Hessle Foreshore

Hessle Foreshore is a tidal Humber estuary mark on the north bank at Hessle, close to the Humber Bridge. It is primarily a mud-and-sand estuary venue rather than a conventional open-coast beach, with fishing shaped heavily by tide height, coloured water and the very strong Humber flow.

• Expect an atmospheric but demanding estuary session, especially in autumn and winter when codling and whiting are the usual headline possibilities.
• The mark can also produce flounder, eel, small bass at suitable times, and assorted estuary species; results are variable and depend greatly on fresh water, shipping movement and tide.
• It suits anglers happy to fish from firm, safe ground near the top of the shore rather than those intending to walk far out across the flats.
• This is not a venue for treating the exposed mud as a shortcut to deeper water: the Humber’s foreshore can change quickly and is potentially hazardous.

The foreshore lies on the Hessle side of the Humber, beneath and around the approaches to the Humber Bridge. Access arrangements can vary between individual paths, parking areas, landowners and bridge-related infrastructure, so anglers should use established public routes and check conditions on arrival.

• The practical fishing area is generally the upper foreshore, where a cast reaches tidal channels rather than requiring a long walk over exposed mud.
• Parking and approach options are local and may be restricted, time-limited or busy, particularly around recreational areas and the bridge.
• Do not block gates, private accesses, emergency routes or paths used by walkers and cyclists.
• Avoid crossing fenced land, railway property, bridge structures or signed private ground in search of a shorter route.
• A trolley may help with gear on firm paths, but it is unsuitable for soft foreshore mud and uneven ground.

Hessle Foreshore is best viewed as a mixed Humber estuary mark. Flounder are among the most realistic regular targets, while colder-water periods can bring whiting and codling; no species is guaranteed on a given tide.

• Flounder: a principal target, particularly when the water is carrying colour and the tide is covering feeding ground.
• Whiting and codling: most associated with autumn and winter, often after rougher conditions have stirred the estuary and pushed coloured water through.
• Eels: can occur in warmer months and on mild, coloured tides.
• Bass: occasional fish are possible in suitable summer and early-autumn conditions, but this is not a reliable dedicated bass venue.
• Other catches: small flatfish, dabs, hooks-and-hold-on estuary oddities and nuisance crabs can feature depending on season and salinity.
• Humber catches can fluctuate sharply after heavy rainfall or prolonged settled weather, which alter the freshwater influence and salinity.

A simple two-rod estuary approach is effective: fish one bait close or at moderate range and, if ground permits, place a second bait farther down-tide or toward a channel. Keep tackle robust enough to hold bottom, but avoid making rigs unnecessarily heavy or complicated when flounder are the aim.

• Use a fixed-spool or multiplier outfit capable of casting a stable grip lead; tide strength determines the lead needed, so carry a range rather than relying on one weight.
• For flounder, clipped one- or two-hook flowing rigs, or a modest flapper rig, baited with ragworm, lugworm, mackerel strip or crab can be effective.
• For whiting and codling, use fresh worm, crab when available, squid-and-worm cocktails, or mackerel/squid combinations on a sturdy pennel or pulley-style rig where snags or stronger flow demand it.
• Do not overcast automatically: fish often feed surprisingly close on a flooding tide, and a shorter cast can be easier to hold and retrieve safely.
• Use circle hooks or appropriately sized conventional hooks if preferred, and release undersized or unwanted fish quickly with wet hands.
• Check baits frequently. Estuary crabs, weed and debris can strip or mask a bait, especially in stronger flow.

The tide is the defining factor at Hessle Foreshore. Productive water is normally found as the flood begins to cover the lower shore and through the fuller stages of the tide, but the exact safe fishing window depends on the day’s height, wind and the state of the foreshore.

• Plan around a rising tide and be in position well before the water reaches your chosen ground; do not wait on low-ground for the sea to catch you out.
• Many anglers favour the middle to later flood and the period around high water, when fish can move over newly covered feeding areas.
• Large spring tides can create difficult current, floating debris and rapidly shrinking safe ground; smaller tides may be more manageable but can fish differently.
• Coloured water is normal in the Humber and is often helpful for codling, whiting, flounder and eel fishing.
• Wind against tide can make the surface rough, increase drag on line and make access beside the water markedly less safe.
• Consult an up-to-date Humber tide table and weather forecast immediately before travelling; local tide timing and height matter more here than a generic "high-water" plan.

This is a potentially serious tidal-mud environment, not a carefree promenade mark. The Humber has fast-moving water, deep channels, soft sediment, commercial traffic and a rising tide that can cut off an unwary angler.

• Do not walk onto exposed mudflats or attempt to reach channels across the foreshore. Soft mud, hidden creeks and incoming water can trap or isolate people very quickly.
• Fish from firm, known ground with a clear retreat route, and leave ample time to get back to the access point before the tide covers lower paths or banks.
• Never fish alone if you are unfamiliar with the venue; tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return.
• Wear footwear with good grip, warm/waterproof layers and a headtorch after dark; carry a charged phone in a waterproof case.
• Keep well clear of bridge infrastructure, steep banks, eroded edges, flood defences and any area signed as restricted.
• The uneven approaches, soft ground and tidal constraints make this a difficult mark for anglers with limited mobility. Choose firm, publicly accessible hardstanding only, and avoid any route that requires negotiating mud, slopes or steps.

Facilities should not be assumed at the water’s edge. Hessle has shops and services nearby, but the foreshore itself should be treated as a self-sufficient fishing trip with no guarantee of toilets, lighting, bait or safe overnight parking.

• Bring all bait, drinking water, food, spare tackle and a means of lighting your swim and route out.
• Use local shops, cafés and fuel facilities responsibly where available, but check opening times rather than relying on them for an early or late session.
• There may be litter bins in nearby public areas, but take discarded line, bait packaging and fish waste home if no suitable bin is provided.
• Do not clean fish on paths, car parks or public seating areas.
• Mobile signal can be variable near banks and under structures, so download tide and weather information before setting out where possible.

The most successful approach is usually to keep the session mobile in thought rather than in physical position: arrive early, select a safe upper-shore stance, and let the tide bring fish within reach. Fresh bait, tidy rigs and careful observation of the water line generally matter more than extreme casting distance.

• Walk the accessible area at low water only from firm established routes to understand where the high-water edge, debris lines and safe exits are; do not venture onto the flats.
• Look for naturally deeper-looking water, creek mouths visible from safe ground and areas where the flood first pushes close to the bank.
• Fish with rods high enough to keep line above floating weed where practical, and use a grip lead that holds without becoming impossible to retrieve.
• A small amount of luminous tubing, beads or a coloured attractor can help on dull or night tides, but keep flounder rigs restrained rather than over-dressed.
• Autumn and winter sessions are often best timed around darkness and a flooding tide for whiting or codling, while milder periods can favour flounder and eel.
• Speak politely with local anglers on site: they may know which sections are currently firm, accessible and free from temporary works.

Fishing is not treated here as clearly prohibited, but access and fishing restrictions can change locally and may apply to particular paths, banks, bridge land, conservation areas or operational waterfront sections. Check current signs at every entrance and comply with directions from landowners, the local authority, bridge operators, harbour or navigation authorities and enforcement officers.

• A rod licence is not normally required solely for sea fishing in England, but rules differ where a water is legally classed or managed as freshwater; confirm the status if fishing tributaries, drains or enclosed waters.
• Follow current national and regional rules on protected species, minimum conservation sizes, catch limits and any seasonal restrictions. These requirements can change, so use official fisheries sources rather than relying on old tackle-shop advice.
• Be especially careful with migratory fish and any unusual catch: do not assume it may be retained; identify it correctly and follow the applicable rules.
• Respect commercial navigation and do not cast into channels used by vessels, moorings, landing stages or port-related infrastructure.
• Leave no trace, take all line and hooks away, and avoid disturbing birds or other wildlife on the estuary margin.
• If signage states that fishing, access, parking or night use is prohibited in a specific section, choose another lawful area rather than attempting to interpret around it.
