The Naze

6.3· Beach · Essex

The Naze is an exposed sand-and-shingle shore beneath the distinctive, actively eroding clay cliffs north of Walton-on-the-Naze. Access is mainly by walking the beach or coastal paths from Walton and the Naze visitor area; it fishes best around the flooding tide for flatfish, bass and rays, with winter whiting and occasional cod from deeper water. Keep well clear of the cliff base, check the tide carefully and expect a walk to find a clear, fishable section.

Why this rating?

  • Manageable wave movement: fishable with moderate shelter.
  • Gentle 11mph SW breeze puts a little life on the water without heavy drift.
  • High water at 08:51 and 21:31 — the last of the flood and first of the ebb are usually the prime spells.
  • Warm (22°C) — bright spells can push fish deeper, so favor low light.
  • Low rain risk (5%) — should stay comfortable all session.
  • Bite rating is strong today — fish the peak windows with confidence.

The Naze is a mobile, tide-led sand-and-shingle beach mark beneath actively eroding cliffs. It is best approached as a venue to read on the day: locate the freshest gullies, runnels, shell patches and bank drop-offs, then fish the flooding tide with one bait close and one toward deeper-looking water. It can produce reliable flatfish and seasonal bass, rays and winter whiting, but exposure, shifting beach profile and tide access can quickly dictate whether it is worth fishing.

  • Fish the flood around the newest gullies, not a remembered casting spot.
  • Know when the close-in gutter beats a horizon cast.
  • Turn a two-rod spread into a bass, flatfish, ray or whiting plan.
  • Avoid the high-tide cut-off and exposed conditions that spoil the session.
