Paull Sea Wall

Paull Sea Wall is a tidal Humber Estuary shore mark on the East Riding bank, valued for its deep-water estuary fishing, especially through the colder months. It is a working, fast-moving estuarine environment rather than an easy open-beach venue, so it rewards sensible timing, robust tackle and careful attention to the tide.

• Best regarded as a mixed estuary mark, with the chance of fish moving along the Humber rather than a venue where catches are guaranteed.
• Autumn and winter are the traditional periods to target codling, whiting and flounder; summer can produce more varied fishing.
• The water is commonly coloured and tidal flow is substantial, making bait presentation and lead choice more important than extreme casting distance.
• Conditions, access points and the productive channels can alter after weather, dredging activity and seasonal sediment movement.

The mark runs along the flood-defence/sea-wall frontage near Paull, on the north-east bank of the Humber, east of Hull. Anglers commonly fish from sections of the defended bank or adjacent firm shoreline where access is available, but the exact usable pegs and ground can vary considerably.

• Approach from Paull using lawful public routes and established access points; do not assume every track, gate or field edge is public.
• Parts of the frontage are beside agricultural land, drainage infrastructure and flood defences, so keep gates as found and avoid obstructing farm or maintenance access.
• A sea wall gives welcome height above the water, but it can also leave a steep drop, awkward landing and little margin for error at the edge.
• Productive water is often close in when the tide covers the margins, although casting toward a defined run, channel or crease can be more useful than casting blindly as far as possible.
• Check the ground in daylight before a first night session, particularly for safe footing, snags, escape routes and the point at which the flood tide reaches the bank.

Paull Sea Wall is primarily associated with Humber Estuary species, and the likely catch changes markedly with season, salinity and the strength of the run. Codling, whiting and flounder are the headline shore targets, but a mixed bag is always possible.

• Codling may show from the autumn into winter, particularly when coloured water, fresh bait and favourable weather coincide.
• Whiting are regular cold-water visitors and can provide consistent sport after dark, often taking worm, squid and fish baits.
• Flounder are an important estuary target and can feed very close to the wall or along softer, silty margins.
• Eels, dabs and other flatfish may occur, while small ray, bass, sole, smooth-hound and other seasonal visitors are possible when conditions and salinity suit them.
• Small fish, undersize fish and non-target species should be returned carefully; use a disgorger and avoid leaving discarded line or hooks on the bank.

A straightforward but strong ledger approach is the normal starting point at Paull, with enough lead to hold bottom without continually dragging through the tide. Fish two rods only if you can manage them safely and prevent lines crossing as the current changes.

• Use a fixed-spool reel with a reliable drag, a stout shock leader where appropriate, and abrasion-resistant terminal tackle for rough wall-side ground.
• Start with a plain clipped-down rig, pulley rig or Pennell-style presentation for larger winter baits; simpler flowing rigs can be effective for flounder and smaller species when the tide permits.
• Carry a range of breakaway or grip leads, as the required weight depends on the state of tide, wind direction and local flow; use only enough weight to hold safely.
• Peeler crab and fresh crab can be excellent estuary baits, while lugworm, ragworm, black lug, squid and fish strips all have a place depending on the target species.
• Keep baits neat and securely bound with bait elastic, as a powerful run can quickly strip loose worm baits.
• Cast across or slightly downtide only where it is safe and clear to do so; regularly check whether the lead is holding, the line is sweeping, or a snag has developed.

Tide state is central to fishing Paull Sea Wall: the Humber can rise quickly and run hard, with local flow shaped by channels, wind and freshwater discharge. Many anglers concentrate on the latter part of the flood, high water and the early ebb, but the best window can differ between pegs and species.

• Consult an up-to-date local tide table before travelling and allow for the fact that a large estuary tide can cover low ground sooner than expected.
• A moderate, coloured tide is often favourable for codling and whiting, whereas a very strong run may make it difficult to hold bottom or fish effectively.
• Flounder can feed during daylight as well as darkness, particularly around the flood and over softer margins.
• Night fishing can improve whiting and winter codling prospects, but only after checking access and footing in daylight.
• Strong onshore or cross-estuary winds can create uncomfortable chop against the wall and make landing fish, handling tackle and remaining stable much harder.
• Do not rely on a previously fished channel being in the same place: Humber banks and gullies are mobile.

This is not a casual low-tide wandering venue. The Humber has deep water, strong currents, soft mud and major commercial shipping traffic, and anglers should treat every session as an exposed estuary outing.

• Never fish below the flood line or walk onto mudflats, exposed banks or revetment that may become cut off by the tide.
• Keep well back from the edge, especially in darkness, wet weather or high winds; algae, clay, loose stone and sloping concrete can be very slippery.
• Wear suitable footwear, warm waterproof clothing, a headtorch for night fishing and a charged phone; tell someone where you are and when you expect to return.
• Do not attempt to wade or retrieve tackle from the water. The current and soft estuarine mud can be dangerous even close to shore.
• Remain alert to passing vessels and their wash, and do not place rods or equipment where they obstruct a path, gate, access track or flood-defence inspection route.
• Accessibility is limited: uneven surfaces, steps, grassy slopes, narrow paths and the high wall edge can make the mark unsuitable for anglers with restricted mobility.

Paull village provides the nearest basic services, but the sea-wall frontage itself should be treated as a self-sufficient fishing mark. Take everything needed for the session and leave the area exactly as found.

• Parking availability depends on the chosen lawful access point; use designated or considerate roadside parking only and do not block field entrances, passing places or service routes.
• There are no facilities to rely on at the fishing position for bait, tackle, shelter, toilets or emergency assistance.
• Bring drinking water, food, spare batteries, a first-aid kit, a landing tool appropriate to the wall height and a bag for all litter.
• Local shops and services can have limited hours, so buy bait and supplies before arriving rather than expecting to obtain them at the mark.
• Take used line, bait packaging and discarded bait home; these are particularly hazardous to wildlife, livestock and other path users.

Paull is often most productive for anglers who fish the tide in front of them rather than treating the whole wall as identical. A little observation before setting up can save a great deal of tackle and improve the chances of locating feeding fish.

• Arrive early enough to watch the water, identify smoother channel runs, visible seams and areas where the flow slackens slightly.
• Ask locally, or check recent reports, about the current state of the ground before making a long journey; conditions in the Humber change quickly.
• For winter codling, prioritise fresh, well-presented crab or worm baits and fish through the better-coloured stages rather than overcomplicating the rig.
• For flounder, shorten casts at times and try a modest worm bait close to likely margins; not every fish will be in mid-channel.
• Carry spare rigs and leads, but avoid excessive casting if a fishable presentation is already holding: steady, fresh bait in the right water is often more effective.
• Fish with a companion on unfamiliar night sessions, and choose a peg with a clear route back to the vehicle before darkness falls.

There is no clear basis for describing Paull Sea Wall as universally closed to fishing, but access along a flood defence does not automatically give permission to fish from every section. Rules can arise from land ownership, temporary works, navigation safety, environmental protections and local signage.

• Follow all posted notices, gates, restricted-area signs and instructions from landowners, flood-defence staff, harbour or navigation authorities; move on if asked to leave a non-public area.
• Check current national and regional sea-fisheries rules before retaining any catch, including species-specific minimum conservation reference sizes, bag limits and seasonal restrictions.
• Bass rules in particular are subject to change, so verify the current recreational angling requirements through official government or fisheries-authority information before keeping one.
• Do not fish in a manner that interferes with navigation, commercial activity, maintenance works, public rights of way or access for emergency vehicles.
• If fishing near a freshwater outfall, drain, river connection or non-tidal water, check whether separate Environment Agency permissions or local rules apply; do not assume estuary rules cover every adjoining water.
• Take no protected or prohibited species, and report any unusual catch only through appropriate official or local angling channels.
