Humberston Creek

Humberston Creek is a tidal, estuary-influenced shore mark on the Lincolnshire coast south of central Cleethorpes, where a deep, fast-filling creek channel meets the open beach. It can produce enjoyable mixed fishing, particularly when fish use the channel and its edges to move with the tide, but it is a mark where tide awareness matters as much as tackle choice.

• Expect a mobile venue rather than a fixed pier-style peg: the channel, sandbars and gullies can alter after rough weather and spring tides.
• It is generally better suited to anglers prepared to read the water, fish changing conditions and move to safe ground as the tide rises.
• The most realistic target is a varied Humber-estuary catch rather than guaranteed specimen fishing on every visit.
• Treat local catch reports as a guide to what is running at the time; this stretch can be very seasonal.

The mark is reached from the Humberston/Cleethorpes seafront area, around the tidal creek and beach by the Humberston Fitties end of the resort. Public beach access is commonly used by anglers, but routes, parking arrangements and usable fishing space can be affected by holiday activity, beach works, erosion and the state of the tide.

• Approach on established public paths and beach access points rather than cutting across dunes, saltmarsh, private chalet land or fenced ground.
• The most productive-looking water is often the creek mouth, its deeper outside bends and the runnels or gullies leading out across the beach; these features shift, so inspect them on a low tide before committing to an evening session.
• There may be a considerable walk over soft sand depending on where the channel lies and where you park, so a compact trolley or backpack is often more practical than a heavily loaded barrow.
• Do not assume that a route available at low water remains passable later: the creek can isolate sections of beach quickly on a flooding tide.
• Give other beach users room, especially in warmer months, and avoid casting where walkers, dogs, horses or water users may cross the line of fire.

Humberston Creek is principally a mixed estuary and open-beach mark, with flatfish often providing the most dependable sport when conditions are suitable. The better catches change markedly with season, water clarity, bait availability and whether the channel is carrying enough depth.

• Flounder are a key possibility in and around the creek, particularly when they are moving through the estuary system; small, well-presented worm baits are usually more useful than oversized offerings.
• Dab and plaice can show over cleaner patches of sand, with plaice generally more likely when clearer, warmer water and suitable shellfish ground are present.
• Whiting are common cold-water targets after dark in the autumn and winter, while codling may occur during the same period when there is coloured water and a bit of sea running.
• Bass can appear in warmer months around the creek mouth, surf line and bait-rich shallows, especially at dawn, dusk or in slightly stirred water.
• Eels, small rays and other occasional estuary visitors are possible, but should be regarded as bonus catches rather than a reason to expect a specialist ray venue.
• Small fish are frequent, so use sensible hook sizes and return undersized or unwanted fish carefully and promptly.

A two-rod beach setup covers most situations, although one rod placed accurately in the channel edge can outfish a long cast made blindly across the flats. The aim is normally to put bait where moving fish can find it, not simply to achieve maximum distance.

• Use a beachcaster of suitable rating with a reliable fixed-spool or multiplier reel, a shockleader where casting requires one, and abrasion-resistant terminal tackle for shell, stones and debris.
• A clipped-down pulley rig, pulley pennel or similar robust single-hook rig is a practical winter choice for whiting and potential codling; keep hook pattern and size proportionate to the bait.
• For flounder, dab and plaice, try a flowing trace, light paternoster or two-hook flapper with smaller hooks. A touch of coloured bead, spinner blade or attractor can help for plaice, but avoid overcomplicating a rig in a strong tide.
• Lugworm, ragworm, maddies, peeler crab and fresh crab are strong general baits. Lug or rag tipped with squid can add durability for whiting and codling, while crab is a worthwhile bass or larger flatfish option when available.
• Cast across or slightly down-tide of a channel edge where safe, then keep enough tension to detect bites without dragging the rig out of position. Regularly check for weed and reset if a lead has been shifted.
• Carry a range of grip leads. The Humber’s tidal flow can demand more holding power than the apparently gentle beach surface suggests.

Fishing is commonly most worthwhile as water begins to cover the gutters and creek margin, through high water, and for part of the ebb while there is still safe, fishable depth. Exact productive windows vary with the channel’s position, so a low-water reconnaissance is particularly valuable here.

• Moderate to larger tides can concentrate water movement in the creek, but the same tides also create the greatest access hazard and can make holding bottom difficult.
• A flooding tide often brings fish up the channel; fishing the first part of the ebb can also be effective as food and fish are drawn back towards the mouth.
• Calm, clear summer conditions can favour finesse for flatfish and bass, whereas coloured autumn or winter water with a moderate sea can improve the odds of whiting and codling.
• Very rough conditions may rearrange the banks, fill gullies with weed and make the creek margins unstable. If the sea is unsafe or the channel is difficult to read, choose a more sheltered mark.
• Check a current local tide prediction and weather forecast before travelling. Do not rely on a previous trip’s timing, as tide height, wind direction and channel changes alter the practical fishing window.

This is not a casual low-tide wander mark: deep mud, soft sand, fast tidal flow and a creek that fills behind you are the main hazards. Plan an exit before fishing, keep a constant eye on the waterline and avoid putting yourself in a position where crossing the creek becomes necessary.

• Never attempt to wade or cross the creek unless you have specific local knowledge and can clearly assess the route; channels can be deeper and faster than they look.
• Fish with a companion where possible, tell somebody your plan, carry a charged phone in a waterproof pouch and know how to call emergency services if required.
• Wear suitable boots with secure soles, warm waterproof layers and a headtorch after dark. A flotation device is sensible around deep tidal channels, particularly when fishing alone or in poor visibility.
• Avoid low, steep or undercut creek edges. Sand and mud can collapse under body weight, and a hooked fish is never worth stepping into unsafe ground for.
• The uneven beach, soft sand and variable walk from parking make access difficult for anglers with limited mobility. There is no reason to assume a firm, step-free route or accessible fishing platform at the creek itself.
• In summer, be alert to heat, sun exposure and busy beach traffic; in winter, wind chill and darkness can become serious quickly on this exposed coast.

Facilities are principally found in the wider Humberston and Cleethorpes area rather than at the fishing position itself. Treat the creek as a self-sufficient beach session and bring the essentials with you.

• Parking, shops, food outlets and public toilets may be available in the surrounding resort area, but their opening, charging and seasonal availability can change.
• There is unlikely to be tackle, shelter, lighting, freshwater or a safe fish-cleaning facility at the actual mark.
• Take enough drinking water, bait protection, spare leads, a first-aid kit and bags for all litter and discarded line.
• If purchasing bait locally, check opening times before travelling; do not depend on finding fresh bait late in the day or out of season.

The best local habit at Humberston Creek is to arrive early enough to watch the ground before the tide covers it. Identifying the deepest run, the firmest route back and a safe casting line is usually more valuable than adding extra distance to a cast.

• Fish the obvious changes in depth: the darker water of a runnel, a channel lip, the seam where clearer beach water meets stirred creek water, and the edge of a sandbar.
• Start with one bait close to the channel feature and another at a different range, then adjust rather than repeatedly casting both rods as far as possible.
• Keep baits fresh. Small fish and crabs can strip worm quickly, especially in warmer water.
• For flatfish, scale down before assuming there are no fish: shorter traces, modest bait cocktails and regular rebaiting can make a marked difference.
• For winter fish, fish into darkness if conditions and safe access allow, using bigger, secure baits and enough lead to hold station.
• Photograph and return fish over wet sand or a wet unhooking mat where possible, and do not leave bait, line, hooks or tackle debris on a popular beach.

There is no confirmed blanket prohibition on sea angling at Humberston Creek, but access and fishing can be restricted temporarily by local signage, works, safety closures, private land boundaries or beach-management measures. Check notices at the access point on the day and move on if a clearly signed restriction applies.

• Fish only from land and access routes open to the public; do not enter private holiday-park land, protected dune or saltmarsh habitat, fenced areas, or any zone carrying a no-access notice.
• Sea anglers do not normally need an Environment Agency rod licence when fishing tidal salt water, but boundaries can be complex around drains and upper tidal channels. Confirm the position with the Environment Agency if you intend to fish inland or freshwater-connected water.
• Observe current national and local rules on minimum sizes, catch limits, protected species and any seasonal measures. These can change, so consult official government guidance and the relevant Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority rather than relying on old tackle-shop advice.
• Check current rules before retaining bass, shellfish or any species subject to special controls; if uncertain, release the fish.
• Follow local dog, vehicle, litter and beach-use bylaws, and be particularly considerate during busy holiday periods.
