Scratby Beach

Scratby Beach is a broad, open North Sea surf beach on the Norfolk coast, between Hemsby and Caister-on-Sea. It is a straightforward venue for mobile beach fishing, with the best sport usually coming when there is some sea movement rather than in a prolonged flat calm.

• Expect predominantly sand, shallow-to-moderate surf, occasional cuts and gullies, and groynes or other coastal-defence features in places.
• It is an honest, weather-dependent mark rather than a deep-water “cast-and-catch” venue: reading the surf and moving to find a fishable gutter matters.
• The beach can produce mixed East Anglian shore species through the year, with autumn and winter generally the more productive periods for larger whiting and codling-type fishing.
• Conditions and beach shape change after gales, tides and coastal works, so a previously good hole or access point may not look the same on a later visit.

The mark is at Scratby on Norfolk’s east coast, accessed from the village and seafront routes rather than from a remote coastal track. Use the established public beach access points and avoid crossing fenced dunes, private holiday-park land or unstable cliff edges.

• Whiting are a principal cold-water target, especially on evening, night and winter tides; pouting and dabs may accompany them.
• Codling can show after a proper northerly or north-easterly sea, particularly from autumn into winter, although catches are never guaranteed and fish often move through in short spells.
• Bass may be present in warmer months and early autumn, especially around surfy water, gullies and areas holding sandeels or crab; handle all bass carefully and follow current national rules.
• Dabs, flounder and occasional sole are possible over the clean sand, with the better flatfish opportunities often linked to settled water, suitable tides and low-light fishing.
• Small rays, including thornback ray, can occur along this coast at suitable times, while dogfish, smooth-hound and various smaller species are possible in the warmer part of the year.
• Mackerel may pass within casting range in summer when baitfish are close, but this is far less reliable than fishing from a pier, harbour wall or boat.

Use standard surfcasting tackle capable of holding bottom in a cross-current and of working at range when necessary. A two-rod approach is useful: one bait placed short in the nearest productive gutter and another sent farther beyond the surf line.

• A 12–13 ft beachcaster, fixed-spool or multiplier reel, shockleader and appropriately rated terminal tackle cover most situations.
• Start with enough lead to hold securely; a breakout or grip lead is often preferable when wind, swell or lateral tide pull is strong.
• For whiting, dabs and mixed fish, clipped two-hook flapper rigs, loop rigs or simple pulley-style rigs with size-appropriate hooks work well; keep the presentation neat and bait fresh.
• For codling, bass, rays and larger fish, use a robust single-hook pulley or pennel arrangement with a larger bait and abrasion-resistant trace material where rough ground or shell is encountered.
• Ragworm, lugworm, peeler crab, squid, mackerel strip and sandeel-style baits all have a place; local bait availability is seasonal, so buy fresh bait locally where possible.
• Do not automatically cast as far as possible: fish commonly feed in the first gutter, especially at night, in coloured water or when a tide is pushing food along the shore.
• Lures can take bass or mackerel in clear summer water, but only fish them where the surf, wind and weed allow proper control and safe wading is unnecessary.

Scratby usually fishes best when the water has colour and the surf is working, but not when the beach is unsafe or the sea is so heavy that tackle cannot be presented. Tide timing is less important than finding a fishable feature, although the flood and the first part of the ebb are sensible starting windows.

• A moderate onshore breeze and a manageable swell can improve the beach by stirring food and creating defined gutters; a recent easterly or north-easterly blow can be particularly promising for winter species.
• Very large seas can make casting, holding bottom and safe access difficult, while heavy suspended weed can make fishing effectively impossible.
• In calmer summer conditions, dawn, dusk and darkness are often more productive than bright daytime, particularly for bass, sole, rays and feeding flatfish.
• Walk the beach around low water when it is safe to do so, noting gullies, banks, firm exits and places where water drains seaward; these features may be useful as the tide returns.
• Check a reliable local tide prediction and marine forecast before travelling, and allow for the fact that wind direction can materially alter the actual beach conditions.

This is an exposed, dynamic beach rather than a sheltered promenade mark, and the sea deserves respect even on a routine session. Coastal erosion is a significant local issue, so conditions at paths, dunes and cliff-backed sections can change without warning.

• Keep well away from cliff or dune faces, undercuts, loose edges and any fenced-off erosion areas; do not shelter beneath unstable ground.
• Never turn your back on the sea, particularly in rough weather, and keep a clear retreat route as the flood tide advances.
• Avoid wading unless conditions are exceptionally benign and you understand the ground; steep shelves, surf, rip currents and soft sand can make it hazardous.
• Fish with a headtorch after dark, carry a charged phone, tell somebody where you are going and wear suitable warm, waterproof clothing in winter.
• Take care around groynes, rock or timber coastal structures, which can be slippery and can concentrate currents; do not attempt to climb or cast from unsafe structures.
• Access over sand, steps and uneven paths is likely to be difficult for wheelchair users and anglers with limited mobility; assess the specific public access point in advance rather than assuming level seafront access.

Scratby is a holiday and residential coastal village rather than an isolated wilderness beach, so basic amenities may be available nearby. Provision is seasonal and individual businesses or public facilities can close, change hours or have parking limits.

• Look for parking, refreshment options and toilets around the village/seafront area, but check current opening times before an early-morning or night session.
• Tackle and fresh bait availability may be better in the wider Great Yarmouth, Caister or Hemsby area than directly at the beach; obtain bait before arriving where possible.
• Bring water, food, spare batteries, a first-aid kit, rubbish bags and all essential terminal tackle, especially if fishing after businesses have closed.
• Use designated bins where provided, but be prepared to take every item of litter, line, bait packaging and discarded tackle home.

The most consistent approach at Scratby is to treat it as a beach to be searched rather than a fixed peg. A short walk to locate a working gutter can be worth more than an extra hour casting from the first convenient path.

• Arrive in daylight for a first visit, identify the safest route back and pick a position that will remain clear as the tide rises.
• Watch where waves lose height or form a smoother, darker channel: this may indicate deeper water, though it can also indicate stronger outward flow, so do not wade into it.
• If bites are absent, vary distance before changing everything else; a bait at 30–50 yards can outfish one cast near the horizon.
• Keep baits streamlined in stronger surf, use bait elastic where appropriate and replace washed-out worm baits regularly.
• After a blow, choose a session when the sea has eased enough to hold bottom but remains coloured; that transition can be more productive than fishing at the height of the storm.
• Be considerate around holiday accommodation and other beach users, especially during summer evenings: keep noise and lights controlled and leave the access exactly as you found it.

There is no general indication that sea angling is permanently prohibited along the public beach at Scratby, but access and activity can be restricted locally or temporarily. Anglers should treat signs at the access point, council notices and any emergency coastal-safety closure as authoritative.

• Do not enter signed private land, protected dune areas, fenced erosion zones or any section closed for works, safety or conservation reasons.
• Seasonal dog controls, beach-management rules, parking conditions and public-right-of-way arrangements may apply locally; check the current Great Yarmouth Borough Council information and on-site signage.
