Sunk Island

5.3· Estuary · East Riding of Yorkshire

Sunk Island is a quiet, exposed Humber estuary shore mark reached via rural lanes and short walks from roadside or public frontage, with much of the surrounding ground being private farmland. Fishing is over soft mud, sand and deeper tidal channels rather than clean beach, producing classic estuary mixed bags; it is best approached around a manageable tide, with local access checked beforehand and no attempt made to cross the mudflats.

Sunk Island is a tide-led Humber estuary mark where the productive water is likely to be the channel influence rather than distance for its own sake. Fish a manageable flood into high water, keep rigs durable and practical for mud, debris and strong flow, and plan the retreat before setting up. It can produce a strong cold-weather mixed bag, while warmer, cleaner spells broaden the chance of bass, plaice, eels and occasional rays.

  • Fish the channel influence, not the mudflats
  • Time the flood and high water for the best all-round chance
  • Match bait and rig to flounder, whiting, codling or summer bass
  • Know when Humber flow and weather make the mark a no-go
