Brough Haven

Brough Haven is a demanding Humber-estuary shore mark on the north bank below Brough, rather than a straightforward open-coast beach. It can produce worthwhile estuary fishing, especially for flounder, but its tide, mud and access issues matter far more here than casting distance.

• Expect coloured, fast-moving estuarine water, soft intertidal ground and a fishing experience governed by the state of tide.
• It is best approached as a local, conditions-led mark: a productive session is possible, but it is not a place to arrive without first checking a safe, lawful route to the bank.
• The mark is generally more suited to patient bait fishing than to mobile lure fishing or long, beach-style casting.

Brough Haven lies on the Humber shore south of Brough in East Riding of Yorkshire, around the old haven/foreshore area. The precise practical entry point can change with land management, flood-defence work and the condition of paths, so do not assume that every track or gate gives public access to the water.

• Approach only by an established public route or with the landowner's permission; banks, tracks, boatyard areas and working land may be private.
• Use lawful parking in or around Brough where available, and never obstruct farm entrances, access tracks, slipways or flood-defence gates.
• The shore is largely estuarine mud and silt rather than firm sand or shingle. A spot that looks reachable from the top of the bank may be unsafe or impossible to leave once the tide covers the lower ground.
• Before carrying tackle down, walk the access route in daylight, identify the retreat route and check whether the intended fishing position remains above the advancing tide.
• This is not a reliable venue for fishing directly beside any mooring, slipway, industrial frontage or navigation-related structure; keep clear of operations and follow posted instructions.

Flounder are the classic Humber target at Brough Haven, with the estuary's muddy ground and tidal flow well suited to worm-bait fishing. Other catches are seasonal and highly dependent on salinity, freshwater flow, weather and whether fish are moving through the estuary.

• Flounder are the principal expectation, particularly when there is enough moving water to bring food across the flats.
• Bass may occur in the warmer part of the year, especially when crab and small fish are present, though numbers can be variable this far inside the estuary.
• Whiting and small codling can show in the colder months on suitable tides, but this is not a dependable open-coast cod venue.
• Eels and other estuarine by-catch are possible; handle all fish carefully and return unwanted fish promptly.
• Small flatfish and occasional estuary species may also feature, but anglers should set expectations for mixed, often modest-sized catches rather than a guaranteed specimen mark.

Simple, secure bottom rigs are the sensible starting point at Brough Haven. The aim is to present a natural bait close to the estuary bed while keeping enough hold in the tidal flow to avoid constantly being swept across the shore.

• Use a robust fixed-spool or multiplier outfit capable of casting a suitably heavy grip lead and controlling fish in current; match terminal tackle to the tide rather than forcing light gear to hold.
• A clipped two-hook flapper, flowing rig or other tidy flounder rig with relatively small hooks is a useful baseline. Keep traces short enough to reduce tangles in the flow.
• Ragworm, lugworm, maddies and small worm cocktails are dependable flounder baits. Fresh, restrained baits usually outfish oversized offerings in coloured estuary water.
• For a possible bass or winter round fish, fish a larger worm, crab when seasonally available, or a modest fish-and-worm bait on a stronger single-hook or pulley-style rig.
• Cast only as far as is necessary to find fishable water. On estuary marks, fish can feed close in along the edge of a flooding tide, while excessive range can place tackle in heavier flow or snag-prone ground.
• Use a rod rest set well back from the waterline and keep tackle compact. You may need to move quickly if the flood overtops the lower shelf.

The tide is the defining feature at Brough Haven. A flooding tide commonly brings the most practical fishing water, while the strength and speed of the Humber can make the ebb uncomfortable, unfishable or unsafe from low ground.

• Plan around a rising tide and leave with a generous margin before the water cuts off your route; do not rely on a previous visit's timing because wind, pressure and river flow can alter conditions.
• Moderate tides are often easier to fish than the largest springs, which can produce severe current, rapid flooding and difficult lead-holding.
• Coloured water is normal and is not a reason to avoid the mark. Moving, slightly coloured water is often favourable for flounder and other bait-feeding estuary fish.
• Westerly weather can make the mark comparatively sheltered, whereas strong winds blowing along or into the Humber can steepen the chop, increase drift and make a muddy exit far more hazardous.
• Avoid fishing when there is fog, poor visibility, storm conditions or significant river flooding. Commercial traffic and the scale of the estuary make visibility especially important.

This is a high-risk foreshore if treated casually. Deep mud, powerful tidal flow, a rapidly advancing flood and nearby vessel traffic mean that Brough Haven is unsuitable for wading and is a poor choice for anyone unable to negotiate uneven, slippery banks independently.

• Do not walk out onto mudflats, attempt to wade channels or retrieve snagged tackle from the foreshore. Estuarine mud can trap a person quickly and the tide can then remove every safe exit.
• Fish with a companion where possible, tell somebody your plan, carry a charged phone in a waterproof pouch and have a headtorch even if starting in daylight.
• Wear footwear with dependable grip and clothing suitable for mud and sudden weather changes. A personal flotation device is sensible when fishing close to deep or fast water.
• Keep well clear of the navigation channel, moored craft, launches and any commercial or industrial activity. Never assume that vessels can see, stop for or avoid an angler on the bank.
• Do not fish from a flood defence, wall, structure or private landing unless access is clearly permitted and safe. Some routes to the shore may be closed or restricted without notice.
• The uneven ground, steep bank sections and absence of dependable step-free access make this a challenging mark for wheelchair users and for anglers with limited mobility.

Brough has the practical advantages of a sizeable settlement, but the haven itself should be treated as an undeveloped shore mark with no guaranteed angling facilities. Prepare before leaving town rather than expecting services at the water.

• Obtain bait, food, fuel and any last-minute tackle requirements in Brough or from a tackle supplier before travelling to the shore.
• There are no dependable public toilets, tackle shops, shelters, lighting or safe litter facilities at the fishing position.
• Take drinking water, a first-aid kit, a means of cleaning hands after handling bait and a bag for all litter and discarded line.
• Do not leave vehicles on verges, passing places, private tracks or anywhere that could impede agricultural, emergency or site access.
• Mobile signal can vary around low ground and behind banks, so download tide information and tell another person where you intend to fish before setting out.

At Brough Haven, observation is as valuable as the right bait. A short daylight reconnaissance at low water can reveal the shape of the foreshore and, more importantly, whether there is a genuinely safe place to fish as the tide fills.

• Start with one or two tidy worm baits and adjust hook size, bait size and casting range before changing to more complicated rigs.
• Watch for signs of feeding fish, such as bird activity, baitfish movement or a distinct change in water colour along an edge, but do not follow those signs onto unsafe ground.
• Keep a session log including tide state, wind direction, river colour and catches. Estuary fishing is variable, and personal records soon identify the conditions that produce locally.
• Respect nearby residents, walkers, boat users and working land. Quiet arrivals, controlled lighting after dark and complete litter removal help preserve angling tolerance at sensitive access points.
• If the bank looks muddy, the water is already close to your escape route or you are uncertain about access, choose a safer Humber-side venue rather than trying to make the session work.

There is no clear, universal prohibition on sea angling at the place commonly called Brough Haven, but that does not create a right to cross private land or fish from every part of the shore. Access restrictions, temporary works and conservation controls must be checked on the day.

• Obey all signs, gates, site notices and instructions from landowners, harbour or navigation personnel, and authorised officers. Leave immediately if an area is signed as closed or access is withdrawn.
• The Humber Estuary has important wildlife and conservation designations. Avoid disturbing birds, especially roosting or feeding flocks, and do not drive, camp, light fires or dig bait on sensitive foreshore without confirming that it is permitted.
• Check current national and local rules for legal fish sizes, catch limits, protected species, seasonal measures and any restrictions affecting bass, eels or other species before retaining a catch.
• A freshwater rod licence is not normally required solely for sea angling in England, but it does not grant permission to use private land, restricted structures or controlled access routes.
• Check official tidal information, local authority access updates, Natural England guidance and any Humber navigation or land-management notices before travelling; conditions and permissions can change.
