls still apply. There is no confirmed blanket prohibition on angling at Trusthorpe Beach, although temporary restrictions, safety works and locally signed exclusions must always be observed.

• Check all signs at the access point for beach-management works, restricted areas, seasonal arrangements, designated bathing areas or directions from council staff.
• Minimum landing sizes, catch limits, closed seasons and protected-species rules can apply to sea fish and shellfish; consult current official UK fisheries guidance before retaining any catch.
• Do not assume that rules for recreational sea angling, commercial gathering and bait collection are the same. Check current local authority, landowner and fisheries rules before digging bait or collecting shellfish.
• Respect any conservation designations, nesting areas and wildlife notices on the wider coast, and avoid disturbing birds, seals or dune habitat.
• If fishing close to a harbour, outfall, defence work or organised event, verify whether a local exclusion distance or temporary byelaw applies before setting up.
