Paull Holme Strays

Paull Holme Strays is a wild, tidal Humber estuary mark near Paull in the East Riding of Yorkshire. It can produce worthwhile estuary fishing, especially in the colder months, but it is more a place for the mobile and self-sufficient angler than an easy, all-tide venue.

• The fishing is generally from the Humber foreshore and channels rather than from the managed wetland itself.
• Expect strong tide, soft mud, changing banks and a large amount of commercial estuary traffic.
• It is best approached as a specialist estuary mark: conditions and exact fishable ground can alter substantially after weather, floods and dredging activity.

The mark lies on the north bank of the Humber in the Paull area, east of Hull, beside the Paull Holme Strays tidal wetland. Access is potentially sensitive because the surrounding land includes flood-defence infrastructure, wetland habitat and privately managed ground.

• Use only established public access routes, rights of way and legitimate foreshore entry points; do not cross fenced land, crops, grazing fields or signed conservation areas.
• Parking arrangements can be limited and may change, so avoid blocking gates, farm entrances, tracks or emergency access.
• The final approach to the water can be uneven, muddy and slippery, particularly after rain or spring tides.
• Treat any path to the foreshore as tide-dependent: a route that is straightforward on a low tide may be flooded or cut off later in the session.

The Humber is a productive but highly seasonal estuary, with fish presence governed by salinity, freshwater flow, temperature and tide. Flounder and other estuary species are the dependable expectation, while winter visits can bring better chances of larger sea fish.

• Flounder are a principal target, particularly over clean-to-mixed estuary ground and on calmer, coloured-water tides.
• Whiting can show through autumn and winter, often after dark, with codling a realistic but variable cold-weather possibility.
• Silver eels may be encountered in the estuary, especially in warmer periods and around moving water.
• Bass, mullet, thornback ray and smoothhound are possible in suitable seasonal conditions, but should not be treated as guaranteed catches at this specific spot.
• Small estuary species, including gobies and other bait-stealers, can be common and may dictate tougher or larger bait presentations.

A conventional beach-casting setup is appropriate, with enough lead and line strength to hold bottom safely in a powerful tidal river. The productive approach is usually to fish the moving water and adapt to the depth, flow and colour in front of you rather than simply casting as far as possible.

• A 4–6 oz breakout/grip lead is often useful; select the minimum weight that holds safely because flow can be severe.
• Use robust rigs with short, controlled hooklengths when tide and debris are heavy; pulley-style rigs can help when retrieving fish over rough or muddy margins.
• For flounder, try worm, ragworm, lugworm, crab and small fish-strip baits on modest hooks, often with restrained visual attraction rather than excessive bling.
• For whiting and codling, use larger worm-and-squid, mussel, crab or fish baits on appropriately stronger hooks and snoods.
• Carry spare rigs, leads and terminal tackle: snagging debris and losing grip leads is part of Humber fishing.
• Fish within a sensible casting range and watch where the main flow runs; a shorter cast into a defined channel edge can outfish a blind long cast.

This is fundamentally a tide-led mark. The Humber’s range, current and bore-like surges on larger tides can make the same beach or mud edge fish very differently from one session to the next.

• Plan around a reliable local tide table and arrive early enough to inspect the ground in daylight where possible.
• The flood can push water quickly across low foreshore; do not wait until water is at your feet before considering your exit.
• Moderate tides are often more manageable for fishing, while big springs can create difficult casting, heavy weed/debris and unsafe access.
• Coloured water after wind or freshwater runoff can favour estuary species, but very high freshwater flow can also move fish and make presentation difficult.
• Autumn and winter darkness are usually the more traditional period for whiting and codling, while warmer months can bring better chances of bass, eels and rays.
• Wind direction matters: exposed banks can become unpleasant or hazardous in strong onshore winds, while a hard crosswind makes line control difficult.

Paull Holme Strays should be treated as a potentially hazardous estuary environment rather than a family-friendly promenade mark. Mud, fast water, isolated fishing positions and the possibility of being cut off are the major considerations.

• Never fish alone if possible, and tell someone exactly where you are going and when you expect to return.
• Check tide times, weather, flood warnings and daylight hours before setting out; leave ample time to walk back before the tide covers the route.
• Do not attempt to cross soft mud, gullies, creeks or newly exposed banks to gain extra distance from the shore.
• Wear suitable waterproof footwear with good grip, warm layers and a buoyancy aid where conditions or position justify it; carry a charged phone and headtorch.
• Keep well clear of the water’s edge during strong flow, and never turn your back on the tide while setting up or retrieving.
• The terrain, uneven approaches and lack of nearby amenities make this a poor choice for anglers with limited mobility or anyone needing step-free, stable access.
• Be alert for vessels and wash in the navigable Humber channel; avoid casting into marked navigation water or creating any hazard to river users.

Facilities at the immediate fishing area should be assumed to be minimal or absent. Arrive self-contained and leave the place cleaner than you found it.

• Bring drinking water, food, a first-aid kit, lighting, spare clothing and a means of taking all litter home.
• Do not rely on public toilets, tackle shops, shelter or refreshment facilities being available at the mark.
• Nearest services are more likely to be found in Paull or Hull, so obtain bait, fuel and essential tackle before travelling to the foreshore.
• Keep vehicles on legal, suitable ground and do not drive onto sea defences, tracks intended for maintenance, grassland or the foreshore.

Success here comes from observation and repeat visits. Spend time learning which sections remain firm underfoot, where channels form, and how the tide reaches your intended exit route.

• Visit first in daylight and preferably on a modest tide; it is far easier to judge the ground before attempting a night session.
• A landing net with a long handle can be useful where there is a soft or steep margin, but do not overreach towards moving water.
• Keep tackle compact and above the predicted tide line; loose boxes and rod rests can disappear quickly if the water rises faster than expected.
• Fresh worm, crab when seasonally available, squid and oily fish strips cover most likely Humber situations; bring a selection rather than relying on one bait.
• If weed, timber or debris is continually collecting on the line, shorten casts, use a more controlled rig or move rather than persisting in an unfishable flow.
• Respect other users of the flood bank and wetland, including walkers, birdwatchers, land managers and working river traffic.

Fishing permission at the exact Paull Holme Strays access point should not be assumed simply because the Humber foreshore is nearby. There may be restrictions arising from land ownership, flood-defence works, conservation management, temporary closures or local signage.

• Check current signs at every access point and comply with instructions from landowners, the Environment Agency, harbour or navigation authorities, and reserve managers.
