Withernsea Beach

Withernsea Beach is a classic Holderness Coast sea-fishing venue, combining an open sandy shoreline with substantial groynes and sea-defence structures. It is best known for autumn and winter codling fishing, though it can provide worthwhile mixed fishing through much of the year when sea conditions suit.

• The mark runs alongside the resort frontage, where the beach is backed by a promenade and defended coastline rather than being a remote, natural strand.
• It is a practical choice for the mobile shore angler: fish the open gaps between structures, but move if one section is producing coloured water, a better gutter, or cleaner ground.
• Expectations should be realistic in settled, very clear conditions; this coast often fishes far better after a suitable onshore blow has stirred colour into the water.

Withernsea is on the East Riding of Yorkshire coast, with beach access available from the seafront and nearby public approaches. The town setting makes it considerably easier to reach than many Holderness beaches, although the exact route onto the sand can change with tide level and coastal works.

• Use the established promenade access points, steps and ramps where available, rather than attempting to descend vulnerable or eroded sections of cliff or defence.
• Parking, shops and the main seafront are close by, but availability can be limited during holidays, events and fine summer weather.
• The beach is generally most accessible around lower stages of the tide; high water can leave little usable sand in places and may push anglers close to the defences.
• Do not obstruct promenades, access ramps, residences, businesses or emergency routes with tackle, vehicles or bivvies.

The principal target is codling in the colder months, with the wider fishery following the familiar seasonal pattern of the Yorkshire and Holderness shoreline. Smaller species can keep rods active when cod are absent, particularly after dark.

• Autumn to early spring: codling, whiting, flounder and dab are the core possibilities; occasional larger cod may appear in the right rough-water conditions.
• Summer and early autumn: bass, flounder, dab, small rays, smooth-hound and dogfish are possible, although catches vary greatly with sea temperature, bait availability and local conditions.
• Year-round or intermittent visitors can include pouting, rockling and other small coastal species around structure and mixed patches of ground.
• Species presence is never guaranteed: this is an exposed North Sea beach, and the quality of fishing is strongly weather-led.

A straightforward beach-casting approach is effective, but it pays to carry enough lead and terminal variations for a changing tide and shifting sand. Fish close-in as well as at range, because feeding fish often work the coloured water and troughs within easy casting distance.

• For codling, use a clipped pulley, pennel pulley or other robust bait presentation with appropriately strong mono or fluorocarbon hooklengths; fresh or well-salted crab, lugworm, ragworm, squid, mussel and fish baits all have a place.
• For whiting and dabs, use smaller-hook multi-bait rigs or two-hook clipped rigs with worm, squid strips, mackerel strip or cocktail baits.
• For bass in warmer water, fish a single bait close to a gutter, edge of coloured water or alongside a feature; ragworm, peeler crab and lugworm are dependable natural choices.
• Carry a range of breakout leads. The pull can be substantial, and a grip lead that holds during one stage of tide may not hold later.
• Avoid placing rigs immediately tight to groynes or hard defences unless you accept tackle losses; cast into the adjacent sand and work the feature rather than trying to fish through it.

Withernsea usually responds best to movement and colour in the sea rather than to one universally perfect tide. A moderate to rough onshore sea can bring the beach alive for codling and other feeding fish, but conditions can become unfishable or unsafe when the weather is excessive.

• The flood tide and the period around high water are often productive, especially where fish move close beneath the defended frontage, but fish can be caught throughout a tide if there is a usable gutter or coloured water.
• A building northerly or north-easterly sea may improve winter codling prospects by colouring the water; allow the sea to become fishable rather than trying to fish through dangerous surf.
• In calmer summer conditions, evening, darkness, dawn and a little tidal movement are often more useful than a bright, flat daytime session.
• Examine the beach at low water if possible: look for deeper runnels, scoured channels beside structures, depressions and changes from clean sand to rougher ground.
• Strong winds, surf and tide can alter the beach rapidly, so yesterday's productive gully may no longer be present.

The developed seafront gives Withernsea better support and easier approach than many open beaches, but it remains an exposed coastal mark with hard sea defences, a fast-rising tide and potentially severe weather. Treat it as a serious North Sea shore venue, particularly in darkness or rough water.

• Check tide times, weather and sea state before setting out, and keep a clear retreat route to the promenade; do not allow a rising tide to cut off your exit.
• Keep well back from breaking waves and avoid fishing directly beneath unstable edges, damaged defences or areas affected by erosion.
• Groynes, wet concrete, algae, rocks and sloping access points can be extremely slippery. A headtorch, suitable footwear and a flotation aid are sensible for night or rough-weather fishing.
• Do not wade in rough water or near groynes: wave surge and lateral currents can be powerful, while the seabed can shelf unexpectedly.
• Promenade-level viewing and some access points may suit anglers with limited mobility, but fishing access to the actual sand, the gradient, steps and tide-dependent beach width may be restrictive. Inspect the chosen entrance in person before planning an accessible session.
• Fish with a companion where possible and carry a charged phone; call 999 and ask for the Coastguard in a coastal emergency.

Withernsea is a working seaside town, so everyday supplies and services are close to the fishing area. This is useful for a short session, though anglers should not assume every seasonal facility will be open late at night or outside the holiday period.

• Shops, food outlets, public conveniences and other town amenities are generally available around the seafront and centre, subject to opening hours and seasonal operation.
• Public parking is available in the town and near the seafront, but always check the posted terms, payment requirements, height restrictions and overnight rules.
• The promenade provides a convenient place to organise gear, but keep rods, tripods, bait and casting activity clear of pedestrians.
• Take all litter, line, bait packaging and discarded tackle home; the beach is heavily used by residents, visitors and wildlife.

The most successful approach at Withernsea is to treat the frontage as a series of small marks rather than one uniform beach. A short walk and careful observation can be more valuable than an extra thirty yards on the cast.

• Arrive early enough to watch the water and identify a safe casting lane away from walkers, dogs, swimmers and the ends of groynes.
• In coloured winter water, do not overlook a short cast into the nearest deeper-looking trough; codling and whiting can feed surprisingly close.
• Fresh bait matters on this coast. Peeler crab is a standout when available and appropriate, while lugworm, ragworm and squid cocktails are reliable alternatives.
• For a night session, use only as much lighting as necessary, mark tripod legs and tackle clearly, and maintain awareness of the rising tide.
• Speak to local tackle shops for current reports on bait, beach access, storm damage and any temporary restrictions; Holderness conditions can change quickly.

Sea angling is not known to be universally prohibited at Withernsea Beach, but access and fishing may be constrained by local safety measures, beach management, events or seasonal bathing activity. Follow all signs at the point of entry and move on if instructed by authorised staff.

• Check East Riding of Yorkshire Council notices, seafront signage and any temporary closure information before fishing, especially after storms or during organised events.
• Keep clear of designated swimming, supervised bathing and watersports areas, and never cast where members of the public could enter the casting zone.
• Sea anglers in England do not normally need a rod licence for recreational sea fishing, but fisheries byelaws, protected-species rules, minimum sizes, catch limits and species-specific measures can apply.
• Bass and other regulated species can be subject to changing national or regional restrictions. Check current official Marine Management Organisation, Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority and government guidance before retaining fish.
• Return undersize, protected or unwanted fish carefully, and do not collect bait, shellfish or other marine life where notices, byelaws or private rights prohibit it.
