Kilnsea Clays

Kilnsea Clays is a classic Holderness rough-ground beach mark near the southern end of the East Yorkshire coast, valued chiefly for autumn and winter codling fishing. It is a changing, erosion-prone shoreline rather than an easy, manicured beach, and it rewards anglers who choose a safe tide and can cope with heavy, snaggy ground.

The mark is generally referred to as the clay-backed shore around Kilnsea, close to the Spurn/Kilnsea area and the Humber approaches. Exact access points and the amount of fishable beach can alter markedly after storms and cliff falls, so treat local signage and conditions on the day as decisive.

The main attraction is codling when there is coloured water and a proper sea running, but the mark can produce a useful range of North Sea beach species through the year.

This is normally fished as a rough-ground beach rather than a long-range clean-sand venue. Tackle should be selected for holding bottom and retrieving through clay, stones and weed rather than simply for maximum casting distance.

A moderate to building sea is often the productive condition here, particularly when it colours the water without making the beach unsafe to fish. Tidal state matters as much as the weather because the beach profile, gullies and safe exit routes can change quickly.

Kilnsea Clays demands caution: the low clay cliffs and foreshore are actively eroding, the beach can be cut off by the tide, and the coast is exposed to strong wind, surf and poor visibility. It is not a good choice for anglers with limited mobility or for anyone unfamiliar with reading a tide and coastal conditions.

Do not assume that there are facilities at the fishing spot itself. Use established parking and public facilities in the wider Kilnsea/Spurn area where available, and arrive prepared to be self-sufficient on the beach.

The venue is at its best when approached as a mobile, observation-led session rather than a fixed peg. A short walk along the available shore at low water can reveal firmer patches, gullies and cleaner channels, but only do this with a clear plan to return before the tide removes your route.

There is no blanket prohibition assumed here, but this is a sensitive and constantly changing coastal area close to designated wildlife land and managed access routes. Check current local signs, landowner restrictions, Yorkshire Wildlife Trust/Spurn access information where relevant, and the applicable Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority rules before fishing.
