Spurn Point

Spurn Point is a dramatic, constantly changing sand-and-shingle spit at the mouth of the Humber, offering genuinely wild sea fishing rather than an easy, fixed promenade mark. It can produce excellent mixed fishing, especially in autumn and winter, but the exposure, tide and long walk mean it is best treated as a serious session rather than a casual cast.

• Fishable water exists on both the North Sea beach and Humber-estuary sides of the spit, with very different conditions on each.
• The mark is renowned more for its setting, tidal movement and seasonal potential than for reliable day-to-day catches.
• Conditions can alter markedly after storms or high tides, including the shape of beaches, gullies and access routes.

Spurn lies south-east of Kilnsea in the East Riding of Yorkshire, at the point where the Humber meets the North Sea. It is a narrow, mobile landscape, so the practical fishing area and route to it should never be assumed to be unchanged from a previous visit.

• Most visitors approach from the Kilnsea/Spurn Discovery Centre area and continue towards the Point on foot, by cycle or via any transport service operating at the time.
• Vehicle access along the spit is restricted and can change; do not assume that it is possible, permitted or sensible to drive to a chosen fishing spot.
• The walk to the far end is substantial, particularly with a tripod, bait, tackle and landing gear, so travel light but do not compromise on safety equipment.
• The North Sea side is open, exposed beach fishing; the Humber side is more sheltered from easterly weather but is influenced by the estuary's powerful flow and commercial navigation.
• Check the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust's current visitor-access information before travelling, especially after storm damage, flooding or high tides.

Spurn can offer a broad seasonal mix, with the sea side generally producing the more classic open-coast species and the Humber side offering estuary fish. What is present depends heavily on water temperature, bait movement, weather and the state of tide.

• Autumn and winter: codling, whiting, dab and flounder are realistic targets, with the best codling prospects often associated with coloured water, a sea running and suitable tides.
• Spring and summer: bass, smooth-hound, rays, plaice, dabs, flounder, dogfish and occasional mackerel can feature, although catches are never guaranteed.
• Humber-side fishing can produce flounder particularly well, along with bass, eels and other estuarine species where safe, fishable ground is available.
• Sea fish move through rather than live permanently at one convenient casting range; a good gully, colour line or bait trail can matter more than an extra-long cast.
• Handle undersized fish and non-target species carefully, return them promptly, and keep only fish that are legal and genuinely wanted for the table.

A sturdy beach setup is the sensible starting point, but the exact approach should be chosen for the side of the spit, tide strength and weather rather than habit. Carry enough lead to hold bottom safely, and avoid trying to fish water that is obviously too fast for your tackle.

• For codling and whiting, use clipped distance rigs or simple pulley-style rigs with strong hooks, fresh or well-presented crab, lugworm, ragworm, squid, mussel or fish baits according to season and local availability.
• In heavy water, plain grip leads and streamlined rigs are usually more useful than chasing maximum range; lost tackle is common where tide and shifting ground combine.
• For flounder and dabs, smaller hooks, worm baits and a shorter-to-medium cast can be effective, particularly where a defined edge or gully is within reach.
• For bass, use mobile tactics where conditions allow: fishworm, crab, sandeel or fish baits around gullies, surf lines and moving coloured water, without wading into unsafe depth.
• Mackerel feathers, lures and spinners may work in clear summer water, but only cast them where there is room and no risk of fouling other beach users.
• A tripod, headtorch, spare batteries, knife, disgorgers, long-nose pliers and a landing net or drop net where appropriate are useful; do not rely on a phone torch as your only light.

Tide is the defining factor at Spurn. The meeting of the North Sea and the Humber can create rapid currents, confused water and fast-changing margins, particularly close to the Point and on the estuary side.

• Plan the entire session around the tide, including the walk in and out; parts of the route and beach can be affected by high water, surge and flooding.
• The North Sea beach is often most comfortable to fish in a manageable surf, with a rising tide and the period around high water often worth attention, but the productive window varies with the exact beach shape.
• Easterly or north-easterly weather can put colour and movement into the sea and improve winter fishing potential, while also making the mark substantially more hazardous.
• Strong winds can make casting, sheltering equipment and returning safely difficult; a forecast that is merely 'fishable' elsewhere may be unsuitable on this exposed spit.
• The Humber side can appear calm while carrying formidable tidal flow. If your lead will not hold, or the water is pushing hard around your position, move back or stop rather than escalating tackle weight indefinitely.
• Obtain up-to-date tide times, weather, wind direction and any flood or access warnings before leaving home.

Spurn is not a forgiving mark: it is remote, exposed and bordered by deep, moving water and soft intertidal ground. It is unsuitable for anyone unable to manage a long, uneven approach or safely react to changing weather and tide.

• Never fish alone if possible, and tell someone exactly where you intend to be and when you expect to return.
• Stay well away from the Humber's main channel, steep eroded edges, unstable shingle banks, groynes and any soft mud or saltmarsh margins.
• Do not attempt to cross mud, shallow-looking channels or flooded sections of the spit; estuarine mud can trap a person and the tide can cut off routes quickly.
• Wear suitable waterproof footwear with grip, warm layers, a flotation aid where appropriate, and carry a fully charged phone in a waterproof case.
• Night fishing increases the risk considerably. If fishing after dark, learn the route in daylight, carry independent lights and leave before conditions become difficult.
• Emergency access can be slow. In a life-threatening coastal emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
• There are no guarantees of wheelchair-friendly or step-free access to fishing water; surfaces, gradients and access arrangements are variable and should be checked directly with the site manager.

Facilities are centred around the Kilnsea/Spurn visitor area rather than at a convenient fishing peg on the Point itself. Treat the fishing ground as self-sufficient and take all essentials with you.

• Parking, toilets, visitor information and refreshments may be available near the Discovery Centre or nearby village facilities, subject to opening times and seasonal arrangements.
• There are no dependable tackle, bait, shelter, fresh-water or toilet facilities at the remote end of the spit.
• Buy bait, food, fuel and any essential tackle before arriving in the immediate Spurn area; the nearest full range of services is some distance away.
• Take out every item brought in, including line, bait packaging, discarded rigs and fish waste.

The best approach at Spurn is to arrive early, walk and watch before setting up, then fish the water that is actually in front of you. A newly formed gully, a cleaner patch among coloured water or a line of feeding birds can be more valuable than a famous old peg.

• Speak politely to other anglers and keep plenty of room: the narrow land and shifting beaches can make safe casting space limited.
• Use fresh local bait where possible, especially for winter codling and estuary species; quality presentation often outperforms simply adding more bait.
• Carry fewer rods on the long walk. One well-managed rod is safer and often more productive than multiple rods in a strong tide.
• Avoid leaving rods unattended while you explore; the tide can alter quickly and gear may be lost, damaged or become a hazard to others.
• Respect the reserve's wildlife, especially roosting birds and seals. Keep noise and lights low, keep dogs under the site's required control, and do not disturb animals for a photograph or casting position.
• After severe weather, regard all previous reports of gullies, tracks and productive areas as historical rather than current information.

Spurn is within a sensitive wildlife and conservation landscape, and access rules may be imposed or altered by the land manager for safety, habitat protection or operational reasons. Sea angling is not treated here as automatically prohibited, but anglers must check the current on-site notices and land-manager guidance before fishing.

• Follow all Yorkshire Wildlife Trust signage, temporary closures, path restrictions and instructions from wardens or authorised staff.
• Do not fish from, climb on or obstruct navigation, flood-defence or other operational structures, and keep clear of commercial shipping activity in the Humber.
• National fisheries rules and regional byelaws can apply to species, minimum conservation reference sizes, retained catch, protected species and methods. Check current UK Government, Marine Management Organisation and local Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority guidance.
• Additional restrictions can apply to bass and migratory fish; do not rely on old social-media advice or historic bag/size limits.
• A rod licence is not normally required for ordinary sea angling in England, but different rules can apply if targeting migratory salmonids or fishing connected freshwater. Confirm the current position with official sources.
• Take no wildlife, shells, eggs, plants or bait from protected areas unless it is clearly lawful and permitted, and do not collect bait where signs or site rules prohibit it.
