Stone Creek

Stone Creek is a Humber-estuary shore mark in the East Riding, valued more for its tidal-channel fishing than for easy beach casting. It can produce mixed estuary species and, when conditions line up, worthwhile autumn and winter codling fishing, but it is a serious tide-and-mud venue rather than a casual all-weather spot.

• The mark is generally approached as a low-water/working-tide estuary venue, with fish often following the deeper water, gullies and flow rather than sitting close under the bank.
• Expectations should be realistic: catches can be very tide-, weather- and bait-dependent, and a blank is entirely possible even at traditionally productive times.
• Treat the name as an area rather than a guarantee of one fixed peg; bank condition, access arrangements and the position of fish can change markedly along an estuary frontage.

Stone Creek lies on the north bank of the Humber in the East Riding of Yorkshire, in the low-lying farmland and flood-defence country west of Spurn. Access is not as straightforward as at a resort beach, and the final approach may involve field-edge paths, rough tracks or flood-bank walking.

• Do not assume that every lane, track, farm gateway or flood-bank route is public; use lawful public access, obtain permission where required, and avoid blocking agricultural entrances.
• Parking is limited and informal in this part of the estuary. Park only where it is clearly safe and permitted, keep clear of passing places, and do not leave vehicles on soft verges.
• The walk can be uneven, exposed and slippery, particularly after rain or when the flood bank is wet. Travel light enough to manage the return safely.
• Exact fishing positions alter with erosion, drainage works and bank maintenance, so inspect the route in daylight before attempting an evening or night session.

Stone Creek's mixed Humber water can hold both resident estuary fish and seasonal visitors. The stronger prospects are usually dictated by water temperature, freshwater influence, tide size and the amount of coloured water moving through the estuary.

• Autumn and winter: codling, whiting, flounder and occasionally other cold-water estuary species are the usual targets.
• Spring and summer: flounder, eel, bass, school-sized rays and smooth-hound may be possible in suitable conditions, alongside smaller mixed species.
• Flatfish can be a particular attraction, especially where a cleanish patch, gentle crease or softer ground gives them feeding room.
• Bass, rays and smooth-hound are not guaranteed catches here; regard them as seasonal possibilities rather than the basis for every trip.
• Fish vary considerably from year to year in the Humber, so recent local reports are more useful than old catch tales.

A robust estuary approach is normally more effective than ultra-fine beach tactics. The aim is to present a bait securely in moving water while retaining enough sensitivity to spot bites through the tide.

• Use a beachcaster or similar powerful shore rod with a reel carrying sufficient line for a long cast and a demanding tide; fixed-spool or multiplier outfits both work when properly matched.
• A clipped pulley, pulley-dropper or other streamlined two-hook rig is useful where distance and a clean retrieve matter. A simple one-hook flowing or flapper-style arrangement can be effective for flounder and cautious fish when the tide is manageable.
• Carry a range of lead sizes and use only enough weight to hold safely. If the lead repeatedly rolls or drags, step up the weight, change angle, or wait for easier water rather than leaving a line sweeping across the frontage.
• Lugworm, ragworm, crab, squid, mackerel and fish-based cocktail baits all have a place. Worm and crab are sound starting points for mixed fish; larger, well-bound cocktails are often favoured when seeking codling.
• Casts do not always need to be extreme. Try a short line, mid-range water and a longer cast until the productive distance becomes clear, then fish that line accurately.
• Keep hooks sharp and baits tightly secured: estuary flow, crabs and smaller fish can strip a loose bait quickly.

The Humber tide is the defining feature of Stone Creek. Fast flow, deep channels, soft margins and rapidly changing water levels mean that a tide table is essential rather than optional.

• Fish only after checking the official tide times and heights for the relevant Humber location, and allow a generous safety margin around high water; local conditions can differ from a simple prediction.
• Moderate tides are often easier to fish and safer to manage than the biggest springs, though larger tides can move more coloured water and stir feeding activity.
• The flood tide can bring fish close, while the ebb may expose mud and increase the risk of being cut off. Productive periods can occur either side of high water, but safe exit must take priority over bite time.
• Coloured, moving water following a south-westerly or onshore-influenced blow can improve confidence for codling and whiting, whereas prolonged clear, settled conditions can make daytime fishing harder.
• Wind against tide can create a short, awkward chop and make casting, footing and line control much more difficult. Avoid exposed flood-bank sessions in severe weather.

This is not a suitable mark for anglers who cannot comfortably manage uneven ground, a potentially long walk and an exposed estuary environment. Never descend onto soft mud or attempt to recover tackle from the foreshore.

• Mud on Humber margins can be deep and unstable; it can trap boots and can become dangerous very quickly as the tide returns.
• Keep well back from undercut edges, drainage outfalls and eroded sections of bank. Do not fish beneath a crumbling flood-defence face.
• Wear a buoyancy aid if you are close to tidal water, use footwear with secure grip, and take a headtorch plus a spare light for dusk or night fishing.
• Fish with a companion where possible, tell somebody your intended access point and return time, and keep a charged phone in a waterproof pouch.
• Check wind, rain, visibility and tide before setting out. Fog and darkness can make navigation across the surrounding flat farmland surprisingly difficult.
• There are no reliable step-free, paved or close-to-car fishing arrangements to assume here; anglers with limited mobility should choose a more accessible Humber or coastal venue.

Stone Creek is essentially a rural, self-sufficient fishing mark with little or no on-site angling infrastructure. Take everything needed for the session and leave the place cleaner than you found it.

• Do not rely on finding toilets, tackle supplies, food outlets, lighting, bins or shelter at the mark.
• Bring drinking water, bait, spare rigs, a first-aid kit, a landing tool if appropriate, and bags for all litter and discarded line.
• Mobile signal can be variable on low ground and behind banks, so download tide and route information before leaving home.
• Use a proper rubbish bag for bait packaging, line trimmings and food waste; discarded line is especially hazardous to wildlife in estuary habitat.

Success at Stone Creek usually comes from preparation and observation rather than simply casting as far as possible. Arrive early enough to read the water, find a safe platform and watch how the tide is moving before committing to a spot.

• Look for changes in colour, smoother water beside faster flow, bends in the current and visible gullies; these features often matter more than the exact named mark.
• Begin with fresh, neatly presented bait and check it regularly, particularly when crabs are active or the flow is strong.
• If fishing for codling in the colder months, a larger bait on a strong single-hook presentation is often a sensible first option; scale down only when bites indicate smaller fish.
• For flounder and mixed fish, do not neglect shorter casts and less turbulent water, especially around a gentler stage of tide.
• Keep rods and tackle above any likely splash zone and plan the retreat before darkness. Packing up ten minutes early is better than being forced off by rising water.
• Respect nearby residents, farms, livestock and wildlife. Quiet arrivals, closed gates where found closed, and careful parking help preserve access.

Fishing is not known to be universally prohibited simply by the name Stone Creek, but access rights and local restrictions must not be assumed. The Humber frontage includes flood defences, drainage assets, private farmland and sensitive habitats, any of which may have site-specific controls or temporary closures.

• Check for current signs at the actual access point and comply with landowner, Environment Agency, council, harbour or conservation instructions. A sign, locked gate or works notice takes precedence over old fishing information.
• Do not cross private land unless there is a public right of way, open-access provision or express permission. Keep off crops, do not disturb livestock, and avoid active drainage or engineering works.
• Sea angling in England does not normally require an Environment Agency rod licence, but fishing freshwater or non-tidal sections of drains/creeks can be different. Confirm the status of the water before fishing it.
• Observe current national and local rules on species, minimum conservation reference sizes, bass restrictions, protected species and any Humber-specific byelaws. These rules can change, so consult official GOV.UK and the relevant Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority information before retaining fish.
• Take only fish you will use lawfully and responsibly, return undersized or unwanted catches quickly, and never leave nets, line or litter on the bank.
