Steeple Bay

Steeple Bay is a sheltered, shallow-water estuary mark on the Essex coast, looking out across the Blackwater estuary rather than open sea. It is principally a tide-dependent venue, valued for summer bass and flatfish fishing, with a useful autumn and winter mixed-bag potential when conditions are right.

The mark is at Steeple Bay, near the village of Steeple on the northern side of the Blackwater estuary in Essex. Fishing is generally associated with the beach and frontage around the bay, but access points and usable ground can vary with the tide, season and any holiday-park or private-land arrangements.

• A two-hook flapper or clipped-down rig with size-appropriate hooks is useful for flounder, dabs and whiting; use enough lead to hold without ploughing deeply into mud.
• For flounder, try ragworm, lugworm, maddies, small crab baits or carefully presented strips of fish. Short-to-medium casts are often sufficient.

This is a mark where the tide dictates the session. Large areas dry or become extremely shallow, so fishing generally improves as the flood brings fish close enough to reach and again around high water.

Steeple Bay is a relatively quiet coastal location rather than a fully serviced angling complex. Anglers should arrive self-sufficient and should not depend on facilities being open outside holiday or daytime periods.
