Cleethorpes North Promenade

Cleethorpes North Promenade is a convenient Humber-estuary shore mark where anglers fish from the beach beside the sea wall and promenade, rather than needing to negotiate mudflats or rough ground. It is principally a tide-led venue: catches can be very worthwhile when fish are running, but the vast, shallow beach can feel lifeless at the wrong stage of tide.

The mark covers the northern stretch of Cleethorpes seafront, away from the busiest central tourist frontage, with access generally gained from promenade entrances, seafront parking and public paths. It is an easy venue to reach, but anglers should choose a clear area well away from pedestrians, beach users and any signed recreation zones.

Expect typical Humber and Lincolnshire sandy-shore species, with the mix changing markedly through the year and with water clarity. Smaller fish are often the staple, while better fish tend to coincide with seasonal runs, coloured water and stronger tides.

Long-range casting can help on this shallow coast, but it is not always essential: fish frequently feed surprisingly close in as the tide covers the beach. A simple, well-presented bait fished in a gully or on the advancing tide will often outfish an unnecessarily heavy, distant cast.

This is a strongly tidal, shallow-water venue, so planning around tide height and the state of the flood is more important than simply turning up for a fixed number of hours. The most productive water is often around high tide, particularly where the flood reaches the sea-wall edge or fills visible channels in the sand.

The promenade itself is relatively level and can make approach and set-up easier than at many natural Lincolnshire shore marks, although the fishing beach is soft, uneven and changes after weather and tides. Treat the Humber as a serious tidal environment: channels, wet sand and a fast-rising tide can cut off an unwary angler.

Being on the Cleethorpes seafront, this mark is better served than remote coastal beaches for parking, shops, food and public amenities, though availability varies by season and exact position. Carry what you need onto the beach, as facilities can be some distance from the particular stretch of sand you choose.

A reconnaissance visit at low water is particularly useful here, because it reveals the gullies, depressions and firmer routes that will be hidden once the tide floods. Keep mobile if practical and fish the features rather than casting blindly across an apparently flat expanse.

There is no reason to treat the whole North Promenade as permanently closed to angling, but local controls, seasonal beach-management rules and temporary safety restrictions can apply to particular sections. Check current North East Lincolnshire Council notices and every sign at your chosen access point before setting up, especially during the busy bathing season.

• Do not fish where signs prohibit angling, where a temporary event exclusion is in force, or where you would cast across a bathing or watersports area.
• Give promenade users, dogs, cyclists and beachgoers ample room; use a safe casting area and keep rods, line and terminal tackle out of public paths.
• Sea angling ordinarily does not require an Environment Agency rod licence, but different rules apply to freshwater and migratory-salmon fishing; check official guidance if your plans extend beyond ordinary sea fishing.
• Observe national minimum-size, catch-limit and protected-species rules, and return undersized, unwanted and protected fish carefully.
• Take all line, hooks, bait packaging and litter home, and check current local byelaws or council guidance rather than relying on old reports.
