Cart Gap

5.9· Beach · Norfolk

Cart Gap is an open, exposed sand-and-shingle beach between Happisburgh and Sea Palling, reached from the small beach car park and a short walk over the dunes. Timber groynes, occasional gullies and shifting surf give it a classic Norfolk beach-fishing feel: best around a flooding tide or after a bit of sea, with summer bass and rays giving way to whiting, dab and the chance of winter codling.

Cart Gap is a mobile, exposed sand-and-shingle surf beach where the day’s beach shape matters more than a fixed casting distance. Build a session around freshly formed gullies, the first trough and any bank edge, with the latter flood and early ebb the strongest general starting windows. A moderate, colouring sea can lift the mixed-bag potential, while calm cleaner water lends itself better to scaled-down flatfish tactics.

  • Fish the day’s gully, not last season’s casting mark
  • Know when the first trough beats a horizon cast
  • Match Cart Gap’s surf and tide to bass, whiting, rays or flatfish
  • Make the call to leave before rising water removes your room
