Donna Nook

Donna Nook is a wild, open Lincolnshire beach mark with a big-sky feel, shallow surf and the potential for rewarding winter fishing. It is best treated as a conditions-led venue rather than an easy, all-tide promenade mark, and its wildlife and Ministry of Defence setting demand particular care.

• It can produce a mixed North Sea catch, with the better fish often arriving with coloured water, a useful sea and the right tide.
• The beach is especially well known to visitors for its grey seals, so anglers should expect seasonal crowds and should give wildlife absolute priority.
• There is little natural shelter: wind direction, sea state and the state of the access routes can matter as much as the fishing forecast.

Donna Nook lies on the exposed Lincolnshire coast, north of Saltfleet and south of Cleethorpes, around the nationally important dune, saltmarsh and seal-colony area. Access should be made only from clearly signed public entrances and parking areas; do not assume that every track, seawall, beach section or gate is public.

• The fishing is principally open-beach fishing over sand, with changing gutters, shallow channels and occasional firmer patches rather than a fixed, deep-water feature.
• The area is close to, and in places affected by, the RAF Donna Nook Air Weapons Range and its controlled land; obey red flags, lights, gates, notices and any instructions from range staff without exception.
• Walking distances can be considerable, especially if the nearest sensible fishing water is beyond the main visitor area. Pack light enough to retreat safely if weather or access changes.
• Avoid trampling dunes, saltmarsh and roped-off ground. These habitats are fragile and some routes may be closed for conservation or operational reasons.

Donna Nook is primarily a mixed surf-beach venue, with the species list changing markedly through the year and after rough weather. Winter generally provides the strongest chance of codling and whiting, while warmer months can bring more varied sport.

• Codling are the headline target when there is a coloured, moving sea, particularly through the colder part of the year.
• Whiting, dabs and flounder are regular possibilities and can provide useful sport when larger fish are absent.
• Bass may show in warmer water and around a little surf, while dogfish, rays and smooth-hounds can be possible in suitable summer conditions.
• Lesser-spotted dogfish, eels and small flatfish may also appear; exact catches vary greatly with season, bait, tide and the ever-changing beach profile.
• Handle all fish carefully, return unwanted fish promptly and be prepared to release protected or regulated species in accordance with current rules.

A straightforward beachcasting approach works well, but rigs should be chosen for the sea state rather than for maximum casting distance alone. Fresh, properly presented bait and a stable rig are usually more important than forcing an extreme cast across a shallow beach.

• A sturdy beachcaster, fixed-spool or multiplier reel, shock leader and suitable grip lead are sensible for the tide and crosswinds commonly encountered here.
• Use clipped-down pulley, pennel or flowing rigs for codling and whiting baits; stronger, simpler rigs are often preferable when weed is moving through.
• Lugworm, ragworm, peeler crab, mussel, squid and fish baits all have a place. Bigger crab, mussel or squid cocktails are traditional options when seeking codling in coloured water.
• For dabs and other flatfish, scale down to a two-hook flapper or flowing rig with smaller hooks and worm strips, lugworm or tipped baits.
• Start by fishing one bait at a sensible range and one closer in if conditions permit. On this type of coast, fish can feed surprisingly close to the edge of the surf.
• Carry spare rigs, leads and a bait knife, and use a headtorch after dark; make sure it does not compromise awareness of the tide, other beach users or any operational signals.

Donna Nook usually fishes best when the water has some movement and colour, rather than in a clear, flat calm. The productive window is often around the flood and high water, but the exact beach shape can make a different stage of tide fish better on any given visit.

• A moderate northerly or easterly sea can stir food and improve winter codling prospects, but it can also make the beach unsafe or unfishable.
• Westerly winds may make the beach more comfortable, though they can flatten and clear the water; this can favour smaller baits and species such as dabs or whiting.
• Large spring tides can flood access routes quickly and leave very little safe margin on the lower beach. Establish an escape route before setting up.
• Check tide times, height, wind, swell and any coastal weather warnings immediately before travelling. Do not rely on a previous visit, as channels and the high-water line change.
• Night fishing can be productive, particularly for whiting and codling, but darkness increases the risks from soft ground, rising water, range restrictions and poor orientation.

This is a remote, natural coastline rather than a fully serviced fishing promenade, and it deserves a cautious approach. The main hazards are the fast-rising tide, soft sand or mud, exposed weather, darkness, wildlife disturbance and nearby military-range controls.

• Never fish below the tide line without a clear, dry retreat route, and do not let a flooding gutter or channel cut off your return.
• Wear suitable waterproof footwear and warm layers; cold wind, driving rain and soft terrain can turn a short session into a difficult walk.
• Mobile reception can be variable on exposed coasts, so tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return.
• Keep well away from seals, especially pups, and never place yourself between animals and the sea. Keep dogs under the relevant local controls and away from wildlife.
• Do not touch unfamiliar objects, debris or anything that could be military ordnance. Move away, keep others clear and report it through the appropriate emergency or official channel.
• Accessibility is limited away from the main visitor access: sand, uneven ground, long distances and weather can make independent access difficult. Check current site information if step-free access is important.

Facilities are limited and should not be treated as being available at the fishing beach itself. The seal-viewing season can bring temporary visitor provision and heavy use of nearby parking, but this may not suit an angler arriving outside those periods or fishing after dark.

• Use designated car parks only, and do not block tracks, gates, emergency access or range entrances.
• Take drinking water, food, a first-aid kit, a charged phone, waste bags and all fishing essentials with you.
• Do not rely on nearby toilets, tackle supplies, shelter or lighting; arrange these before travelling.
• Take all litter, line, bait packaging and discarded tackle home. Lost line and hooks are a serious hazard to seals, birds and other wildlife.

The most productive approach at Donna Nook is to arrive early, walk the beach in daylight and let the water in front of you dictate the session. A modest-looking gutter, a slight colour change or a line of breaking water is often more valuable than simply casting as far as possible.

• Fish away from the busiest seal-viewing area where access is lawful and where doing so does not disturb wildlife or obstruct visitors.
• After a blow, look for water that is coloured but still safely fishable; if the surf is too powerful to hold bottom or retreat safely, leave it for another day.
• Keep casts low and controlled when other people are present, and avoid fishing close to walkers, dogs, birdwatchers and seal viewers.
• Use fresh local-quality bait where possible, but avoid leaving bait, fish remains or packaging on the beach, as this can attract wildlife and create conflict.
• If you are new to the mark, make a daylight reconnaissance visit first. It is much easier to understand access, tide escape routes and the beach profile before attempting a night session.

Fishing should not be assumed to be unrestricted simply because the shoreline is open. Donna Nook includes sensitive conservation land and is affected by nearby military activity, so the legal position can depend on the precise place, access route, season and any temporary notice in force.

• Check current notices from the land manager, Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust, Natural England, the local authority and the Ministry of Defence/RAF Donna Nook before travelling.
• Obey all on-site signage, barriers, red flags, warning lights and staff directions. A range closure, conservation closure or access restriction overrides any fishing plan.
• Do not enter signed restricted areas, dunes, saltmarsh, fenced habitat or military land in order to reach a fishing position.
• Check current national and local rules for minimum landing sizes, protected species, bass restrictions, shellfish collection and any relevant Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority byelaws before retaining fish.
• Recreational sea angling does not normally require an Environment Agency freshwater rod licence in England, but this does not remove the need to follow access rules, conservation byelaws and fisheries regulations.
• The absence of a sign on one visit is not proof of permission. If there is any doubt about fishing from a particular section, choose another lawful mark or seek confirmation from the relevant site authority.
