Sewerby

Sewerby is a rugged, open-coast mark immediately north of Bridlington, best known for its chalk-and-rock foreshore, gullies and rougher ground beneath the cliffs. It can produce excellent winter codling fishing in the right sea, while summer brings a more varied mix of species.

• This is primarily a mobile, natural-ground venue rather than an easy, level promenade mark.
• It suits anglers comfortable fishing rough ground, reading the tide and carrying equipment over uneven access.
• Conditions change markedly with wind direction, swell and the state of the tide, so it is not a mark to treat casually.

The Sewerby coastline lies around the village and Sewerby Hall area, north of Bridlington, with access generally approached from public parking and signed coastal footpaths rather than directly from the road. Exact usable entry points can change because cliff paths, steps and foreshore access are vulnerable to erosion and storm damage.

• Expect a walk from parking, often over sloping grass, paths, steps or uneven shoreline terrain.
• The lower foreshore is a mix of chalk, rock shelves, scars, weed and shingle; it is not uniformly fishable at every state of tide.
• Use only clearly open public routes and obey any temporary closures, warning signs or barriers.
• Do not attempt to climb cliffs, use unofficial cut-downs or walk beneath unstable cliff faces.
• Check the return route before committing to a low-water ledge, as the tide can cover access surprisingly quickly.

Sewerby has a classic Yorkshire rough-ground species list, with the main target changing through the year and according to sea state. Winter fishing is most associated with codling, whereas warmer months can offer mixed fishing over the cleaner edges and around the rock.

• Codling and occasional larger cod are the principal cold-water targets, especially after autumn and winter northerly or north-easterly seas.
• Whiting, pouting, poor cod, dab and flounder may feature in calmer periods or over less rugged patches.
• Coalfish can occur around rougher ground and deeper water, particularly when the sea has colour.
• Summer possibilities include mackerel, garfish, bass, wrasse and dogfish, with species availability varying greatly year to year.
• Rockling, scorpionfish and small pollack may be present around kelp, crevices and broken ground.
• Treat all fish responsibly: release unwanted catches carefully and avoid taking immature fish.

Fishing at Sewerby is usually about presenting a durable bait close to gullies, broken ground and the edge of rougher water without donating excessive tackle to the snags. Match the rig to the terrain rather than automatically using the heaviest tackle available.

• For codling, a clipped-down pulley, pulley-dropper or other rotten-bottom-style rig can be useful where snag risk is high.
• Strong hook patterns, abrasion-resistant snoods and appropriately robust main line help when fishing kelp, chalk scars and boulder-strewn ground.
• Lugworm, ragworm, peeler crab, mussel, squid and cocktail baits are all worth carrying; crab and worm baits are often especially effective for codling and bass.
• Keep casts purposeful rather than blindly chasing distance: fish frequently feed close to gullies, rough-water seams and the near edge of the flood.
• In settled summer weather, light spinning, float-fishing or simple bait rigs can be productive for mackerel, garfish and wrasse where safe casting positions exist.
• Carry spare leads, traces and hooks, but use tackle that minimises lost end gear rather than repeatedly dragging fixed rigs through kelp.

The mark is generally most practical around a flooding tide and high water, when fish can move over the rough ground and the angler is less exposed on distant rock shelves. A moderate coloured sea is often favourable for codling, but heavy swell can make the venue dangerous and unfishable.

• Fish the building flood where a safe platform remains available, then reassess the escape route well before high water.
• Low water can expose useful gullies and reveal the ground, but it can also leave anglers isolated beyond rising-water channels.
• Autumn and winter north-easterly weather can put colour into the water and improve codling prospects after the sea has begun to settle.
• In calm, clear water, scale down expectations for daytime codling but consider evening, dawn or night sessions for better confidence.
• Avoid the coast in strong onshore winds, large surf, sea fog or when waves are washing across the chosen ledge.
• Check a current local tide prediction and marine forecast on the day; do not rely on a generic tide rule.

Sewerby is not an easy-access sea-fishing venue. The combination of unstable cliffs, slippery weed-covered chalk, changing tides and exposed North Sea weather demands conservative decisions.

• Wear a proper flotation device or buoyancy aid near the water, together with grippy boots and weatherproof clothing.
• Never fish directly under the cliffs: falling chalk, rock and soil are a real hazard, particularly after rain, frost or storms.
• Fish with a companion where possible, tell someone your plan, and carry a fully charged phone in a waterproof pouch.
• Use a headtorch after dark, but arrive in daylight first so that you can identify safe ground and an exit route.
• Retreat early if waves begin reaching the platform, the route is being cut off, or spray makes the rocks slippery.
• Wheelchair access and level-platform access should not be assumed; the foreshore approach is generally unsuitable for anglers with limited mobility.

Facilities are mainly found inland around Sewerby village and the Sewerby Hall area rather than on the fishing ground itself. The shoreline should be treated as self-sufficient and remote once you leave the parking and visitor areas.

• Public parking may be available nearby, but availability, charges, opening arrangements and overnight restrictions should be checked locally before travel.
• Toilets, refreshments and shops may be available in the village or nearby Bridlington depending on season and opening hours.
• Take sufficient water, food, spare clothing, lighting and a first-aid kit to the shore.
• There are no facilities on the rocks for tackle disposal, shelter or emergency refuge.
• Take all litter, discarded line, bait packaging and damaged tackle home with you.

Success at Sewerby usually comes from choosing a safe, fishable section of ground for the prevailing conditions rather than trying to force a session in unsuitable weather. A daylight reconnaissance at low or mid tide is valuable for learning the scars, gullies and safe retreat lines.

• Speak to local tackle shops for current reports on codling movement, weed, coloured water and any access issues.
• Fish fresh bait where possible, especially when targeting codling in a coloured sea.
• Do not overcast good close-in water; a bait placed beside a gully or broken-water line can outfish a long cast.
• Give other anglers room, especially on limited safe ledges, and avoid casting across established lines.
• If the surf is too powerful to hold bottom safely or you cannot identify a secure route off the shore, choose a more sheltered mark.
• Plan for the walk back in the dark, including spare torch batteries and a dry layer for after the session.

There is no clear basis to describe all of Sewerby as permanently closed to recreational sea angling, but access and fishing can be restricted temporarily or locally. Anglers remain responsible for checking the current rules before fishing.

• Follow all on-site signs, land-management notices, parking conditions and temporary cliff-path or beach closures.
• Observe national fisheries rules, including any current minimum-size, catch-limit, seasonal or protected-species requirements; these can change, so verify them through official fisheries sources before keeping fish.
• Check the relevant local Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority guidance for any local byelaws affecting shore collection, shellfish, bait digging or protected areas.
• Do not remove bait, shellfish, rocks or other material where notices prohibit it, and avoid disturbing wildlife.
• Respect private land and use only legitimate public access; uncertainty over a route is a reason to find an alternative entry point, not to bypass barriers.
• If official signage states that fishing is prohibited in a particular area, that instruction takes precedence.
