Ulrome Beach

Ulrome Beach is a classic Holderness surf-fishing venue: a long, open sweep of sand beneath rapidly eroding clay cliffs between Barmston and Skipsea. It can produce good fishing when there is colour and movement in the North Sea, but it is a weather-exposed mark rather than an easy, all-tide beach.

• Best known locally for autumn and winter codling, whiting and other rough-weather fishing.
• Summer and early autumn can bring bass, flatfish, smooth-hound, rays and mackerel on suitable conditions, although catches are very tide- and weather-dependent.
• The beach changes regularly after gales, so yesterday's productive gutter or bank may not exist on the next visit.
• It suits anglers prepared to walk, read the surf and fish around the better-looking water rather than rely on one permanent feature.

Ulrome lies on the East Yorkshire coast south of Barmston and north of Skipsea, with fishing taken from the open beach rather than a harbour wall or formal pier. Access is generally from local beach paths, caravan-park areas or roadside approaches, but routes can alter or close because the Holderness cliffs are actively eroding.

• Do not assume that every track, car park or path near the shoreline is public; respect private land, holiday-park boundaries and any access notices.
• Expect a walk over soft sand, shingle patches or uneven ground after leaving the access point.
• Avoid standing beneath the cliffs or using routes directly under them: falls and slumps are a genuine hazard on this coast.
• The most useful fishing water is often found by walking the beach at low water and noting gullies, darker troughs, exposed clay, drainage channels and the edges of sandbanks.
• Parking and access arrangements can change, particularly after storm damage, so check locally before travelling.

Ulrome's open surf and mobile sandy ground support a broad but seasonal mix of East Yorkshire shore species. Codling and whiting are the principal cold-water targets, while warmer months offer more varied fishing when the sea is settled enough.

• Autumn and winter: codling, whiting, dab, flounder, plaice, pouting and occasional dogfish.
• Spring and summer: bass, smooth-hound, thornback ray, lesser-spotted dogfish, flounder, plaice, dab and small whiting; mackerel may show when clear water and bait fish are present.
• After sustained rough weather, coloured water can bring codling close, particularly where a gutter or deeper wash forms within casting range.
• Bass are most realistic around surf, discoloured water, bait activity and the periods around dawn, dusk or darkness; release fish carefully and follow current retention rules.
• Species availability varies markedly from year to year, and this is not a venue where every listed species should be expected on every session.

A standard beach-casting outfit covers most situations at Ulrome, but tackle should be chosen for the day’s surf rather than simply for maximum casting distance. In a heavy sea, holding bottom and presenting a robust bait matter far more than reaching the horizon.

• For codling and whiting, use clipped or pulley-style rigs carrying one or two hooks, with breakout grips or suitably weighted sinkers when the tide is pulling.
• Lugworm, ragworm, squid, crab, mussel and fish baits are all worth carrying; cocktail baits can be effective for codling in coloured water.
• Fish bait such as mackerel, bluey or squid-strip can account for whiting, dogfish, rays and occasional larger predators, especially after dark.
• In settled summer conditions, lighter two-hook flapper rigs baited with worm, small strips of fish or shellfish can find flatfish and smaller species.
• For smooth-hound, ray and bass, use a stronger single-hook or two-hook rig with fresh crab, worm-and-crab cocktails, squid or fish bait as appropriate.
• Start by placing one bait short, into the nearest likely gutter, and another farther out if conditions allow; fish often feed surprisingly close in the surf.
• Carry spare rigs, weights and shockleaders, as moving sand, shell and occasional rough or clay patches can cause losses.

Ulrome usually fishes best when the sea has enough movement to form a defined surf and put colour into the water, without becoming unsafe or impossible to hold bottom. Tide stage matters, but the state of the sea and the beach’s current shape are often the bigger factors.

• A building or easing sea after an onshore or north-easterly blow is a traditional time to try for codling and whiting.
• Moderate surf and coloured water can improve daytime sport, while darkness often increases the chances of whiting, codling, dogfish and larger feeding fish.
• Cleaner, calmer summer water is generally better for flatfish, bass, rays, smooth-hound and mackerel, though very clear, flat conditions can make daytime fishing slow.
• Fishable gullies may fill and empty with the tide; inspect at low water where safe, then plan your casting areas for the flood.
• Strong winds, large surf and spring tides can make the mark difficult or unsafe. Check a reliable local tide table and marine forecast before setting out rather than relying on generic tide advice.

This is an exposed natural beach with soft cliffs, changing access and potentially fast-rising water, so it demands sensible planning. It is not a highly accessible promenade-style mark.

• Check tide times, arrive early and keep a clear route back to your access point; do not allow the tide to cut off the beach behind you.
• Never fish directly beneath unstable cliffs, overhangs or fresh slips, and keep well back from cliff edges above.
• Wear footwear suitable for soft, wet sand and uneven approaches; waders can be useful but require caution in surf, channels and deep gullies.
• Use a headtorch after dark, carry a charged phone, and fish with a companion where possible, particularly in rough weather.
• Wind chill can be severe on this open coast even outside midwinter, while strong onshore winds can quickly produce dangerous surf.
• Beach access is likely to be difficult for wheelchair users and anyone with limited mobility because of sand, slopes and changing paths.
• If conditions look marginal, choose a safer sheltered venue rather than attempting to force a session.

Facilities immediately beside the fishing area should be treated as limited and variable, especially outside the holiday season. Anglers should arrive self-sufficient rather than expecting a permanent public angling hub.

• Take drinking water, food, a first-aid kit, lighting and enough tackle for the whole session.
• Shops, fuel, public toilets and food outlets are more reliably found in surrounding villages and larger coastal towns, but opening hours can be seasonal.
• Do not rely on holiday parks, cafés or private businesses for parking, toilet use or beach access unless they explicitly permit it.
• Take all litter, discarded line, bait packaging and damaged tackle home; the beach is exposed to the tide and litter is quickly lost to the sea.
• A vehicle-based session is practical only where lawful parking is available, so check restrictions at the point of arrival.

The key to Ulrome is mobility and observation: the most productive spot is usually where the sea is showing a feature, not necessarily the closest point to the car. A short reconnaissance walk can be worth more than an extra hour casting blindly.

• Look for a dark, smooth strip beyond broken white water, which often indicates a deeper gutter holding feeding fish.
• Freshly formed cuts beside sandbars, seams of coloured water and areas where waves break unevenly are all worth trying.
• Avoid casting repeatedly into obvious shallow, tumbling white water unless there is a close-in trough immediately beyond it.
• In rough water, keep baits compact and securely bound with bait elastic so they survive the cast and surf.
• During calm spells, use smaller, neater baits and lighter rigs where conditions permit; flatfish in particular may respond better than they do to oversized cod baits.
• Give other beach users plenty of room, especially in summer, and avoid casting where walkers, dogs, riders or bathers could enter the casting zone.
• Local tackle shops and recent reports can be especially useful here because beach profile, bait availability and access can change quickly.

There is no clear general indication that sea angling is universally prohibited along Ulrome Beach, but access and fishing can be restricted at particular entry points or on private land. Treat on-site signs, landowner instructions, seasonal notices and any emergency cliff-closure measures as authoritative.

• Sea fishing in England does not normally require the Environment Agency freshwater rod licence, but this does not override local access rules or fisheries regulations.
• Check current national rules for any species you intend to retain, particularly bass, rays, sharks and other regulated sea fish; rules and minimum sizes can change.
• Follow any current restrictions on bait collection, vehicle access, fires, camping, dogs or use of particular paths.
• Do not remove fish, bait or materials from any area marked as protected, privately managed or subject to a local conservation notice.
• If a sign is unclear, choose another access point or seek advice from the relevant landowner, local authority or a nearby tackle shop before fishing.
