Spurn Bight

Spurn Bight is the broad, sheltered Humber-side curve of the Spurn peninsula, rather than an open North Sea surf beach. It is a characterful estuary mark where fish movements, the state of tide and safe access matter far more than simply casting as far as possible.

• It can produce good mixed estuary fishing, especially for anglers prepared to fish a moving tide and vary bait.
• The ground and channels change regularly after weather, flooding and tidal movement; a productive gully on one visit may be filled or shifted on the next.
• It is best treated as a remote, tide-led shore mark within the wider Spurn landscape, not as an easy-access beach venue.

The Bight lies on the Humber Estuary side of Spurn, around the recurved southern end of the peninsula near Kilnsea and Spurn Point. Access arrangements at Spurn can change at short notice because the peninsula is dynamic, exposed and managed as a nature reserve.

• Reach the area via Kilnsea and use only the public routes, designated parking and any authorised access route that is open on the day.
• Do not assume that a vehicle can be taken to the fishing area: the old route towards the Point is vulnerable to erosion and flooding, and access may involve a substantial walk.
• Check the current Spurn reserve visitor information before travelling, particularly after high seas, storms or prolonged rain.
• Avoid crossing dunes, saltmarsh or signed conservation ground to create a shortcut; apart from disturbance concerns, these areas can be unstable and difficult to retreat from on a rising tide.
• The most useful fishing water is usually identified by visible current lines, colour changes and deeper-looking channels, rather than by a fixed peg.

Spurn Bight is principally an estuary and Humber-mouth mark, so flounder and other tide-following fish are among its most reliable prospects. The exact mix varies markedly with season, freshwater flow, water clarity and the amount of bait fish in the estuary.

• Flounder are a key target, particularly through the cooler months and around periods when they are moving within the estuary.
• Bass can show in warmer water, with better chances around moving water, bait concentrations and suitable crab- or worm-fed ground.
• Eels, whiting, codling and occasional bigger cod may feature in the colder part of the year, although catches are never guaranteed.
• Smooth-hound, dogfish, rays and thornback rays can occur when summer conditions and bait movement are favourable, especially nearer the estuary mouth.
• Small flatfish, pouting and other mixed estuary species may fill quieter sessions; return undersized and unwanted fish carefully.

Simple, robust estuary tactics are usually more effective here than extreme-distance casting. Presenting a bait in a likely channel and keeping it fishing as the tide builds is often the priority.

• Use a reliable fixed-spool or multiplier set-up capable of holding bottom in a powerful tidal flow, with a grip lead selected for the actual conditions.
• A clipped-down pulley, pennel or two-hook flapper can all work, but keep rigs sensible and minimise loose components that can snag debris or tangle in current.
• For flounder and general mixed fishing, try ragworm, lugworm, maddies, small crab baits or cocktails; a modest bait often out-fishes an oversized offering.
• For codling, whiting and larger rays, fish substantial worm, squid, fish-strip or crab baits on stronger hooks and traces appropriate to the target species.
• Cast across or slightly uptide of an identified run where practical, then watch whether the lead is holding and recast if the line is being swept into unsafe or unfishable water.
• Travel light enough to move if conditions change, but take a proper rod rest, headtorch and spare terminal tackle; the tide can make a previously comfortable position unusable quickly.

The Humber has large volumes of fast-moving water, and the Bight is heavily influenced by tidal streams, river discharge and weather-driven colour. A session planned around a safe, fishable tide is far more worthwhile than an arbitrary arrival time.

• Building water and the period around high water are often productive, as fish can move closer over the flooding margins and into accessible channels.
• The ebb can be very strong and may carry weed, silt and floating debris; in some conditions it is better to stop fishing than continually force tackle to hold.
• A moderate onshore or cross-shore breeze may add colour and encourage fish, but strong winds can make casting, footing and a safe retreat difficult.
• Clear, settled conditions can favour lighter, more discreet presentations for flatfish, while coloured water often suits worm, crab and scent-rich baits.
• Obtain a current Humber tide prediction and allow a generous margin for local surge, wind and the time needed to walk back; do not use a published tide time as a substitute for watching the water.

This is a remote and potentially serious tidal environment, with soft estuary sediments, quick changes in weather and limited immediate help. It is unsuitable for anyone who cannot safely manage an uneven walk, soft ground and a prompt retreat from rising water.

• Never fish alone if possible, and tell someone your intended location, route and return time.
• Wear suitable boots, warm waterproof layers and a buoyancy aid where there is any realistic risk of entering deep or fast water.
• Do not step onto mudflats, attempt to cross creeks or wade unknown channels: estuarine mud can be deep and channels can scour unexpectedly.
• Keep well clear of the water's edge in rough weather, and do not fish from damaged defences, groynes, structures or any area carrying warning signs.
• Carry a charged phone, headtorch, first-aid kit and an offline route plan, but do not rely on phone signal being consistently available.
• Night fishing demands extra caution: arrive and assess the ground in daylight, retain a clear exit route and leave before conditions make that route uncertain.

Facilities are limited at the mark itself, and anglers should arrive self-sufficient rather than expecting a tackle shop, shelter, toilet or refreshment point beside the fishing water. Services in the wider Kilnsea and Spurn visitor area can have seasonal or weather-related opening changes.

• Use designated parking only and check current parking, visitor-centre and toilet availability before setting out.
• Take sufficient drinking water, food, spare clothing and a means of keeping litter and bait packaging contained.
• There may be no practical shelter once on the shore, so do not plan to wait out severe weather at the mark.
• Buy bait and essential supplies before travelling to the peninsula; availability locally should not be assumed.
• Take all litter, discarded line and bait remnants home, as these are especially hazardous to birds and other wildlife in this important reserve.

The strongest local approach is to fish the water in front of you rather than chasing an old report of a fixed hotspot. Spend time reading the current, watching other safe users of the shore and adjusting to what the tide is actually doing.

• Arrive well before the intended fishing period to identify firm standing ground, current seams and a safe route back.
• Start with one bait aimed at flatfish or general estuary species and one more selective bait if conditions suggest bass, codling or rays.
• Fresh, well-presented worm and crab baits are usually more valuable than elaborate rigs in coloured Humber water.
• Keep casts controlled: a shorter cast into a near channel can be more productive and far safer to manage than a long cast into the main run.
• Check terminal tackle frequently for weed, silt and abrasion, especially after a strong ebb.
• Treat wildlife as part of the experience: give birds, seals and resting areas plenty of room and avoid shining lights directly at them at night.

Spurn is within a highly protected and actively managed coastal landscape, and access restrictions can apply even where shore angling is not subject to a blanket ban. No blanket official prohibition on fishing at "Spurn Bight" should be assumed from this description, so anglers must check the current position on arrival.

• Follow all signs, reserve staff instructions, temporary closures and any seasonal wildlife-protection measures without argument.
• Use only areas where public access and fishing are permitted; do not enter fenced, signed, operational, private or conservation-sensitive ground.
• Check the current rules issued by the Spurn reserve manager, the relevant landowner and harbour or navigation authority before travelling, as access and permitted activities may change.
• National sea-fisheries rules still apply, including current minimum sizes, catch limits, protected-species requirements and any restrictions affecting species such as bass; consult official government and local fisheries sources for the up-to-date rules.
• Do not remove bait by digging, turn stones, collect wildlife or disturb nesting and roosting birds unless this is expressly permitted at the location.
• Dispose of line and hooks responsibly and release protected, undersized or unwanted fish with the least possible handling.
