Bridlington North Pier

Bridlington North Pier is a sheltered-to-open harbour-arm mark at the north side of Bridlington Harbour, capable of producing straightforward mixed sea fishing without the long walk associated with many open-coast venues.

• It is particularly useful for summer float and lure fishing, while bait anglers can pick up whiting, codling and other inshore species as the water cools.
• It is not a wild, isolated rock mark: harbour traffic, pedestrians, changing harbour rules and exposed weather at the seaward end all need to be considered.

The pier runs out from the north side of Bridlington Harbour, close to the town-centre seafront and marina/harbour area. Access is normally level and straightforward along the promenade and pier approach, but the usable fishing space can be limited by walkers, sightseers and harbour activity.

• The more sheltered inner length fishes differently from the outer, more tide-swept end; do not obstruct access routes, ladders, working areas or navigation.
• Parking, public transport and shops are close by in Bridlington, though parking arrangements and restrictions vary by season and location.
• Check the condition of the pier and any access gates before carrying substantial tackle, as temporary closures can occur after severe weather or during maintenance.

North Pier offers a realistic chance of typical Yorkshire inshore and harbour species rather than a guaranteed specimen-fish venue. What is present changes markedly with season, water clarity, baitfish and the state of the sea.

• Spring and summer prospects include mackerel, garfish, pollack, coalfish, wrasse around suitable structure, and occasional bass.
• Flounder, dab, plaice and other flatfish can show in the harbour-influenced ground, particularly where there is cleaner sand or mixed sediment.
• Autumn and winter bait fishing may produce whiting, pouting, codling and the occasional better cod when coloured water and a workable sea reach the pier.
• Small rays or other visiting species are possible in favourable conditions, but should be treated as bonuses rather than targets to rely upon.

A light, adaptable approach is generally more productive than trying to cast extreme distances. Match the method to whether you are fishing the sheltered harbour-side water, the pier wall or the more exposed seaward side.

• For bottom fishing, use a simple two-hook flapper, pulley-style rig where appropriate, or a short clipped rig with enough lead to hold without creating a hazard to other users.
• Ragworm, lugworm, squid, mackerel strip, mussel and peeler crab are useful baits; worm-and-crab combinations are sensible for codling or bass prospects in coloured water.
• A light spinning rod with small metals, sandeels or soft plastics is effective for mackerel, pollack and occasional bass when baitfish are showing.
• A float-fished strip of mackerel, prawn imitation or small bait can be excellent in calmer summer water for mackerel and garfish.
• Keep rigs compact near structures, use abrasion-resistant hooklengths where needed, and carry a drop net or other safe landing plan if fishing above the water.

The pier can be fishable over much of the tide, but the best window depends on the target and the sea state. Moving water is usually preferable, while the very outer section becomes less comfortable and more hazardous as wind and swell increase.

• High water and the first part of the ebb are often convenient for working the deeper water close to the pier and harbour mouth.
• A modest onshore or north-easterly sea can colour the water and improve winter bait fishing, provided it remains safe and the pier is open.
• Clear, settled summer water favours float fishing, light lures and visual feeding fish; dawn, dusk and overcast periods can be especially worthwhile.
• Avoid judging conditions by the town seafront alone: swell can wrap around the harbour entrance and make the outer pier unexpectedly rough.

This is comparatively accessible hard-standing compared with a beach or cliff mark, but it is still an exposed marine structure rather than a controlled fishing platform. Give priority to official closure notices, weather warnings, harbour operations and the safety of pedestrians.

• Do not fish in rough seas, during overtopping, or where spray makes the surface slippery; waves can sweep gear and people from exposed pier ends.
• Wear non-slip footwear and suitable warm, waterproof clothing, and keep tackle, rod rests and lines clear of the walking route.
• Take particular care with children, dogs, hooks and casting; this is a busy public area and overhead casting is often inappropriate.
• Mobility access may be good along level sections, but railings, kerbs, crowding, wind exposure and the need to land fish from height can still be significant barriers.
• Never block harbour equipment, emergency access, ladders, moorings or any route used by vessels and staff.

Bridlington’s seafront location is a major practical advantage, with shops, food outlets, toilets and other town facilities generally available nearby. The exact availability of toilets, parking and tackle supplies can be seasonal or subject to local operating hours.

• Bring bait, drinking water, a first-aid kit, spare terminal tackle and a bag for all litter; local shops should not be assumed to stock a particular bait on the day.
• A landing net on a rope, long-handled net or drop net may be necessary depending on the fishing position and water level.
• Use designated bins where available, but take discarded line, bait packets and damaged rigs home if bins are full.

Treat North Pier as a mobile, observant mark: look for tide lines, baitfish, gull activity and the boundary between clearer harbour water and more coloured sea water before committing to one method. Fishing a short session around the best tide window is often more productive than leaving static baits out all day.

• In calm summer weather, travel light and have both a float/lure rod and a small bait setup available.
• In colder, coloured conditions, concentrate on fresh bait, tidy presentation and fishing close to likely channels rather than maximum-distance casting.
• Speak courteously with other anglers and leave ample room; popular areas can become crowded, especially in holiday periods.
• If the outer end is busy or restricted, do not force the issue—choose a safe permitted section or move to an alternative local mark.

Fishing is not treated here as universally banned, but harbour and local-authority restrictions can apply to particular sections, operational areas, events and temporary safety closures. The most reliable position on the day is the current signage on site and advice from the harbour authority or East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

• Obey all posted no-fishing, no-casting, closure, exclusion-zone and harbour-safety notices, even if anglers have historically used the area.
• Do not cast across channels, interfere with vessels, fish from signed working areas, or leave unattended tackle where it could endanger harbour users.
• Recreational sea angling in England does not normally require an Environment Agency rod licence, but anglers remain responsible for complying with current national and local fishery rules.
