The Breil

The Breil is a rugged, tide-sensitive rock mark on the Flamborough Headland section of the East Riding coast, valued by experienced anglers for deep, broken ground and genuine rough-weather potential. It is not a casual “cast from the promenade” venue: success and safety both depend on choosing the right sea state, tide and route.

• The mark is chiefly associated with rock fishing for cod, pollack, wrasse and mixed ground species.
• It can fish very differently from one tide or wind direction to the next, with coloured water often improving its codling prospects.
• It is best approached as an experienced angler’s venue, particularly in autumn and winter.

The Breil lies on the Flamborough Headland coastline in East Riding of Yorkshire, among steep cliffs, rocky scars and uneven foreshore. Access is normally on foot from the headland paths and involves negotiating rough, potentially slippery terrain; the precise route should be assessed on the day rather than assumed to be safe.

• Use established public paths, gates and access points, and do not take shortcuts across unstable cliff edges or private land.
• The final approach can involve steep slopes, loose rock, weed-covered scars and sections that are cut off by the tide.
• A daylight reconnaissance at low water is strongly advisable before attempting an evening, night or rough-weather session.
• Parking and path arrangements can change, so check local notices before travelling.

The Breil’s rocky ground supports a useful range of North Sea species, with the better fish often appearing when conditions put food and colour into the water. Expectations should be seasonal and weather-led rather than based on a guaranteed species list.

• Codling and cod are the principal cold-water targets, especially in autumn and winter after a suitable sea.
• Pollack can be present around kelp, gullies and deeper rock edges in clearer water, particularly through the warmer months.
• Ballan wrasse, corkwing wrasse and smaller mixed rock species provide summer sport close to the rough ground.
• Mackerel may show in settled summer conditions where there is sufficient depth and clear water.
• Coalfish, pouting, rockling, dogfish and occasional bass are possible, although their presence varies greatly with season and conditions.

Tackle needs to match rough seabed, strong tidal movement and the possibility of fish taking baits close to kelp and rock. Lost gear is part of fishing this type of venue, but careful presentation and sensible tackle choices can limit it.

• For cod fishing, use a robust beachcaster or rough-ground rod with a reel carrying adequate line for powerful casts and abrasion-prone terrain.
• Pennel or pulley-style bait rigs are commonly useful where a fish must be lifted clear of kelp and snags; keep hook patterns strong and appropriate to the bait.
• Fresh or well-presented crab, mussel, lugworm, ragworm, squid and fish baits can all have a place, with crab and shellfish-style offerings often worthwhile around rocky ground.
• Fish baits into identifiable gullies, clear patches and the edges of kelp rather than casting blindly into the roughest visible snag field.
• For pollack, a medium-to-heavy spinning outfit with metal lures, soft plastics or diving plugs can be effective, but retrieve carefully and expect snagging near kelp.
• Keep casts controlled: there is little value in extreme distance if the bait lands in inaccessible foul ground or outside a safe landing area.

The Breil is generally most attractive when the sea has enough movement to stir food from the rock and colour the water, but not so much that the ledges become unsafe or unfishable. Tide timing matters as much as weather because rock access can disappear surprisingly quickly.

• A moderate to lively sea can improve codling chances, especially following onshore weather that has coloured the water.
• Clear, settled water is often better suited to pollack, wrasse and lure fishing, provided the swell is low enough for safe footing.
• Fishable windows may occur around high water or on a flooding tide, but the usable state of the mark depends on the particular ledge, swell and route.
• Avoid committing to low rock platforms if a rising tide, surge or increasing swell could cut off your exit.
• Strong onshore winds and large swell can make the shoreline dangerous even if the forecast suggests only moderate wind strength inland.
• Check a reliable marine forecast, tide information and the observed sea state immediately before descending.

This is a demanding natural rock mark with significant risks from cliffs, swell, slippery weed, uneven ground and tidal isolation. It is unsuitable for wheelchair access and is not a good choice for anglers with limited mobility, inexperienced rock anglers, or anyone fishing alone in difficult conditions.

• Wear a buoyancy aid, grippy footwear or rock boots, warm waterproof clothing and a headtorch if there is any prospect of poor light.
• Take a charged phone in a waterproof case, tell someone your planned return time, and ensure you have a conservative escape route.
• Never turn your back on the sea; occasional larger waves can reach well beyond the apparent wash line.
• Do not fish beneath unstable cliffs, overhangs or areas affected by fresh rockfall.
• Keep well clear of cliff edges, particularly in darkness, fog or strong winds.
• If conditions worsen, leave early rather than waiting for the tide or swell to make the decision for you.
• Landing a sizeable fish can be difficult from uneven rocks, so bring a suitable landing tool only if it can be used safely without putting yourself near the edge.

The Breil is a wild shoreline mark rather than a serviced fishing venue, so anglers should arrive self-sufficient. Facilities are generally found in nearby settlements or at more formal visitor areas, not on the fishing rocks themselves.

• Do not expect toilets, tackle shops, lighting, shelters, freshwater or safe litter disposal at the mark.
• Carry drinking water, food, a basic first-aid kit, spare clothing and a means of taking all litter and discarded line home.
• Pack tackle in a rucksack or secure carrying system; carrying a large box over rough ground is awkward and potentially unsafe.
• Keep vehicles and valuables secure at the chosen parking area, and do not obstruct gateways, tracks or emergency access.

The most productive approach is usually to let the sea state dictate the target species rather than forcing a preferred method on unsuitable conditions. Time spent watching the water, identifying gullies and planning an exit route often pays more than simply making longer casts.

• Visit in daylight first and note where kelp, deep water, safe standing areas and tidal pinch-points lie.
• Travel light enough to move safely, but take spare rigs and leads because the ground can be unforgiving.
• In rougher cod conditions, concentrate on secure bait presentation and regular checks for weed rather than leaving a bait static for too long.
• In calmer summer weather, work lures methodically along kelp edges for pollack and use lighter close-range tactics for wrasse where safe.
• Respect other coastal users, nesting birds and the quiet nature of the headland; avoid blocking paths with rods or tackle.
• Take every scrap of line, bait packaging and litter away, as discarded tackle is particularly harmful around rocky bird habitat.

There is no clear general indication that sea angling at The Breil is universally prohibited, but access and fishing can be affected by local land management, conservation designations, temporary safety measures and site-specific notices. Anglers should treat the absence of a known ban as neither a guarantee of access nor permission to ignore signage.

• Check current official notices, landowner information and signs at the relevant path, car park and shoreline access point before fishing.
• Follow any seasonal restrictions intended to protect nesting seabirds or sensitive cliff and foreshore habitat.
• Do not cross private land, climb fences, disturb wildlife or use closed paths to reach the shore.
• Observe current national and local rules on minimum sizes, catch limits, protected species and shellfish collection; these can change, so consult official sources before retaining fish.
• Return unwanted fish carefully and promptly, and consider releasing larger breeding fish where practical.
• If an official sign prohibits access, fishing or entry because of a cliff, conservation or emergency closure, do not attempt to bypass it.
