Thornwick Bay

Thornwick Bay is a dramatic, rock-ledged sea-fishing mark on the north side of Flamborough Head, close to Flamborough village. It is chiefly a rough-ground venue, valued for summer rock species and mackerel, with a worthwhile chance of codling and larger fish when autumn and winter seas put colour into the water.

• Expect chalk and rock shelves, gullies, kelp and snaggy ground rather than easy, clean beach fishing.
• It is best regarded as a mobile, hands-on rock mark: finding a fishable gully or clear edge often matters more than casting extreme distance.
• The bay is very scenic but exposed to North Sea weather; it can change from manageable to dangerous quickly.

The mark lies at Thornwick Bay near Flamborough, East Riding of Yorkshire, with approaches generally made from the bay, nearby public paths and the surrounding holiday-park area. Access arrangements, parking availability and permitted routes can change, particularly around private holiday-park land, so use signed public access and do not assume every track or path is open to anglers.

• Parking is usually available in the wider Thornwick/Flamborough area, but charges, opening times and restrictions should be checked on arrival.
• The final approach can involve uneven paths, steep sections and a scramble over slippery rock; travel light and keep both hands free where possible.
• The most productive water is commonly reached from rock platforms and gully mouths rather than from the small beach alone.
• Avoid cutting across fenced land, caravan pitches, private roads or signed restricted areas.

Thornwick Bay produces the usual Flamborough Head rough-ground mix, with the exact species and size strongly influenced by season, sea state and the particular gully being fished. Summer is especially enjoyable for active, light-tackle fishing, while colder, coloured-water periods offer the better prospect of cod-family fish.

• Mackerel can show in summer and early autumn, particularly when baitfish are moving close to the headland.
• Pollack are a principal sport species around kelp, broken rock and deeper gullies.
• Ballan wrasse and smaller corkwing wrasse are common targets over the rough ground in settled, warmer conditions.
• Codling and occasional better cod are possible from autumn into winter, especially after a suitable northerly or north-easterly sea has stirred the bottom.
• Coalfish, pouting, poor cod, rockling and other small gadoids may feature, particularly after dark.
• Bass can occur in the bay and along nearby rough shoreline in the warmer months, though they are never a certainty.
• Dogfish and the occasional thornback ray may be possible on more suitable patches of ground, mainly in low light or darkness.

Tackle needs to match the terrain: Thornwick Bay rewards sensible presentation, but the rocks and kelp will quickly expose under-gunned gear. Carry a range of rigs and be prepared to alter position if weed, swell or snags make a chosen ledge unfishable.

• For codling and mixed rough-ground fishing, use a robust beachcaster or rock rod, a strong reel line, a rotten-bottom or weak-link sinker arrangement, and a simple pulley or pennel-style bait rig.
• Crab, squid, mussel, lugworm, ragworm and fish baits can all take fish; tougher, well-bound baits generally withstand the crabs and rough ground best.
• Keep casts purposeful rather than blindly long: a clear edge beyond kelp, the mouth of a gully or a seam of moving water can be enough.
• For pollack, work soft plastics, jelly worms, metal lures or small plugs slowly along the sides of kelp and rock, while maintaining direct contact with the lure.
• Float-fished worm, small crab baits or light lures can be effective for wrasse in calm, clear summer conditions.
• Use a landing net only where a safe ledge permits it; on higher or rougher platforms, a suitable drop net or careful relocation may be safer than trying to lift fish.

Thornwick is not a mark where a single tide rule suits every platform, because depth, kelp exposure and swell vary around the bay. A moderate sea with some colour is often preferable for bait fishing, whereas light-tackle sport is usually best in calm, clear conditions.

• Mid tide through high water often gives more water beneath the rocks and can make many ledges more productive and practical.
• Lower stages can expose useful features and allow reconnaissance, but they may also leave shallow kelp and awkward exits; do not become cut off by the flood.
• A small to moderate swell can improve codling prospects, but a heavy or rising swell makes the platforms unsafe and should be treated as a reason not to fish.
• North and north-easterly weather can build sea quickly on this coast; check the marine forecast, wave conditions and local observations before committing.
• Dawn, dusk and darkness can improve codling, dogfish and larger pollack chances, but night fishing greatly increases the hazard of this terrain.
• In calm summer weather, early morning or evening can be better for mackerel, pollack, wrasse and bass than bright, busy daytime periods.

This is a potentially hazardous cliff-and-rock mark rather than an easy-access promenade venue. Slippery chalk, weed, surge, steep ground and difficult recovery from the shoreline mean anglers should be conservative about both weather and position.

• Do not fish platforms that can be reached by spray, wave wash or surge; if waves can wet the ledge, move back or leave.
• Wear grippy footwear, suitable warm and waterproof clothing, and a flotation device where conditions warrant it; studded or felt-soled footwear can help on wet rock but does not make dangerous ground safe.
• Tell someone where you are going, carry a charged phone in a waterproof case, and avoid fishing alone in poor weather or after dark.
• Check the route out before the tide rises, keep clear of cliff edges and never shelter directly beneath unstable cliffs or overhangs.
• The uneven approach, gradients and rocky platforms make the main fishing areas unsuitable for wheelchair users and difficult for anyone with limited mobility.
• If conditions deteriorate, leave early rather than waiting for the tide or swell to force the decision.

Facilities are primarily found around the Thornwick holiday-park and Flamborough area rather than on the fishing rocks themselves. Treat any facilities within a holiday park as privately managed unless they are clearly signed for public use.

• Parking, toilets, food and shops may be available nearby depending on season and local operating arrangements.
• There are no dependable angler-specific facilities, sheltered fishing stages or easy landing points at the shoreline.
• Take drinking water, a headtorch for late sessions, spare batteries, a basic first-aid kit and a bag for all litter and discarded line.
• Mobile signal can be variable around cliffs and low ground, so do not rely on it as your only safety plan.

A first daylight visit at a safe low-to-mid tide is useful for learning the layout before attempting a serious session. Thornwick tends to fish best when an angler selects a safe, workable piece of water and fishes it properly, rather than constantly clambering in search of a supposedly perfect ledge.

• Watch the sea for several minutes before setting up, looking for surge lines, weed movement, gullies and the highest reach of occasional larger waves.
• Bring spare leads, hooks and rigs: tackle losses are normal on this sort of ground.
• Fish tough baits securely and check them regularly, as crabs and small fish can strip a bait quickly.
• For lure fishing, start with a controlled retrieve and keep the lure above the worst kelp; repeatedly dragging it through the bottom is an efficient way to lose gear.
• Be considerate of walkers, wildlife watchers and other anglers, particularly on narrow access paths in the busy holiday season.
• Leave no line, bait packaging or hooks behind; the bay's wildlife and visiting dogs are especially vulnerable to discarded tackle.

There is no clear basis to state that sea angling is universally prohibited at Thornwick Bay, but access and activity can be restricted locally by landowners, safety closures, conservation management or temporary signage. Anglers should verify the current position on the day and comply with all national fisheries rules.

• Observe all on-site signs, including any directions concerning private holiday-park land, cliff safety, path closures, nesting birds or protected areas.
• Do not disturb nesting seabirds, seals or other wildlife, and give colonies and cliff-edge habitat a wide berth.
• Follow current rules for minimum sizes, catch limits, protected species, bass measures and any other sea-fisheries requirements; check official UK fisheries guidance because these rules can change.
• Permission may be needed if using parking or crossing privately controlled land, even where the shore itself appears accessible.
• If a notice, warden or land manager says a particular access route or area is closed, use an alternative legal route or choose another mark.
