Easington Beach

Easington Beach is a wild, open Holderness coast mark near the village of Easington, south of Withernsea. It is principally a surf-fishing venue, best known for autumn and winter codling fishing when the sea is coloured and carrying movement.

• The beach can fish very differently from one tide or one stretch to the next: deep gullies, clay scars, boulders and sand changes are part of its character.
• It is not a sheltered, easy-access promenade mark; conditions and safe access should dictate whether to fish.
• The vicinity of the Easington gas-terminal complex makes it especially important to respect fencing, warning signs and any restricted land.

The fishable shore is approached from the Easington village area and nearby public coastal access points, rather than through industrial premises. Coastal erosion is a major issue on this part of the Holderness coast, so paths, steps and access arrangements can change or be closed.

• Use only signed public routes, public parking and established beach access points.
• Do not attempt to enter the gas-terminal site, cross security boundaries or use apparently convenient tracks that are private or signed as restricted.
• Expect a walk over soft sand, shingle or uneven foreshore; travelling light is sensible.
• Check the route before setting out, particularly after storms, cliff falls or periods of high tide.
• Avoid standing beneath unstable cliff edges or on recently fallen material.

Codling are the headline target in the colder months, with the best sessions often linked to a lively coloured sea. Whiting, dabs and flounder provide much of the general beach fishing, while other species appear according to season and sea state.

• Codling and occasional larger cod are most sought after from autumn through winter.
• Whiting can be numerous on suitable autumn and winter evenings and nights.
• Dabs and flounder are regular flatfish possibilities, especially over cleaner sandier sections.
• Bass may show in warmer water and around food-rich, disturbed ground, but they are not as dependable here as the winter codling fishing.
• Small rays, dogfish and smooth-hound-type fishing may be possible in the warmer season when local conditions and ground allow; treat these as opportunistic rather than guaranteed targets.

A conventional beach-ledger approach covers most situations at Easington, with bait, rig choice and casting distance adjusted to the ground and tide. The most productive water is often a gully, edge of a scar or coloured, turbulent patch rather than simply the furthest cast.

• A sturdy beach rod and reel capable of controlling a grip lead in surf are appropriate when the sea has push.
• Use a pulley-style or clipped rig where snags, boulders or heavier leads are likely, as it can help lift a hooked fish clear on retrieval.
• One-hook or two-hook flapper rigs are useful for whiting, dabs and general bait fishing over cleaner ground.
• Lugworm, ragworm, peeler crab, squid and fish baits all have a place; crab and worm cocktails are classic cold-water codling offerings.
• Carry a selection of leads and use sufficient grip to hold bottom safely; if tackle repeatedly drags, increase hold or reconsider the spot.
• Start by casting at different ranges to locate fishable water, then concentrate on the depth or feature producing bites.

Easington usually improves when there is some colour and movement in the North Sea, rather than a flat, crystal-clear calm. Moderate surf can bring fish close, but a full gale, severe swell or exceptional tide can make the beach unsafe and unfishable.

• The flood, high-water period and first part of the ebb are commonly worth concentrating on, though the best window changes with the state of the sea and local beach shape.
• Evening, darkness and dawn are often productive for codling and whiting.
• A north or north-easterly sea can transform the fishing after it has had time to colour the water, but it also creates the roughest and most hazardous conditions.
• Very clear, settled water can favour smaller flatfish and lighter general fishing, while often making codling less reliable.
• Check tide times, weather, swell and wind direction immediately before travelling; never rely on a previous visit's beach profile.

This is an exposed natural beach with potentially fast-rising water, soft ground and unstable eroding cliffs. It is unsuitable for anyone who cannot safely manage uneven terrain, a beach walk and a self-sufficient retreat before the tide reaches the upper shore.

• Fish with a clear exit route and leave ample time to return; do not allow the tide to cut off your path.
• Keep well away from cliff bases and fresh erosion scars, even if the beach appears quiet.
• Wear flotation-appropriate clothing where conditions warrant it, plus warm waterproof layers, a headtorch and suitable footwear with grip.
• Avoid fishing alone in rough weather, and tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return.
• Mobile signal can be variable on exposed stretches; carry a charged phone but do not treat it as a substitute for sound judgement.
• Surf, wind-blown sand and darkness can make tackle handling difficult, so secure equipment and avoid wading beyond safe shallows.

Facilities are limited at the shore itself, and anglers should regard Easington as a bring-your-own venue. The village may offer basic services, but availability and opening times should be checked before a trip.

• Take drinking water, food, a first-aid kit, spare lighting and all bait and tackle required for the session.
• Use only legitimate parking and avoid blocking access, gateways, residential roads or operational routes.
• Public toilets, shops and tackle supplies should not be assumed to be available at the beach.
• Take all litter, discarded line, bait packaging and broken tackle home; this coastline is environmentally sensitive and heavily used by wildlife.

The key local skill is reading the beach on arrival rather than fishing from habit. A short daylight reconnaissance can reveal channels, darker water, rougher patches and the safest way back before an evening session begins.

• Look for a defined gully, a change from clean sand to broken ground, or a rippled coloured run; these features can hold feeding fish.
• Do not set up directly in the deepest-looking water if it is under an unstable cliff or compromises your escape route.
• Fresh crab baits are often worth saving for the best part of a coloured flood, while worm and squid can keep bites coming from whiting and flatfish.
• Keep casts controlled and tackle simple when the sea is rough; finding and holding fishable ground matters more than maximum distance.
• Speak to local tackle shops or responsible local anglers for current information, as beach erosion and access can alter rapidly.

There is no general indication that all fishing from the public beach at Easington is prohibited, but access beside industrial infrastructure and coastal management works may be restricted at short notice. Anglers must comply with all on-site signs, landowner instructions, conservation notices and any temporary safety closures.

• Do not fish from, enter or cast across fenced gas-terminal land, security zones, structures or work areas.
• Check current national and local rules for minimum sizes, catch limits, protected species and any seasonal conservation measures before retaining fish.
• Return undersized, protected or unwanted fish carefully and minimise handling time.
• Observe any notices relating to cliff safety, path closures, beach works, emergency activity or pollution incidents.
• If signage conflicts with older online reports of access, follow the signage and choose another public section of coast.
