Thornwick Nab

Thornwick Nab is a rugged, rough-ground shore mark on the north side of Flamborough Head, close to Thornwick Bay. It can produce excellent rock-fishing sport, particularly when the sea has some colour, but it is an exposed and potentially hazardous place rather than an easy, all-tide beach venue.

• The mark is best regarded as a mobile, conditions-led rock mark: available ledges, gullies and casting positions vary with tide, swell and recent rockfall.
• It is chiefly known for rough-ground fishing, with snaggy kelp, broken chalk/rock and deeper water within casting range in the right areas.
• It suits experienced sea anglers who are comfortable judging a safe route, fishing awkward ground and leaving before the tide or sea state closes access.

• Wear a properly fitting flotation device, sturdy boots with reliable grip, warm waterproof clothing and carry a charged phone in a waterproof case.
• Tell someone your exact plan and return time, fish with a companion where possible, and keep a headtorch and basic first-aid kit available.
• Stay well back from cliff edges and do not fish beneath unstable cliffs or overhangs. Chalk and rock can fall without warning.
• Never turn your back on the sea, cross wet weed-covered rock unnecessarily, or attempt a rescue of tackle, fish or another person's gear from the waterline.
• Leave early rather than trying to outrun a rising tide, worsening swell or darkness. Emergency access from low rocks can be difficult.
• The terrain, descent and uneven fishing platforms make this mark unsuitable for wheelchair access and difficult for anglers with limited mobility.

Facilities are centred on the wider Thornwick and Flamborough area rather than on the Nab itself. Treat the fishing position as remote: there are no dependable amenities, shelter or safe tackle storage on the rocks.

The most successful approach is to arrive early, watch the sea for a while and choose only a position that has a clear, safe retreat. At a mark as rough and exposed as Thornwick Nab, being prepared to walk away is a useful fishing skill.

• Fish the edges of kelp and broken ground rather than automatically casting as far as possible. Productive water may be close in, but only if it can be fished and retrieved safely.
