Mappleton Beach

5.2· Beach · East Riding of Yorkshire

Mappleton Beach is a Holderness sand-and-shingle shore mark backed by prominent rock armour and groynes, with access generally from village parking and paths down to the foreshore. It fishes best on a rising tide and through dusk or darkness, producing typical east-coast winter codling, whiting and flatfish, while the defended sections can hold occasional bass and dogfish; expect mobile sand, rough water after easterlies and snag risk close to the armour.

Mappleton is a bait-led Holderness surf mark where the day’s beach shape matters as much as casting range. Build a session around the later flood and early ebb, ideally with a modest coloured sea, then choose between cleaner sand for flatfish or water adjacent to the coastal defences for rough-ground opportunities. It can produce well for autumn-winter codling, whiting and dabs, but it is not a mark to force in a severe onshore sea or when the rising water compromises a safe return.

  • Know when a coloured flood tide turns Mappleton on for codling and whiting
  • Choose cleaner gutters for flatfish instead of feeding rigs to the armour
  • Match the rig and bait to sand, surf or defended ground in front of you
  • Recognise the sea-state and tide signals that make this mark a no-go
