Hornsea North Beach

Hornsea North Beach is a classic East Yorkshire open-shore mark, with a wide sandy foreshore, groynes and changing surf gullies north of Hornsea’s main seafront. It is principally a beach-casting venue, best known for autumn and winter bait fishing but capable of producing varied summer sport when conditions are right.

• Expect a mobile, tide-shaped venue rather than permanently obvious fish-holding features.
• The mark suits anglers prepared to walk, read the water and move between groynes or gullies.
• It can fish very differently from one tide, wind direction or sea state to the next.

The North Beach lies on the northern side of Hornsea, reached from the town’s seafront and nearby beach access points. Access is generally straightforward from the promenade area, although the amount of exposed beach and the ease of walking it depend heavily on the tide.

• Use the established public access points and keep clear of private property, coastal-defence works and any signed restricted areas.
• Parking, shops and food are available in Hornsea, making this more convenient than many remote Holderness coast marks.
• A short walk north can take anglers away from the busiest central beachfront, but walking distances increase considerably on a low tide.
• Avoid setting up directly beneath unstable cliff sections or close to active erosion, and do not rely on old paths or slips being usable after bad weather.

Hornsea North Beach has the usual East Yorkshire sandy-shore mix, with the strongest fishing often arriving as water temperatures fall and seas become coloured. Codling and whiting are the headline winter targets, while flatfish and summer species provide the year-round background sport.

• Codling: most likely from autumn into winter, particularly after a moderate northerly or north-easterly sea has coloured the water.
• Whiting: common winter targets, often feeding after dark and responding well to worm, squid and fish baits.
• Dabs and flounder: reliable possibilities over the sand, especially where a gully, run-off or softer patch can be found.
• Bass: possible in warmer months and early autumn, particularly around surf, shallow feeding water and crab-rich ground.
• Smooth-hounds, dogfish and occasional rays may turn up in suitable summer conditions, although they should not be treated as guaranteed catches.
• Smaller species such as lesser-spotted dogfish, pouting and eel can feature according to season, tide and bait presentation.

This is predominantly a bait-and-surf-casting mark. The most productive approach is usually to locate the nearest fishable gully or disturbed water rather than casting blindly for maximum distance.

• A beachcaster in the usual 12–14 ft class with a fixed-spool or multiplier reel is appropriate for most sessions.
• Use a clipped-down pulley, pennel pulley or simple two-hook flapper for codling and whiting; match hook size and rig strength to bait, tide and expected fish.
• For flatfish, use a lighter two-hook flapper with smaller hooks and short, neat bait strips; coloured attractors can help in clear or moderately coloured water.
• Lugworm, ragworm, peeler crab, mussel, squid and fresh fish baits all have a place. Worm-and-crab cocktails are a sound starting point for codling when the sea is carrying colour.
• Hold bottom with a suitably sized grip lead; the required weight can change quickly as the tide runs or a sea builds.
• Fish close-in as well as long: troughs immediately beyond the surf line can outfish distant casts, especially around high water.

The beach is often easiest and most productive around the flooding tide, high water and the first part of the ebb, when fish can move over the shallower sand. Low water is valuable for finding gullies, channels, firmer walking routes and any rougher patches for a later session.

• A moderate coloured sea is traditionally favoured for codling, while a very large, dangerous sea is neither necessary nor sensible.
• Northerly and north-easterly weather can improve winter fishing after the sea has had time to settle into a fishable colour.
• Calmer, clearer conditions can favour flatfish, bass and summer species, though bright, clear daytime water may make fish cautious.
• Evening, darkness and dawn are often worthwhile, especially for whiting, codling and bass.
• Check the tide forecast before travelling: the beach can become very broad at low water, while a flooding tide can rapidly reduce the available fishing space.

This is an exposed North Sea beach, so surf, wind, darkness and a fast-advancing tide are the main hazards. The promenade-side access is relatively easy, but soft sand, groynes and uneven ground make it less suitable for some anglers once away from the main frontage.

• Check weather, sea-state and tide information before setting out, and leave plenty of time to return before the flood cuts off your route.
• Do not fish in severe onshore conditions, near breaking waves or where spray and wind make casting unsafe.
• Groynes can be slippery, damaged or partially buried; avoid climbing on them, especially in darkness.
• Wear flotation-appropriate outer clothing where conditions warrant it, plus warm waterproof layers, a headtorch and footwear with good grip.
• Never turn your back on the sea, and keep children and dogs well away from the water’s edge.
• Take all litter, discarded line and bait packaging home; these are particularly hazardous on a busy public beach.

Hornsea is a well-served coastal town, so anglers can obtain food, supplies and other essentials nearby before heading to the beach. Facilities immediately beside a chosen fishing position should not be assumed, particularly if fishing north of the central promenade.

• Shops, cafés and takeaways are available in town, with opening hours varying by season and time of day.
• Public toilets and parking may be available around the seafront, but check current local arrangements and any parking restrictions before leaving a vehicle.
• A trolley can be useful for transporting a beach box and heavy tackle across the sand, although it may be awkward over soft ground and around groynes.
• Bring enough water, spare batteries and a means of keeping bait cool if fishing away from the town frontage or into darkness.

Success here usually comes from treating the beach as a moving landscape. Spend a little time watching the sea and, where safe, walking it at low water rather than committing to the first convenient casting spot.

• Look for darker, smoother water between breaking sections: this can indicate a deeper gully or channel.
• Fish the ends and sides of groynes with care, where current movement can create small depressions, but avoid snag-prone or unsafe structures.
• If bites are absent, move along the beach or alter casting range; one gully can hold fish while the next stretch is barren.
• Fresh, well-presented bait matters on this coast, particularly after rough weather when scent and bulk can be more important than elaborate rigs.
• In winter, a later-evening session around high water is often a practical starting plan; in summer, early morning or dusk can avoid the busiest beach period.
• Be considerate of walkers, swimmers, dogs and other beach users, and make every cast only when the area behind and in front is clear.

This is a public recreational beach rather than a mark known for a blanket, year-round angling ban, but local restrictions can apply to particular sections, seasons, events or bathing areas. The absence of a general ban should not be taken as permission to fish through signed swimming zones or to ignore temporary controls.

• Read all East Riding of Yorkshire Council notices, beach signage, parking terms and any harbour or coastal-management instructions on arrival.
• Give swimmers, water users and designated bathing areas a wide berth; do not cast where people may enter the casting or landing area.
• Check current national and local rules on minimum sizes, catch limits, protected species and shore collection before retaining any fish or shellfish.
• Observe any current bass conservation measures and return undersized, prohibited or unwanted fish carefully and promptly.
• If signage, lifeguards, council officers or event marshals state that angling is not permitted in a specific area, use another section of beach or do not fish.
