Sunk Island

Sunk Island is a remote Humber-estuary sea-fishing area on the East Riding bank, valued more for its big-tide, estuary fishing than for comfortable all-weather beach angling. It can produce worthwhile mixed catches—particularly in the colder months—but it is a serious tidal venue where local knowledge and sensible timing matter.

• Expect an exposed flood-bank/foreshore setting rather than a conventional resort beach.
• The mark is generally fished for Humber species such as codling, whiting, flounder and other flatfish, with seasonal chances of bass, eels and rays.
• Results can be very tide-, weather- and freshwater-flow dependent; a poor-looking session can turn quickly when the tide begins to move.
• It suits anglers who are self-sufficient, happy to walk, and equipped for mud, wind and low light.

Sunk Island lies on the north bank of the Humber Estuary in East Riding of Yorkshire, in the reclaimed low-lying land between the Humber-side villages and the outer-estuary coast towards Spurn. Anglers normally approach via the local rural road network and then walk to suitable public-accessible sections of flood bank or foreshore.

• Treat the area as working agricultural and flood-defence country: keep gateways, tracks and passing places clear, and do not obstruct farm traffic.
• Access is not uniform along the bank; some tracks, fields, drainage infrastructure and adjacent land are private, so use only clearly lawful access routes and respect signs and gates.
• The walk can be longer and harder than expected, especially after rain or when carrying a full beach-fishing kit.
• A headtorch is essential for dawn, dusk and night fishing, but avoid shining lights towards homes, livestock, road users or other anglers.
• Mobile reception may be variable; tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return.

Sunk Island is principally an estuary mark, so catches reflect salinity, season, water temperature and the strength of the Humber’s flow. Flatfish and winter round fish are the main draw, while summer fishing can offer more variety when cleaner, saltier water reaches the bank.

• Codling can show from autumn into winter, especially after suitable onshore weather and coloured water; larger fish are possible but never guaranteed.
• Whiting are a common cold-water target and can provide reliable night sport when they are present.
• Flounder are a classic Humber species and may feed well over muddy and mixed ground, particularly on a moving tide.
• Bass are possible in the warmer part of the year, mainly when conditions are favourable and baitfish are about.
• Thornback rays and other rays may occur in season, although availability varies greatly between years and tides.
• Eels, small flatfish, poor cod and assorted estuary species can also appear; return undersized fish carefully and minimise handling time.

Fishing is usually centred on presenting fresh, durable bait over estuary mud or mixed ground and keeping it in the feeding zone as the tide builds. Heavy tidal flow can make neat, practical rigs more productive than over-complicated presentations.

• A beachcaster capable of controlling a substantial lead is appropriate; choose lead weight for the actual run of tide, not simply casting distance.
• Two-hook clipped rigs, pulley rigs and simple flowing or flapper-style rigs all have a place, provided they are matched to the amount of debris and the target species.
• Use strong, abrasion-resistant hooklengths and sensible hooks: the Humber can carry weed, timber, rubbish and other snagging hazards.
• Lugworm, ragworm, crab, squid, fish strip, mackerel and shellfish baits can all work; fresh local bait and well-presented cocktails are often worthwhile for codling and rays.
• For flounder, smaller baits and hooks can be effective; a little movement, scent and a bait presented close to the bottom are often more important than extreme range.
• Cast only as far as needed. Fish may feed close in on a flooding tide, while long casts can be difficult to hold in strong water.

The Humber has powerful, fast-changing tides, and the state of tide is central to fishing Sunk Island safely as well as successfully. Many anglers favour a period around the flood and high water, but the best window varies with the exact section of bank, wind direction, river flow and seasonal fish movement.

• Check a current official tide table for the Humber before travelling; do not rely on an old app screenshot, a remembered tide time or timings from another venue.
• Give yourself ample time to leave before rising water, especially if you have walked onto low foreshore or along a narrowing route.
• Strong winds opposing the tidal flow can make the estuary exceptionally rough and uncomfortable, with difficult casting and rapid loss of footing.
• Coloured, stirred water can improve prospects for codling and whiting, while warmer and relatively cleaner summer conditions may favour bass, rays and flatfish.
• Heavy rain and freshwater discharge can alter salinity and colour markedly, changing both fish distribution and the condition of paths and banks.
• Avoid standing close to the water’s edge on a building tide; wash, wake and soft ground can take anglers by surprise.

This is not an easy-access promenade mark. Soft estuary mud, steep or uneven banks, darkness, exposed weather and a rapidly advancing tide make careful planning essential.

• Never walk far onto Humber mudflats unless you have expert local knowledge; mud can be deep, channels can cut off escape, and incoming water can move with alarming speed.
• Fish with a companion where possible, carry a charged phone, and make a firm plan to leave well before your safe route is affected by the tide.
• Wear sturdy waterproof footwear with good grip, warm layers and a flotation aid where conditions or position warrant it; avoid waders in deep, fast tidal water.
• Do not attempt the mark in fog, severe wind, electrical storms or conditions in which you cannot clearly identify your route back.
• Flood-bank paths may be rough, narrow, muddy and inaccessible to wheelchairs or anglers with limited mobility. There are unlikely to be level, purpose-built fishing platforms.
• Keep well clear of drainage outfalls, sluices, erosion edges and any flood-defence works, and do not climb over barriers or enter signed restricted areas.

Sunk Island should be treated as a self-contained rural fishing trip rather than a serviced angling venue. Facilities immediately beside the fishing bank are limited or absent.

• Take all bait, drinking water, food, spare clothing, lighting and tackle you will need for the session.
• Do not expect public toilets, tackle shops, cafés, shelters or reliable litter bins at the mark.
• Park only where it is lawful and safe, without blocking agricultural access, gates, passing places or emergency routes.
• Take every item home, including discarded line, bait packaging and food waste; loose line is particularly dangerous to wildlife on an estuary.
• Use the nearest towns and villages for fuel, supplies and toilets before heading out, rather than assuming services will be available on the bank.

Success at Sunk Island usually comes from matching the session to the tide and keeping the approach simple, safe and mobile. A first visit in daylight, ideally with an angler who knows the local bank, is far more sensible than arriving alone for a first night tide.

• Reconnoitre your chosen access route at low water or in daylight, but do not venture onto soft flats simply to inspect the ground.
• Ask a reputable local tackle shop for recent reports, productive tide stages and any current access issues; Humber marks can change after storms, maintenance work or erosion.
• Carry enough leads, rigs and spare line for losses, but retrieve safely rather than pulling hard from an unstable bank edge.
• Keep rods secure and well back from the edge; strong bites, wind and tidal pull can easily drag unattended tackle.
• Travel light enough to retreat promptly. A long session is not worthwhile if the return becomes difficult in darkness or rising water.
• Photograph and release fish quickly where appropriate, especially rays and larger breeding fish, and avoid placing fish on dry, abrasive ground.

There is no clear basis to state that all fishing at Sunk Island is prohibited, but access and activity can be restricted locally by landownership, flood-defence works, safety controls or temporary notices. The estuary also has important wildlife and navigation interests, so anglers should check the current position before each visit.

• Read and obey all on-site signs, gates, seasonal notices and instructions from landowners, flood-risk authorities, harbour or navigation personnel and authorised officers.
• Do not assume that a road, field track, sea wall or foreshore gives unrestricted permission to park, cross private land, camp, light fires or fish every section.
• Check current national and local rules on minimum sizes, catch limits, protected species and any restrictions on taking shellfish or collecting bait; requirements can change.
• If considering bait digging or collecting shellfish, confirm that it is permitted at the exact location and that no conservation, private-land or local authority restriction applies.
• Return protected, prohibited or undersized catches immediately and carefully, and retain fish only where lawful and genuinely needed.
• Check official flood and weather warnings before travelling, and leave immediately if instructed to do so by authorities or site operators.
