Waxholme Beach

5.1· Beach · East Riding of Yorkshire

A quiet, open Holderness coast beach of sand, shingle and occasional clay patches, fished by walking from local roadside/parking access and choosing ground clear of the groynes and erosion debris. It is mainly a distance-fishing venue, with best results around tide changes and coloured water; autumn and winter favour cod and whiting, while summer brings flatfish, bass and the chance of rays.

Why this rating?

  • Small swell and lighter wind: relatively calm.
  • Gentle 11mph SW breeze puts a little life on the water without heavy drift.
  • High water at 02:47 and 15:46 — the last of the flood and first of the ebb are usually the prime spells.
  • Low rain risk (2%) — should stay comfortable all session.

Waxholme is a mobile, sea-state-led Holderness beach best approached as a bait-and-wait venue. It is most worthwhile when the beach has formed fishable gutters or darker channels and the North Sea has enough colour and movement to bring fish into the surf, without becoming too rough to fish safely. Autumn and winter offer the stronger codling and whiting opportunity; cleaner spring and summer conditions shift the emphasis towards flatfish, bass and the occasional ray.

  • Fish the gutter before chasing maximum distance.
  • Time winter codling for coloured, manageable water.
  • Use the flood and early ebb to cover Waxholme’s best windows.
  • Know when heavy surf, weed or erosion risk makes the call simple.
