Danes Dyke

Danes Dyke is a rugged, scenic shore mark on the Flamborough peninsula, where a wooded valley and the historic earthwork of the same name run down towards the sea. It is best regarded as a mixed rough-ground and beach fishing venue rather than an easy, open sand beach, with its main appeal being winter codling prospects and varied summer rock-fishing.

The mark lies at the seaward end of Danes Dyke, near Flamborough in East Riding of Yorkshire, with access generally made from the inland side via public paths through the nature-reserve/woodland area. The final approach can be long, uneven and muddy after rain, so it is not a venue for carrying excessive tackle.

Danes Dyke can produce a useful East Yorkshire mixed bag, especially when sea conditions put colour into the water. The better species are generally associated with the rougher ground, gullies and the more mobile water around high tide.

A simple but robust beach/rough-ground approach works best, with tackle selected according to whether you are fishing a clear patch of ground or casting directly into kelp and broken rock. Carry enough terminal tackle to replace losses: this is not a snag-free venue.

The mark is usually more productive when the tide covers the rough ground and creates enough movement for fish to feed close in. Conditions matter more than chasing a precise tide table rule: a safe, fishable sea with some colour is generally far more useful than a flat, crystal-clear calm.

Danes Dyke is an exposed natural shoreline, not a managed promenade mark, and the walk and foreshore require sensible footwear, tide awareness and a realistic assessment of weather. It is unsuitable for anglers with limited mobility and should not be treated as an easy family fishing beach in poor conditions.

Parking and basic visitor provision may be available around the inland reserve access, but anglers should not rely on shore-side facilities. Treat the session as self-sufficient and check current parking arrangements before travelling.

Travelling light, arriving in daylight and using the first visit to identify safe routes, clear casting lanes and likely snags will make Danes Dyke far more enjoyable. The venue can reward patience, but it is not the place to force long casts or fish ground that has not been properly assessed.

There is no clear basis to describe sea fishing at Danes Dyke as universally prohibited, but the access runs alongside or through a sensitive nature-reserve setting and local restrictions can change. Check current East Riding Council notices, access signage and any site-specific byelaws before fishing, parking, collecting bait or using fires/barbecues.

• Sea angling in England does not normally require a rod licence, but this does not remove the need to follow fisheries rules.
• Observe current minimum landing sizes, catch limits and seasonal or area restrictions for species you intend to retain; bass rules in particular can change and should be checked from official sources before a trip.
• Return protected, prohibited or unwanted fish carefully, and do not remove wildlife, birds' eggs, plants or material from the reserve.
• Keep clear of cliff edges, fenced land and signed conservation areas, and use only legitimate public access routes.
• Take all litter, discarded line and bait packaging home; lost line is especially hazardous around seabirds and shore wildlife.
