Auburn Sands

Auburn Sands is a long, open Holderness beach south of Bridlington, valued by sea anglers for its room, clean ground and potential for winter codling when the North Sea has coloured up. It is principally a bait-fishing venue rather than a place for consistently easy sport, and conditions make a major difference.

• The mark is generally associated with the beach around the small Auburn settlement, between the Fraisthorpe and Barmston stretches of coast.
• Expect a broad, gently shelving sandy shoreline, with the productive water often concentrated in temporary gullies, channels, coloured patches and any rougher mixed ground exposed by the tide.
• It can be a very pleasant summer evening venue for flatfish and smaller species, but its better-known opportunities are usually in the colder months and after suitable sea movement.
• The beach changes frequently through erosion and shifting sand; a productive feature on one visit may be filled in or moved after a storm.

Auburn Sands lies on the exposed East Riding coast south of Bridlington, away from the busier harbour and promenade fishing areas. Access is normally on foot from local road-end, farm-side or nearby beach access points, but the practical route and parking arrangements can change.

• Check current local signage before leaving a vehicle, particularly around private land, farm entrances and narrow lanes.
• Do not assume every track to the shore is a public vehicle route; park considerately and avoid blocking agricultural access, passing places, gates or emergency access.
• The final approach can involve uneven paths, soft sand and a walk across the beach, so travel light if you are unfamiliar with the area.
• In calm weather the beach offers plenty of casting room, but anglers should spread out rather than casting across one another's water.
• The shoreline is isolated compared with Bridlington, so it is sensible to tell somebody where you are going and when you expect to return.

Auburn Sands is most often fished for codling in the autumn and winter, with a useful supporting cast of flatfish and smaller shore species. Catches are highly tide-, weather- and season-dependent, and no species should be regarded as guaranteed.

• Codling are the headline target when there is a proper coloured sea, surf and some movement over the beach, especially during the colder part of the year.
• Flounder, dab and plaice can feature over the sand, with the exact mix varying with season and local seabed conditions.
• Whiting can provide evening and night sport in autumn and winter, sometimes alongside smaller codling.
• Bass may occur in warmer months, particularly when there is bait and movement in the surf, although they are far less predictable here than at dedicated estuary marks.
• Lesser-spotted dogfish, rays and occasional other North Sea species are possible at the right time, but should be viewed as bonuses rather than routine catches.
• Small pout, poor cod and other nuisance fish can strip baits after dark, particularly when the water is relatively calm.

A straightforward beach-casting approach with natural bait is the standard method at Auburn Sands. Start by reading the water rather than automatically casting as far as possible: a nearby gully, dirty seam or depression can outfish the distant horizon.

• For codling, use a robust two-hook clipped rig or a single-hook pulley-style rig matched to the tide and surf; keep terminal tackle strong enough for weed and rougher patches.
• Fresh or well-presented lugworm, ragworm, mussel, peeler crab and squid cocktails are all sensible codling baits, with the best choice depending on availability and water temperature.
• For flounder and dabs, lighter flowing rigs or simple two-hook flapper rigs carrying worm, ragworm strips, mussel or small squid strips are effective.
• Use breakout-style leads when the pull or surf demands them, but reduce weight where possible on clean, calm sand to make retrieval easier.
• A pair of rods can be useful: one carrying a larger cod bait in the deeper-looking water and another fishing a smaller, more refined bait closer in for flatfish.
• Keep baits fresh and check regularly. Crab, weed, shell fragments and small fish can quickly leave a rig ineffective.

The best time is dictated more by sea state, colour and the location of beach features than by a single universally reliable tide. Auburn Sands can fish poorly in bright, clear, flat conditions, then improve dramatically once the water has gained colour without becoming unfishable.

• A moderate onshore or northerly/easterly sea can create the coloured water and surf that often encourages codling to feed, but heavy storms can make casting unsafe or impractical.
• Fish the flood, high-water period and early ebb as a sensible starting plan, while remaining prepared to move if the visible channels are elsewhere.
• Low water is useful for learning the beach: note gullies, deeper drains, shell beds, firmer mixed patches and any troughs that may hold fish as the tide returns.
• Evening, darkness and overcast weather can improve confidence for whiting, codling and larger fish, though this is an exposed place to fish alone at night.
• Strong winds can make the beach unpleasant and can push surf, spray and floating weed into the line. Check the forecast, tide times and sea conditions before committing to a session.
• Avoid standing too close to the waterline in a rising sea; wave run-up can reach much farther than expected on a shallow beach.

This is an open, weather-exposed beach rather than a managed promenade mark, and the main hazards are tide, surf, soft ground and unstable coastal edges. Treat conditions with caution, especially after dark or following erosion-producing weather.

• Never fish beneath, climb on or stand close to eroding cliffs or steep earth banks; the Holderness coast is actively eroding and falls can occur without warning.
• Keep a clear retreat route and move back early on a flooding tide. Do not allow tackle, bags or a vehicle position to trap you below the tide line.
• Wear suitable waterproof footwear with good grip; soft sand, mud-like patches, slippery weed and hidden holes can make walking difficult.
• A headtorch, charged phone, warm layers, first-aid basics and a means of calling for help are sensible for evening or winter sessions.
• Fish with a companion where possible, particularly in surf or darkness, and avoid wading in an exposed sea.
• The variable walk over sand and lack of fixed hardstanding mean the mark is unlikely to be straightforward for anglers with significant mobility needs. Assess the current access route in daylight before planning an assisted visit.

Facilities directly on the sands are limited, which is part of the mark's appeal but also means anglers need to be self-sufficient. Obtain bait, food, fuel and any essential supplies before arriving rather than relying on services at the beach.

• There may be no dependable toilets, shelter, lighting, fresh water or tackle facilities at the immediate access point.
• Nearby coastal towns and villages offer more services, but opening times and seasonal provision vary.
• Take a bin bag for all litter, discarded line, bait packaging and food waste; do not leave bait scraps where they can attract animals.
• A sturdy tripod or sand spike is useful because there is no natural platform for holding a rod above surf and windblown sand.
• Check parking terms on arrival, including any payment requirement, time restriction or overnight prohibition.

The key local skill at Auburn Sands is finding fish-holding water on the day, not simply choosing a famous peg. Walk and watch before setting up, particularly around low water, and be willing to relocate when the sea or tide reveals a better feature.

• Look for darker water, converging wave lines, smoother lanes between breaking waves and drains cutting across the beach; these often indicate deeper channels or moving water.
• Do not overlook close-range fishing. In coloured surf, fish may feed surprisingly near the edge, especially along a defined trough.
• If the beach is covered in weed after a blow, use streamlined baits and rigs, cast only as far as needed, and retrieve/check regularly rather than leaving gear unattended.
• Match the amount of lead and casting distance to the conditions. Holding bottom and presenting bait properly is more important than extreme range.
• Keep noise and light to a minimum at night, both for other anglers and for your own safety and awareness of the sea.

There is no clear general indication that recreational sea fishing is universally prohibited along Auburn Sands, but access, parking and any local restrictions must be checked at the point of entry. Rules can differ between beach access land, adjacent private land, seasonal management areas and conservation designations.
