Holmpton Beach

Holmpton Beach is a quiet, exposed Holderness-coast mark south of Withernsea, valued for open-water beach fishing rather than comfort or easy access. It can produce the usual East Yorkshire surf species, with its best spells generally coming when there is colour and movement in the North Sea.

The mark lies below the rapidly eroding cliffs around Holmpton, on the coast between Withernsea and Easington. Access arrangements can change with cliff erosion, landslips and private land, so treat it as a remote, variable-access beach rather than a formal promenade venue.

• Approach via the Holmpton area and use only clearly legitimate public access, public rights of way or any signed beach access.
• Do not assume an old path, stairway or gap in a boundary is safe or lawful; cliff-top paths and beach steps can disappear after storms.
• Parking is limited in the village and on nearby roads. Park considerately, keep clear of entrances and do not block narrow lanes.
• The walk to the shore may be awkward, steep, muddy or impossible after erosion. Carry only what you can safely manage.
• Once on the beach, anglers can normally spread out to find cleaner sand, channels, gullies or patches of firmer ground, but avoid fishing directly beneath unstable cliff faces.

Holmpton is primarily a surf-and-beach venue, and catches reflect season, sea state and the amount of coloured water along the Holderness coast. Winter codling are the headline possibility, while flatter-fish and smaller species provide much of the regular fishing at other times.

• Codling and occasional better cod are the principal cold-water target, especially after an onshore blow has stirred the sea.
• Whiting can offer reliable autumn and winter sport, often after dark.
• Dabs and flounder are regular possibilities over suitable sandier ground.
• Dogfish may show in the warmer months and on calmer evening tides.
• Bass are possible in summer and early autumn, particularly around shallow surf, moving water and bait concentrations.
• Small rays may occur at times, although they should be regarded as a bonus rather than a certainty from this mark.
• Lesser-spotted species such as pouting and small flatfish can also appear, particularly where mixed or slightly rough ground is present.

A simple, robust beach setup is more useful here than ultra-light tactics: the beach is exposed, the sea can build quickly and rough patches may cost tackle. Match bait and lead size to the conditions, rather than trying to cast as far as possible on every tide.

• Use a beachcaster or other capable shore rod with a reel holding sufficient line for rough, moving water.
• A two-hook clipped rig is a useful all-round choice for whiting, dabs and mixed fishing; use snoods suited to the expected weed and ground.
• For codling, try a stronger pulley or pennel-style presentation with a larger bait and a robust hook pattern.
• Lugworm, ragworm, peeler crab, squid, mackerel and cocktail baits all have a place; crab and worm are often worth prioritising for codling when available.
• Fish baits can be effective for whiting, dogfish and occasional larger predators, especially after dark.
• Carry a range of plain or grip leads. A grip lead is often essential when an onshore swell or lateral tide is moving the line.
• Start by casting into visible surf lines, channels and coloured-water edges. Productive fish are often well within normal casting range.
• A headtorch, spare batteries, bait apron, long-handled disgorger and a landing plan for larger fish are sensible for night sessions.

Holmpton is highly dependent on sea state. The most productive sessions often coincide with a settling or building onshore sea, but those same conditions can make the beach unsafe or unfishable.

• A moderate north-easterly or easterly sea that has coloured the water can improve codling prospects in autumn and winter.
• Fish often feed well around the flood and high-water period, when the surf reaches deeper channels and brings food close in.
• The first part of the ebb can also be worthwhile where it leaves defined gullies, but do not let the tide cut off your route from the beach.
• Calm, clear conditions can be better for dabs, flounder, dogfish and selective evening bass fishing, though catches may be slower.
• Strong onshore winds, heavy surf and floating weed can make holding bottom difficult and may render the mark unsuitable.
• Check a current local tide table and marine forecast before travelling; tidal height, wind direction and swell matter more here than a generic ‘best tide’ rule.
• Night fishing can be productive for codling and whiting, but only if you already know the access and can retreat safely.

This is not an easy-access family beach mark. The Holderness cliffs are actively eroding, and a safe-looking shoreline can become hazardous quickly with tide, swell or a cliff fall.

• Never fish beneath overhanging, cracked or freshly fallen cliffs; keep well away from the cliff base even in apparently calm weather.
• Do not climb unstable cliff faces, use damaged steps or attempt improvised descents.
• Check your exit route on arrival and keep an eye on the incoming tide. Avoid being trapped against the cliffs by a rising sea.
• Wear sturdy footwear with grip; mud, clay, loose shingle and seaweed can be extremely slippery.
• A buoyancy aid is sensible near rough water, and a fully charged phone in a waterproof pouch is advisable.
• Fish with a companion where possible, particularly in darkness or after a blow, and tell someone where you are going.
• The uneven approach, possible steep descent and soft or shingly beach make this mark unsuitable for most wheelchair users and difficult for anglers with limited mobility.
• If conditions, access or cliff stability look doubtful, choose a safer established venue instead.

Facilities at the beach itself should not be expected. Holmpton is a small settlement, so plan the session as self-sufficient and use services responsibly in nearby larger towns if needed.

• There are no facilities to rely on at the fishing area itself: take water, food, a first-aid kit and all essential tackle.
• Do not assume toilets, bins, lighting, bait supplies or a tackle shop will be available locally.
• Buy bait, fuel and other essentials before arrival, particularly for evening sessions.
• Take all litter, discarded line, bait packaging and damaged rigs home; coastal wildlife and livestock are vulnerable to fishing debris.
• Keep vehicle noise and disturbance low in the village, especially early or late in the day.

The most successful approach at Holmpton is to remain flexible: walk the accessible beach, read the water and fish the best feature rather than committing to a familiar casting spot. Fresh local reports can be particularly valuable because both the beach profile and access can alter after storms.

• Arrive in daylight on a first visit so that you can assess the descent, cliff condition, tide line and escape route.
• Look for darker water, breaks in the surf, small drains and gullies rather than automatically casting over the first breakers.
• Carry spare rigs and leads, as clay, stones, debris and variable ground can produce losses.
• In rough water, use a larger, streamlined bait that stays on the hook; secure soft baits with bait elastic.
• For winter codling, concentrate effort around a coloured, moving sea rather than expecting peak results in prolonged clear, flat conditions.
• Keep casts sensible in strong wind. A well-presented bait in the near surf is usually preferable to an unsafe or poorly controlled maximum cast.
• Speak to local tackle shops or angling clubs shortly before travelling for current reports on beach access, weed, fish movement and any new erosion.

There is no confirmed general fishing prohibition for Holmpton Beach, but access and any local restrictions must be checked on the day because coastal erosion and land management can alter what is permitted. Sea anglers remain responsible for following national fisheries rules and for respecting private land, public rights of way and any temporary notices.

• Obey all signs, barriers and closure notices, especially those relating to cliff danger, erosion, defence works or restricted access.
• Do not cross private land, climb fences or park where prohibited merely to reach the shore.
