Out Newton

Out Newton is a relatively quiet Holderness Coast beach mark south of Hornsea, fished from the open sand and mixed rough ground beneath rapidly eroding clay cliffs. It is primarily a seasonal surf-fishing venue: best known for autumn and winter codling opportunities, with useful flatfish, whiting and occasional summer species when conditions suit.

• The character of the ground can change markedly after northerly seas; sandbanks, gullies, clay scars and loose rock are not permanent features.
• It suits anglers able to walk, read a beach and adapt rigs to changing sea and tide conditions.
• The mark is generally more productive when there is some colour and movement in the water than during prolonged clear, flat conditions.
• It is not a guaranteed easy-access promenade venue, and the quality of the fishing is closely tied to weather, sea state and recent beach movement.

Out Newton lies on the East Riding shoreline between the larger coastal settlements, with access normally approached via the minor roads serving the hamlet and coast. The final route to the fishing ground can involve uneven paths, soft ground and a walk along the beach, so travelling light is sensible.

• Use only legitimate public access routes and any designated roadside or parking areas; do not obstruct lanes, farm entrances, field gateways or emergency access.
• The beach is reached below low, soft boulder-clay cliffs in places, and access points can deteriorate or disappear after erosion and storms.
• Check the route on arrival rather than relying on old reports: cliff-top paths, steps and beach exits are subject to change.
• A beach trolley may be impractical on soft sand, shingle patches or uneven cliff access; a rucksack and compact tackle are often easier.
• Allow enough time to walk back before darkness, particularly if the chosen exit is close to the high-water line or beneath cliffs.

The main attraction is codling during the colder part of the year, particularly when a moderate sea has stirred the Holderness water. Fishing can also produce the usual East Yorkshire surf species, although catches vary considerably with season and ground.

• Codling are the headline target from autumn into winter, with the better chance often coming in coloured water and around flood tide or after dark.
• Whiting can provide steady sport on autumn and winter nights, especially over cleaner sandier stretches.
• Flounder and dab are realistic targets over sandy ground; flounder are often worth pursuing in the calmer and transitional parts of the season.
• Bass may show in warmer months, particularly where shallow surf, gullies and mixed ground provide feeding water, but they are far from dependable.
• Dogfish, small rays and occasional other mixed-ground species are possible in suitable summer or early-autumn conditions, depending on the exact seabed present.
• Small coalies, pouting and other nuisance fish may be encountered near rougher patches, while the occasional larger cod is possible in a proper winter sea.

A robust surf approach is the sensible starting point at Out Newton, but tackle should be matched to the amount of weed, surf and rough ground actually present. Carry a selection of rigs rather than assuming the beach will fish the same way from one visit to the next.

• For codling, use a clipped pennel or single-hook pulley-style rig with a strong trace and enough lead to hold bottom in the tide and surf.
• Fresh or well-presented lugworm, ragworm, crab and squid combinations are standard cod baits; a bulky, securely bound bait is useful when small fish or crabs are active.
• Fish baits such as mackerel or bluey can be worthwhile in coloured water, but can also attract dogfish and reduce bait durability in a heavy wash.
• For whiting, dab and flounder, a lighter two-hook flapper or clipped rig carrying worm, squid strip or small mixed baits can outfish a heavy cod presentation on cleaner ground.
• Use breakout leads where necessary, but retrieve steadily and avoid dragging a fixed weight through suspected clay, rock or debris.
• Long casting can help at times, yet fish are often close in the surf or along the first gully; start by covering several distances rather than casting blindly to the horizon.
• A headtorch, spare batteries, bait elastic, a landing cloth and a long-handled disgorger are particularly useful for evening sessions.

The beach commonly responds best to a building or recently stirred sea, especially when a northerly to north-easterly influence has put colour into the water without making the shore unsafe. Tide height and beach profile matter: the fishable water may be close in on one tide and beyond an awkward shallow bank on another.

• Flooding water is often a productive period for codling and whiting, with the last part of the flood and early ebb worth particular attention where access permits.
• Low water can reveal gutters, clay patches, rock, shell, snags and the safest route across the beach; use daylight reconnaissance if possible.
• Calm, clear conditions can favour flatfish and more delicate presentations, while a moderate coloured sea is usually more encouraging for codling.
• Very large seas, strong onshore winds and heavy suspended weed can make fishing ineffective or dangerous; do not treat rough conditions as automatically 'good cod weather'.
• Expect strong lateral sweep on some tides. Increase lead weight or move to more sheltered/cleaner ground rather than repeatedly casting into an uncontrollable drag.
• Night fishing can be productive, but only when the route, tide and weather have been assessed beforehand.

The defining hazard at Out Newton is cliff erosion. The Holderness cliffs are unstable and can collapse without warning, while the beach can become cut off or difficult to leave as the tide rises.

• Never fish beneath the cliff face, rest tackle against it, shelter under overhangs or linger at the base of freshly fallen material; keep well clear of the cliffs at all times.
• Check tide times, weather forecast and sea-state forecast before setting out, and maintain a generous margin for returning to your exit point.
• Avoid the mark in severe onshore weather, during cliff-fall conditions, or if waves are reaching the base of the access route.
• Clay, wet rock and weed-covered patches can be extremely slippery; wear supportive boots or suitable waders, and do not enter the sea in chest waders in a strong surf.
• Mobile signal and lighting should not be assumed. Tell someone where you are going, fish with a companion when possible, and carry a charged phone and headtorch.
• The terrain, beach walk and lack of level hard-standing access make this a difficult mark for anglers with limited mobility.

Out Newton is a rural, undeveloped fishing location rather than a serviced resort beach. Anglers should arrive self-sufficient and plan to use shops, fuel, toilets and food facilities in surrounding towns or villages before travelling to the coast.

• Do not assume there are public toilets, drinking water, tackle supplies, bins or sheltered seating at the access point.
• Take all litter, discarded line, bait packaging and fish waste home; cliff-top and beach litter is hazardous to wildlife, livestock and other beach users.
• Parking provision can be limited and informal, so park considerately and only where it is clearly lawful and safe.
• There may be no reliable lighting after dark, including on the route back from the beach.

The most successful approach at Out Newton is to treat it as a changing natural beach rather than a fixed peg. A short daylight inspection can be more valuable than arriving with a rigid plan based on an old catch report.

• Walk the intended stretch at low or falling water where safe, noting gullies, deeper runnels, firmer sand and any exposed clay or rocky snags.
• Choose a position with enough dry beach behind you for the predicted flood, not simply the closest point to the water on arrival.
• If weed becomes unmanageable, shorten the session, move to a cleaner area if safe, or use a more streamlined bait and rig; forcing the issue usually leads to lost tackle.
• Keep rigs and bait choices simple at first: one rod with a larger cod bait and one with a smaller worm-based bait can quickly show what is feeding.
• Respect local residents, walkers and neighbouring anglers. Keep casts clear of public areas and avoid bright lights shining towards houses or other fishers.
• Photograph and release unwanted fish carefully, and retain only fish you can use within current rules and any applicable minimum-size requirements.

There is no general indication that sea angling at the beach is universally prohibited, but access arrangements and local restrictions can change. Responsibility for lawful access, parking, catch limits and any protected-species requirements remains with the angler.

• Check current signs at the approach, parking area and beach access for closures, erosion warnings, private-land restrictions, dog controls or temporary works.
• Do not cross private farmland, climb fences or create new paths to the shore; use recognised public routes and respect land management operations.
• Check current national and local rules before retaining fish, including any minimum conservation reference sizes, bass restrictions, shellfish rules and protected-species provisions.
• If fishing from any area that appears privately managed or temporarily restricted, obtain the relevant permission rather than assuming customary access applies.
• Conditions on this coast change rapidly after storms; a route mentioned in older guides may no longer be safe, open or lawful to use.
