Martello Bay is a broad, open sandy beach on the Clacton/Jaywick frontage, with groynes and a shallow, tide-dependent inshore gutter. It is a practical Essex venue for relaxed beach fishing, but it generally fishes better when there is moving water and a little colour in the sea rather than in flat, crystal-clear conditions.

Martello Bay lies on the developed Essex coast around the Clacton-on-Sea and Jaywick area, backed by a seafront promenade and residential streets. Access is normally straightforward on foot from the promenade, although the exact usable beach and available parking can vary with the season, sea defences and local works.

• Look for the gaps between groynes, visible gullies and slightly darker water rather than simply casting straight out from the highest part of the beach.
• Promenade access makes it easier to transport a light beach setup, trolley or short rod holdall than at many more remote Essex marks.

• Flounder are a realistic cold-water and spring target over the sand, especially where there are shallow channels and worm-rich ground.

A simple two-rod beach approach is effective at Martello Bay: one bait close to the first gutter and another cast farther toward any deeper-looking water. The beach is usually more about finding fishable water and presenting bait naturally than achieving extreme distance.

• Use a light to medium beachcaster or continental-style rod with a fixed-spool reel for most bait fishing.
• A two-hook clipped rig, flapper or short paternoster with small hooks is useful for whiting, dabs, flounder and general mixed fishing.
• For bass, try a single-hook pulley or running ledger with a larger bait, keeping the presentation close to the edge of a gutter or alongside a groyne line.
• Lugworm, ragworm, squid, mackerel strip and peeler crab in season are sensible all-round bait choices; match the bait size to the species and conditions.
• A short cast can be enough at high water, while at lower stages it may pay to reach the outer edge of a channel—provided it can be done safely and without overcasting into people.

• Lure fishing for bass is most realistic in warm, slightly coloured water with a bit of surf, but only where swimmers and other beach users are well clear.

The bay is shallow, so tide height and water movement strongly influence its fishing. The most productive windows are often around the flood and high water, when fish can use the inshore gutters and feed within easy casting range.

• Fish the last part of the flood and the first part of the ebb as a dependable starting plan, adjusting after local observation.
• High water can put fish close in, while very low water may expose a large expanse of sand and leave shallow, featureless water.
• A moderate onshore breeze can create useful colour and surf for bass and general bait fishing; a hard onshore blow can make the beach unsafe or unfishable.

Martello Bay is relatively accessible compared with isolated shingle or marsh marks, but it remains an exposed tidal beach with hard sea-defence structures. Treat the groynes, changing sand and the incoming tide with care, particularly in darkness or rough weather.

• Check tide times before fishing and leave a clear route back to the promenade; the rising tide can quickly shorten the usable beach.
• Do not stand on slippery, algae-covered groynes or attempt to cross them in surf.
• Keep well away from wave-washed groyne ends and avoid wading in rough or coloured water, where holes and strong lateral movement may be hard to see.
• Use a headtorch after dark, carry a charged phone and tell someone where you are fishing if attending alone.
• Give swimmers, paddleboarders, dog walkers and families ample room; never cast across a populated section of beach.
• The promenade provides comparatively level approach routes, but soft sand, steps, kerbs and the slope down to the beach may limit full wheelchair access depending on the entry point and tide.

As a built-up seafront location, Martello Bay has more nearby convenience than many dedicated sea-fishing marks. Facilities are seasonal and can be some distance from the exact fishing position, so arrive self-sufficient for a longer session.

• Shops, cafés and public conveniences may be available along the wider Clacton/Jaywick seafront, with opening hours often reduced outside the holiday season.
• Public bins may be present around the promenade, but take all line, bait packaging, hooks and litter home if bins are full or unavailable.
• Nearby parking is generally more realistic than at remote coastal venues, though spaces can be limited on warm weekends and during events.
• There may be little shelter once on the sand; take waterproofs, drinking water and enough bait and tackle for the session.
• A tackle shop is not necessarily within immediate walking distance, so obtain bait, replacement rigs and essentials before arriving.

The best local approach is to fish the water in front of you rather than treating the whole bay as identical. A short scouting walk can reveal the darker gutters, cleaner patches and quieter areas that make a significant difference to catches.

• Choose a quieter section away from the busiest bathing and promenade areas, especially in summer.
• Fish close to the side of a groyne only when it is safe and clear of other people; these edges can concentrate food, but can also snag gear.
• Start with one bait within the first trough and only increase distance if that rod is not producing.
• Fresh worm and small, neat baits often outfish oversized cocktails for the bay's common smaller species.
• If the sea is very clear and still in daylight, consider a dawn, dusk or evening session rather than persisting through the busiest hours.
• Keep fish only when they are legally retainable, in good condition and wanted for the table; return unwanted fish promptly and carefully.
• Rinse sand from reels, tripod joints and zips after the session, as the fine beach sand gets into everything.

Fishing should not be assumed to be unrestricted simply because the beach is open to the public. Seafront beaches can have seasonal, time-of-day or zone-specific controls intended to protect bathers and other users, and these may be changed by the local authority.

• Check current signs at every access point and consult the relevant Tendring District Council information before travelling, especially during the main bathing season.
• If signage restricts fishing on a particular beach section or during particular hours, use another permitted area rather than interpreting the rule yourself.
