Fraisthorpe Beach

Fraisthorpe Beach is a long, open East Yorkshire surf beach south of Bridlington, valued for simple shore fishing over clean sand and for its potential at the right stage of tide. It is primarily a mobile, light-to-medium beach-fishing venue rather than a deep-water mark, so locating gullies and fishing changing conditions matters more than casting extreme distance.

• A useful mark for bass, flatfish and seasonal autumn/winter species.
• Best approached as an open-coast venue: wind direction, sea state and recent water movement can transform the fishing.
• The beach is generally most productive around identifiable low-water channels, cuts and slightly darker, disturbed water rather than featureless sand.

The beach lies on the Holderness coast near Fraisthorpe, south of Bridlington, with access commonly made from the beach car-park area and then on foot across the sand. The walk to the water can become substantial at low tide, and access arrangements can change, so check notices at the entrance on arrival.

• Park only in designated areas and do not obstruct gates, tracks, farm access or emergency routes.
• Expect a short walk at higher water but a much longer carry over firm sand when the tide is well out.
• The main fishing area is open and exposed, with little shelter from a north-easterly or easterly wind.

Fraisthorpe’s clean sand and shallow surf suit a familiar Humber/Holderness mixed catch, with the best species changing strongly with season, tide and sea colour. Fish are often concentrated in gutters and along the edges of tidal channels rather than evenly spread across the beach.

Use beach tactics that can be adapted quickly to depth, drift and the distance of the nearest gutter. A two-rod approach can work well: one bait presented in the closest productive channel and another cast farther toward a deeper-looking feature.

• A 12–13 ft beachcaster, fixed-spool or multiplier reel, and suitably strong shock-leader arrangement are standard for rougher conditions and heavier leads.
• In calmer water, lighter beach gear can be more enjoyable and is usually ample for flatfish and smaller species.
• For flounder and dab, try clipped two-hook flapper or flowing rigs with smaller hooks and restrained bait sizes.
• Lugworm, ragworm, peeler crab, mackerel strip and squid all have their moments; fresh worm and crab are particularly worthwhile options for better fish.

Fraisthorpe is markedly tidal: low water reveals a broad expanse of sand, while the flood can bring fish within much more comfortable casting range. Productive windows are commonly found as water fills the gullies and again around higher water, but the precise best stage varies with the shape of the beach on the day.

• A rising tide is often the sensible starting point, particularly when fishing channels found on a low-water recce.
• The last part of the flood and the early ebb can be productive when enough depth remains close in.
• A moderate onshore sea can improve bass and codling chances by colouring the water, although it also makes fishing and access harder.
• Calm, clear conditions can favour flatfish, smaller baits and more delicate presentations, but may reduce the chance of storm-driven species.
• Strong east or north-east weather can create dangerous surf and rapidly alter the beach profile; do not rely on an old description of where channels lie.
• Check a current local tide table and weather forecast before travelling, and allow for the sea to cover low-water routes behind you.

This is an exposed, open beach with soft patches, changing channels and a fast-advancing tide, so it rewards sensible planning. It is not a fully accessible hard-standing fishing venue, particularly once anglers need to cross soft sand or fish near low water.

• Tell someone where you are going, keep a charged phone protected from spray, and fish with company where possible.
• Keep all kit well above the advancing tide line and monitor the water rather than waiting for it to reach your tripod.
• Do not attempt to cross tidal channels, cut off around water-filled gullies, or fish close to unstable scarps after rough weather.
• Wear suitable footwear for wet, uneven sand and warm, windproof clothing; wind chill can be severe outside summer.
• Night fishing is practical but requires a headtorch, spare power, visible clothing and careful awareness of incoming water.
• Car-park-to-beach access may be manageable for some anglers at higher tide, but the soft sand, long low-tide walk and lack of firm surface can present significant mobility barriers.
• If surf is heavy or conditions feel beyond your experience, choose a more sheltered venue.

Facilities at the immediate fishing area are limited, and anglers should arrive self-sufficient with water, food, waste bags and appropriate clothing. The nearby area may offer seasonal visitor facilities, but availability should not be assumed outside busy periods.

• Use the designated parking provision where available and check posted charges, opening arrangements and conditions.
• Public toilets, refreshments and tackle supplies are more reliably found in surrounding villages or Bridlington than on the fishing beach itself.
• There is little natural shelter on the open sands, so bring a shelter only if it can be safely secured and does not obstruct other beach users.
• Take discarded line, bait packaging and all litter home; loose line is particularly hazardous to birds and dogs.

The most consistent local approach is to let the beach dictate the session: arrive early enough to read the sand, then place baits in the nearest worthwhile water rather than automatically aiming for the horizon. Fraisthorpe can look uniformly shallow, but a small gully or bar end can hold a disproportionate share of the fish.

• Fish the edges of channels, especially where wave action shows a seam of smoother or darker water.
• Avoid repeatedly casting across a gutter if a shorter cast can put a bait along its edge.
• For a bass-orientated session, favour a mild coloured sea, a flooding tide and substantial worm or crab baits.
• For flatfish, downsize hooks and bait, keep rigs tidy, and move if bites do not develop as the tide covers the features.
• Autumn and winter sessions are often most worthwhile after a suitable sea has settled enough to fish safely, with darkness improving whiting prospects.

There is no clear general indication that recreational rod-and-line sea fishing is prohibited along the open beach, but access and activity can be controlled by local signs, land management rules, temporary works or conservation measures. Treat signage on the day as definitive, and do not fish if notices expressly prohibit access or angling.

• Check the car-park and beach entrance notices for access conditions, seasonal restrictions, dog-control zones, vehicle rules and any temporary closures.
