Coalhouse Fort

Coalhouse Fort is a Thames Estuary shore mark at East Tilbury, where anglers fish the tidal river beside the historic fort and its surrounding seawall. It is primarily a mixed-estuary venue rather than a classic open-coast beach, with the prospect of fish improving when there is colour and movement in the water.

• The mark can produce useful sport through much of the year, but catches are often tide-, weather- and bait-dependent.
• It is best approached as a mobile, opportunistic estuary session: conditions can change quickly with shipping wash, wind and tidal flow.
• Fishing access around the fort and foreshore should not be assumed to be unrestricted; check the current notices on arrival.

The fort stands on the north bank of the Thames at East Tilbury, with fishing generally associated with the riverside seawall and foreshore rather than the fort building itself. Access is usually from the Coalhouse Fort visitor area and public riverside paths, but operating arrangements, gates and parking can change.

• Use only clearly open public paths, designated visitor areas and established fishing positions; do not climb fences, enter closed sections or cross private land.
• The seawall gives a raised casting position in places, although ground conditions and available room vary considerably along it.
• Parking, gate opening times and any charges should be checked through the current site operator or local authority information before travelling.
• The walk from parking to a suitable spot may involve uneven paths and grass, so a trolley is useful but not always easy to use after rain.

Coalhouse Fort has the mixed fish population expected of a brackish lower-Thames mark, with seasonal visitors joining resident estuary species. Results vary greatly with salinity, freshwater flow, water temperature and the amount of colour in the river.

• Flounder are a traditional target in the cooler months and can also show outside the peak winter period.
• Whiting, dab and occasional codling may be possible in autumn and winter when conditions are favourable, although none should be regarded as guaranteed.
• Bass can appear in the warmer part of the year, especially around moving water and baitfish activity.
• Eels, school bass, small rays and smooth-hound-type catches are possible at times, while mullet may be seen in suitable summer conditions.
• Small pout, gobies and other estuary mini-species can provide bites when larger fish are scarce.

Simple, robust estuary tackle is the sensible starting point, with enough lead to hold safely in a strong tidal pull. A two-rod approach can work well: one baited for a larger fish and another carrying a smaller, more selective rig.

• Use a beachcaster or similar shore rod, a reliable fixed-spool or multiplier reel, and tackle strong enough for abrasion, tide and occasional snagging.
• A clipped one- or two-hook flapper, pulley-style rig or flowing rig covers most bait fishing situations; keep hook sizes and trace strength matched to the intended species.
• Begin with enough grip lead to hold bottom without repeatedly dragging, then adjust for the actual flow rather than relying on a fixed weight.
• Ragworm, lugworm, squid, mackerel strip and peeler or soft crab are worthwhile baits; worm-and-squid or crab baits are useful for a mixed chance.
• For flounder, present worm or small crab baits neatly on a lighter flowing trace where the tide allows. For whiting and codling, use larger worm, squid or cocktail baits after dark.
• Keep casts controlled and avoid casting into the navigation channel or across other users of the seawall.

Tidal state matters more here than sheer casting distance. The Thames can run hard, and the most comfortable fishing is often around the slower stages of the tide, though feeding windows may occur well into the flow.

• Fish a rising tide into high water where access and local conditions permit; the first part of the ebb can also be productive but may become difficult as flow increases.
• Water carrying a little colour after wind or freshwater influence can favour bait fishing, while very clear, quiet conditions can be slower.
• Autumn and winter evenings are the traditional time to try for whiting, dab, flounder and the chance of a better fish.
• Spring and summer offer the best prospect of bass, eels, mullet activity and mixed daytime sport.
• Check tide predictions, wind direction and weather before setting out, and do not remain below the seawall where a rising tide can cut off a route back.

This is a major tidal river, not a sheltered commercial fishing platform. Deep mud, sharp tidal edges, strong currents and the wash from large vessels demand care at all times.

• Never attempt to wade the foreshore: Thames mud can be deep and unstable, channels can be concealed, and the tide rises rapidly.
• Keep well back from the edge, particularly in darkness, rain, frost or when concentrating on a bite.
• Large ships can create substantial wash; secure gear, watch the river and move back if water is pushing up the bank.
• Wear suitable footwear, carry a headtorch for evening sessions and take warm, waterproof layers in colder months.
• The raised path may be manageable for some anglers with limited mobility, but uneven surfaces, grass, slopes and the lack of a purpose-built fishing platform can make access challenging.
• Do not fish alone in poor weather if possible, and ensure someone knows where you are and when you expect to leave.

Coalhouse Fort is a historic visitor site, so facilities may be available near the visitor and parking area when the site is open, rather than at the fishing position itself. Anglers should be self-sufficient once on the riverside.

• Toilets, refreshments, parking and fort access are subject to opening arrangements and should not be relied on outside advertised hours.
• There are no guaranteed tackle, bait, lighting or freshwater facilities on the seawall.
• Bring drinking water, a bin bag, a first-aid kit and all bait, tackle and spare terminal gear required for the session.
• Take all litter, discarded line and bait packaging home; this is especially important on a public heritage and riverside site.

The most successful approach at Coalhouse is usually to fish the conditions rather than wait for a mythical permanent hotspot. Arrive early enough to watch the tide, identify a safe casting gap and speak politely with any regular anglers already present.

• A modest cast can be enough in an estuary; first concentrate on secure presentation and keeping clear of the strongest flow.
• Bring a range of lead weights, spare rigs and abrasion-resistant traces, as snags, debris and tide can quickly cost terminal tackle.
• After dark, keep lights discreet and avoid blocking the path with rods, tripods or tackle boxes.
• If bites are slow, vary bait size, trace length and casting range before moving; fish can feed close under the seawall.
• Be considerate of walkers, cyclists, dog owners, fort visitors and other anglers, especially at busy weekend periods.

There is no clear basis to state that sea fishing at Coalhouse Fort is universally banned, but access and fishing permissions can be restricted by current site rules, closures, signage, conservation measures or safety work. Treat signs and instructions from the land manager, harbour or enforcement officers as decisive.

• Check current Coalhouse Fort and Thurrock Council information for visitor access, parking, gate times, events and any rules affecting fishing from the grounds or seawall.
• Do not fish inside the fort, from structures, or from any area marked closed, private, unsafe or no-fishing.

• Recreational sea angling does not normally require a rod licence in England, but freshwater, migratory and local byelaw situations can differ; check the official position if your fishing could involve non-tidal water or protected species.
• Return undersized, protected or unwanted fish promptly and carefully, and avoid taking more fish than you can use.
