Dimlington

Dimlington is a productive but exposed Holderness beach mark, best known locally for winter codling fishing when the North Sea is carrying colour. It is a natural, shifting coastline rather than a neatly managed promenade venue, so conditions and access deserve as much attention as tackle.

• The mark covers the beach and sands off the village of Dimlington, on the open East Riding coast between Withernsea and Easington.
• It has a strong reputation as a cold-water cod and codling venue, while still offering useful summer and autumn fishing when the sea and weather suit.
• Expect a mobile mix of sand, shingle, clay-derived rough ground and gullies; the exact fishing water can alter after every sizeable sea.
• It is not a comfortable fair-weather, high-tide-only resort beach mark: wind, surf, erosion and long walks can all be part of the session.

Dimlington lies on the rapidly eroding Holderness shoreline, where high boulder-clay cliffs back a broad, open beach. Access is generally made from the village/cliff-top side, but erosion can alter paths, steps, parking arrangements and even the shape of the beach without much warning.

• Approach via the local village roads and use only clearly permitted parking; avoid blocking gateways, farm accesses, private drives or emergency routes.
• The descent to the beach can be steep, uneven, muddy or damaged after storms. Check the route before carrying a full fishing load down.
• At lower states of tide, the beach can open out considerably and reveal channels, scarred clay, shingle strips and deeper-looking water; these features are worth noting for the flood.
• Do not assume an old access point shown in a fishing report, video or map is still usable. The Holderness cliffs retreat continually and routes can be closed or unsafe.
• The coast is isolated compared with nearby resort frontage, so plan transport, timing and a safe return route before fishing.

Codling and cod are the headline fish at Dimlington, particularly through the colder months and after suitable rough weather. The beach also supports the usual Humber-to-Holderness mix of flatfish, whiting and seasonal visitors.

• Codling and the occasional larger cod are the principal autumn and winter targets, especially in coloured water over a stirred-up seabed.
• Whiting can provide reliable night fishing in autumn and winter, often alongside smaller codling.
• Dab, flounder and plaice may show over cleaner sand, with dabs often a useful fallback when the cod fishing is quiet.
• Bass are possible in the warmer months, especially where there is moving, slightly coloured water and food is being worked loose close in.
• Smoothhound, rays and other summer species can occur along this coast, but they should be treated as conditional opportunities rather than guaranteed Dimlington targets.
• Small fish, crabs and dogfish may be present depending on season and sea state; carry bait and rig options rather than relying on a single-species plan.

A conventional beachcasting approach is appropriate, but the best distance is often the one that reaches a defined nearshore gutter rather than the furthest possible cast. Use robust terminal tackle when the sea is running, while keeping rigs simple enough to fish cleanly over changing ground.

• A 12–15 ft beachcaster, fixed-spool or multiplier reel, and a shockleader are typical tools for casting heavier sinkers safely in wind and surf.
• Use a grip lead heavy enough to hold station in the prevailing tide and wave drag; change lead weight or style if the bait is continually dragged into debris or across the bottom.
• For codling, a clipped single-hook rig or pennel-style presentation carrying worm and crab-based baits is a sound starting point. Lugworm, ragworm, peeler crab, mussel and squid combinations are all established cold-water options.
• Keep hooks and bait presentation proportionate to the target: larger, well-secured baits for codling; smaller worm baits and lighter traces where dabs, whiting or other flatfish are the aim.
• A two-hook flapper or flowing rig can be effective over cleaner sand for whiting and flatfish, but reduce hooks if weed, surf or rough ground causes tangles.
• For bass, fish fresh worm, crab or a suitably worked lure only where conditions permit, and concentrate on gutters, seams and water tight to the beach rather than casting blindly over them.
• Carry spare rigs, lead clips and enough leads: the bottom can be variable and a blow may fill the line with weed.

The most productive sessions commonly coincide with a building or easing sea that has put colour into the water, particularly during the autumn and winter cod season. However, the same conditions that improve fishing can make Dimlington hazardous, so fishability must come before expectation.

• The flood tide and the period around high water are often favoured because fish can move close over the shallower ground, but the worthwhile window varies with beach shape and sea state.
• A moderate sea with coloured water can be excellent for codling; a very large easterly or northerly blow can make casting, holding bottom and safe access impossible.
• On calmer days, inspect the low-water beach for darker gullies, shingle tongues, clay patches and changes in wave pattern, then fish those features as the tide covers them.
• Strong onshore winds, heavy surf and floating weed can quickly turn a planned session into an unsafe or unproductive one.
• Avoid being trapped against the cliff by a rising tide. Check the actual tide forecast, allow for wave run-up, and leave well before your escape route is narrowed.
• Night sessions can be productive for codling and whiting, but daylight reconnaissance is strongly preferable if you do not already know the access and beach.

Dimlington demands sensible coastal safety practice. The unstable cliffs and tidal beach are the principal hazards, and neither should be treated casually for the sake of reaching a casting position.

• Never fish beneath, climb on, or shelter under the boulder-clay cliffs: falls and slumps can occur without warning, particularly after rain, frost or rough seas.
• Keep a substantial distance from the cliff base and do not leave tackle or belongings where a retreat could be delayed.
• Check tide times, weather, wind direction, wave forecast and access conditions before leaving home; abandon the trip if the route or sea looks unsafe.
• Wear grippy footwear, warm waterproof layers and a headtorch for late sessions. A flotation aid is worth serious consideration in surf or when fishing alone.
• Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return, keep a charged phone in a waterproof pouch, and use 999 and ask for the Coastguard in an emergency.
• The mark is not well suited to anglers with restricted mobility, heavy barrows or very young children because access can involve uneven ground, a steep descent and soft sand.
• Keep clear of any operational coastal infrastructure, barriers, warning signs and work areas.

Facilities at Dimlington itself are limited, and anglers should regard it as a self-sufficient beach session rather than a serviced fishing venue. The larger nearby settlements are more useful for supplies, fuel and alternative amenities.

• Bring drinking water, food, a first-aid kit, spare clothing and all bait and tackle required for the session.
• Do not rely on toilets, lighting, tackle shops, sheltered seating or food outlets being available at the access point.
• Parking capacity and restrictions can be limited or change with coastal works and erosion; observe signs on the day and park considerately.
• Take all litter, discarded line, bait packaging and damaged rigs home. Lost line on this coast is a danger to wildlife and other beach users.
• If you need last-minute supplies or a more sheltered fallback location, arrange them before travelling rather than assuming the village can provide them.

The most consistent Dimlington anglers read the beach rather than fishing a remembered casting distance. A few minutes spent watching the surf and walking the safe, exposed sand can be more valuable than an extra hour with a bait in featureless water.

• Arrive in daylight when possible and look for gullies, darker water, wave breaks, foam lines and seams where the current is carrying food.
• Fish one bait in a likely close-in feature before committing both rods to long-range casting; codling can feed surprisingly close to the edge in coloured water.
• If one area produces bites, do not be afraid to shorten casts or move a modest distance along the beach, provided the tide and cliff safety allow it.
• Fresh, properly secured bait matters in the surf. Use bait elastic where needed and check frequently for weed, stripped baits and line damage.
• Match expectations to the weather: a well-timed moderate coloured sea is generally more useful than simply choosing the largest tide or the windiest forecast.
• Treat other beach users, local residents and landowners courteously. Quiet arrivals, tidy parking and leaving no trace help preserve access to these small coastal marks.

There is no confirmed blanket prohibition on recreational sea angling at Dimlington, but access and fishing can be affected by local land management, erosion work, temporary safety closures and nearby operational infrastructure. Check current signs at the approach and comply with any instruction from landowners, contractors, harbour/coastal authorities or emergency services.

• In England, ordinary recreational sea fishing does not normally require a rod licence, but different rules can apply to migratory salmonids and freshwater-connected fishing; check the relevant official guidance if there is any doubt.
• Observe current national and local rules on minimum conservation reference sizes, catch limits, protected species and closed seasons. These rules can change, so verify them through official fisheries sources before retaining fish.
