Selwicks Bay

Selwicks Bay is a dramatic, compact chalk cove on the Flamborough Headland, best treated as a demanding rough-ground shore mark rather than an easy, open beach venue. It can produce quality fish in the right sea conditions, but safe access and a sensible exit plan matter more here than squeezing out an extra hour’s fishing.

• Expect a mixture of chalk reef, kelp, broken rock and small patches of sand rather than a uniformly clean casting area.
• The mark is most appealing to mobile, experienced anglers who are comfortable fishing rocky Yorkshire coastline and dealing with snags.
• It is a scenic but exposed place: catches can be secondary to timing the weather, swell and tide safely.

Selwicks Bay lies on the Flamborough Head coast, between the lighthouse/headland area and the bays to the south. Access is normally approached from the Flamborough Head/Lighthouse area using the public coastal-path network, but the final descent and foreshore conditions should always be assessed in person.

• Use designated parking and public rights of way only; do not cut across crops, private land, cliff edges or fenced-off ground.
• Paths and informal descents can be steep, slippery and badly eroded, particularly after rain or winter weather.
• Check that there is a safe, practical route both down and back up before carrying heavy fishing gear to the shore.

Fishing should be matched to the bottom rather than forced with long, heavy casts. Robust terminal tackle and disciplined fish retrieval are generally more useful than trying to reach the horizon.

• For codling and mixed winter fish, use a clipped or streamlined one- or two-hook rig with durable baits such as lugworm, ragworm, crab, mussel or squid combinations where appropriate.
• Keep hooklengths sensibly short over the roughest ground and use abrasion-resistant line; losses are part of fishing chalk, kelp and broken rock.
• A pulley-style rig or another fish-lifting arrangement can help when bringing fish clear of snags, but only if it is used safely and within the angler’s casting ability.
• For pollack and mackerel, work metals, soft plastics or small plugs through clearer water with a controlled retrieve; avoid blindly casting into thick kelp or close to other coastal users.
• Wrasse respond well to a lightly presented bait close to structure, though tackle must still be strong enough to turn fish quickly away from cover.
• A landing net with a long handle can be useful only where there is a genuinely safe landing point; never climb onto unstable ledges simply to land a fish.

The bay is highly condition-dependent, and there is no substitute for watching the water before committing to fish it. A manageable sea with some colour can favour the rough-ground species, while a large swell can make the entire foreshore unsafe.

• Fish only within a tide window that leaves a safe, known escape route; do not rely on crossing wet rocks or narrow beach sections after the tide has risen.
• Moderate coloured water after a suitable sea can improve the prospects for codling, whereas clear and settled summer water is more suited to wrasse, pollack and mackerel tactics.

Selwicks Bay is not a casual or universally accessible shore mark. The cliffs, steep approaches, uneven rock and rapidly changing sea state demand conservative decisions.

• It is unsuitable for wheelchair access and is likely to be difficult for anyone with limited mobility, poor balance or an inability to carry equipment over rough ground.
• Wear proper non-slip boots, warm waterproof layers and a buoyancy aid when fishing close to the water; take a headtorch, charged phone and basic first-aid kit.
• Keep well away from the cliff base and do not shelter beneath overhangs: chalk cliffs can shed rock without warning.

Facilities are limited at the bay itself, so anglers should arrive self-sufficient and plan around the amenities available in the wider Flamborough Head area. Do not expect toilets, shelter, running water or tackle supplies on the foreshore.

• Parking and visitor facilities may be available around the lighthouse/headland or in Flamborough village, but availability, charging and seasonal opening arrangements can change.
• Bring drinking water, food, a fully charged phone, spare batteries and a means of carrying all litter home.
• The nearest shops, cafés, public toilets and emergency services are not on the shore; check current local opening information before travelling.
• Keep access points clear for other visitors and do not leave vehicles or equipment where they obstruct gates, paths or emergency access.

Selwicks Bay rewards preparation and restraint more than brute-force casting. A short reconnaissance visit in daylight and at a low or falling tide can be more valuable than arriving late with a full tackle box.

• Travel light enough to make the walk and return safely; a small, well-organised pack is preferable to multiple heavy bags on steep ground.
• Identify sandier channels, kelp edges and safe standing areas before fishing, then make measured casts rather than repeatedly dragging tackle through the roughest bottom.
• Save the mark for a sea state that suits your target species: coloured, moving water for winter bait fishing; clearer, calmer water for lure and wrasse fishing.
• Keep noise, lights and disturbance to a minimum, particularly around nesting-season cliffs and seabird areas.
• Take every scrap of line, bait packaging and litter away. Discarded line is especially harmful around cliff and seabird habitat.

There is no confirmed blanket prohibition on sea angling at Selwicks Bay in this description, but access and conservation restrictions can be location- or season-specific.
