Barmston Beach

Barmston Beach is a long, open Holderness coast beach north of Bridlington, best known as a straightforward surf-fishing venue rather than a sheltered, feature-rich harbour mark. It can produce good fishing when there is coloured water, a workable surf and enough depth close in, especially through the cooler months.

• The shore is predominantly sand, with groynes, changing banks and occasional gullies rather than reliable fixed rock features.
• It is a mobile venue: storms, tides and ongoing coastal erosion can substantially alter the shape of the beach and where the fishable water lies.
• It is particularly worth considering for codling and whiting in autumn and winter, while summer brings a more mixed range of species.
• It is exposed to North Sea weather, so conditions can change quickly and the venue should not be treated as an easy, calm-water family beach when a sea is running.

Barmston lies on the East Yorkshire coast between Bridlington and Hornsea, with beach access from the Barmston village/holiday-park area and public routes leading down towards the shore. Access arrangements, parking availability and the condition of paths can change, so assess the route on arrival rather than relying on old reports.

• Use legitimate public access points and do not cut through holiday-park land, private property, fenced-off areas or unstable cliff ground.
• The beach may involve a walk over soft sand, particularly at low water when the sea can retreat a long way from the upper beach.

Barmston’s catches are driven heavily by season, sea state and water clarity. The classic target is codling in a rough, coloured autumn or winter sea, but the beach can offer useful mixed fishing across the year.

• Autumn and winter: codling, whiting, dabs and occasional flounder are the principal expectations; larger winter cod are possible in the right northerly or north-easterly conditions.
• Spring and summer: bass, flounder, dabs, eel, small smooth-hounds and dogfish may feature, with the exact mix varying markedly from year to year.
• Warmer-water opportunities: sole and plaice can be possible on suitable clean-ground patches, especially when the sea is settled, though they are not guaranteed targets.
• Other catches: rays and larger bass are possible but should be regarded as occasional bonuses rather than a dependable reason to travel.
• Small fish, crabs and other bait thieves can dominate in warm, calm conditions, so adapt bait size and presentation accordingly.

A simple beach-casting approach is usually the most effective, but distance alone is not the answer at Barmston. Spend time finding a nearer gully, darker water, a change in surf line or the edge of a sandbank before committing to very long casts.

• Use a beachcaster with a fixed-spool or multiplier reel, a shock leader where appropriate, and enough grip lead to hold in the prevailing tow.
• For codling and whiting, clipped one- or two-hook rigs carrying lugworm, ragworm, squid, crab or cocktails are reliable starting points; use locally fresh bait where possible.
• For bass, try ragworm, peeler crab or sandeel-style baits on a pulley, flowing or simple pennel arrangement, concentrating on moving water around the flood tide.

Barmston is generally most productive when the tide brings fish and depth within reach, with the flood and high-water period often the sensible starting point. Exact best stages vary with the state of the beach, so observe the water rather than treating any tide rule as absolute.

• Start around the latter part of the flood and fish through high water where safe; this is often when the deeper channels are closest to the upper beach.
• On very low tides, the flats can be extensive and the walk to productive water can be long; do not get stranded beyond a rising channel.
• Moderate surf and coloured water can be excellent for codling, whiting and bass, particularly after onshore or north-easterly weather, provided it remains safe to fish.
• Calm, clearer periods can favour flatfish and more delicate presentations, though fish may be farther out over the shallow ground.

This is an exposed natural beach with soft sand, variable tidal channels and an actively eroding coastline. It is not a fully accessible paved fishing promenade, and anglers should plan around the least mobile member of the party.

• Check the tide timetable and weather forecast before travelling, and keep a constant eye on the incoming tide rather than fishing with your back to the sea.
• Never shelter beneath, climb on, or fish immediately below the cliffs; falls can occur without warning, including after apparently dry weather.
• Keep clear of groynes in heavy surf and do not attempt to cross them when wet, slippery or partly submerged.
• Wear suitable footwear for deep sand and cold water, bring a headtorch for dusk sessions, and carry warm waterproof layers even in shoulder seasons.
• Fish with a companion where possible, tell someone your plan, and keep a charged phone protected from water and sand.
• The approach and beach surface may be difficult for wheelchairs, pushchairs and anglers carrying substantial tackle. Check the current access path and choose a short, firm route where available.
• If surf, wind, visibility or the tide makes a safe retreat uncertain, leave early; there is no catch worth becoming trapped for.

Facilities around Barmston are limited compared with a major resort, and some services are associated with holiday accommodation rather than open public provision. Treat toilets, food outlets, bins and parking as variable rather than guaranteed, especially outside the main holiday season.

• Fresh or carefully stored worm and crab bait is a major advantage for codling, bass and flatfish; use tougher squid or fish-strip additions when small crabs are stripping hooks.
• In a coloured sea, do not be afraid to fish a substantial bait relatively close in: fish often patrol the first trough and surf line.
• In clear, settled weather, scale down hook size and bait bulk for dabs, flounder and other flatfish, and give each cast time to settle.
• Avoid setting up tight to a groyne. The water may look attractive there, but changing swell can make retrieval and movement hazardous.
• Watch for weed after easterly weather. If it is continually towing the line, use more streamlined rigs, inspect frequently and consider whether conditions are simply unfishable.
